SpaceX launched the classified USSF-481 mission for the U.S. Space Force from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Oct. 15, 2026. A Falcon 9 lifted off at 8:01 p.m. EDT (0001 GMT on Oct. 16), and its reusable first stage landed about 8.5 minutes later on the autonomous drone ship Of Course I Still Love You. The mission’s payload, destination, orbit and objective have not been publicly disclosed.
What happened on the USSF-481 launch
The launch carried a national-security payload for the U.S. Space Force. Falcon 9 departed Vandenberg Space Force Base at 8:01 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Oct. 15, which was 0001 GMT on Oct. 16. After ascent, the first stage separated and performed a powered landing on SpaceX’s autonomous Pacific Ocean drone ship, Of Course I Still Love You, approximately 8.5 minutes after liftoff.

SpaceX’s webcast showed the rocket’s departure and recovery sequence but ended shortly after the booster landing. That cutoff is normal for a classified mission: public coverage can document the launch vehicle and recovery without revealing information about the spacecraft or its flight path.

What is known—and not known—about the payload
USSF-481’s customer is identified as the U.S. Space Force, but the spacecraft or spacecraft carried by Falcon 9 has not been publicly identified. No public information establishes the payload’s destination, orbit, mission purpose or deployment timing.
#1 Best Overall
- Extremely exquisite SpaceX starship rocket model (For collection or display, not a toy! Children should not buy it)
- This model is a highly simulated SpaceX starship rocket model. The main body of the first-level super heavy booster is made of precision aluminum alloy tubes. The second-level starship is embedded with reinforced aluminum alloy tubes. The rest of the rocket materials are made of high-quality imported resin. Excellent laser forming ability and long-lasting storage
- The proportional model:1:375
- Actual height: 32cm (the core diameter is 24mm, the real rocket is 9 meters in diameter) This ratio is the best choice for desktop placement
- Note: This model is not a toy model, it is not recommended to buy for children, please buy with caution to avoid unnecessary trouble for your shopping
- Publicly identified: the U.S. Space Force as customer, Falcon 9 as the launch vehicle, Vandenberg as the launch site and booster 1081 as the first stage.
- Not publicly disclosed: payload identity, destination, target orbit, mission objective and deployment footage.
Because the mission is classified, the absence of deployment video is not evidence that deployment failed. It reflects the information boundary set for the flight.

The Falcon 9 booster’s reuse record
Booster 1081 completed its 28th Falcon 9 flight on USSF-481. Sixteen of its previous 27 missions launched Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit, while the Space Force flight added another national-security mission to its record. The reuse count describes completed flights by the same first-stage vehicle; it does not identify the classified spacecraft on the latest launch.

USSF-481 was reported as Falcon 9’s 114th mission of 2026. More than 70% of Falcon 9 flights that year had served SpaceX’s Starlink broadband constellation, making a classified Space Force launch a smaller but strategically distinct portion of the company’s manifest.

The public SpaceX webcast covers the visible portions of the mission: liftoff, ascent and first-stage recovery. For USSF-481, the stream ended shortly after the drone-ship landing, so viewers should not expect a public payload-deployment sequence or spacecraft images. Space.com’s current report, updated Oct. 16, 2026, is titled around the launch and video and provides the immediate news context.

Do not confuse this footage with a separate Reuters-hosted video of USSF-153, another classified Space Force launch from Vandenberg on Sept. 10, 2026. USSF-153 and USSF-481 are different missions with different designations and launch dates.

A classified launch still requires public safety information, including the launch vehicle, launch site and confirmation of major flight events. Sensitive details can be withheld through a planned webcast cutoff, restricted camera views and the omission of trajectory, payload and orbit data. The result is a broadcast that can verify a successful liftoff and booster recovery while leaving the mission’s strategic purpose unknown.

- A COMPLETE LAUNCH-PAD SCENE: This starship model adds a tower, capture arms and storage-tank details around the rocket for a more immersive desktop display.
- MIST AND RED LIGHT IGNITION EFFECT: The built-in humidifier and LEDs work together beneath the rocket to simulate a dramatic launch plume without heat or propulsion.
- SIMPLE RESERVOIR CARE: The integrated water system is straightforward to operate; refill as needed and wipe the atomizing plate regularly to limit mineral buildup.
- HIGH-DETAIL 3D-PRINTED STRUCTURE: Contrasting silver, black and white components make the launch system easy to examine from multiple angles in offices, classrooms and exhibits.
- A DISPLAY GIFT FOR SPACE ENTHUSIASTS: Suited to adult collectors, engineers and students; place on a stable surface and handle the fine tower and arm details carefully.
For USSF-481, the confirmed public outcome is therefore limited but clear: Falcon 9 launched from Vandenberg, booster 1081 landed on Of Course I Still Love You, and no public source has identified what the rocket carried or where it was sent.
