In August 2024, Doritos announced a space-themed snack promotion tied to Polaris Dawn: minis called COOL RANCH Zero Gravity flavored tortilla chips. What were the “space Doritos”?
Doritos and PepsiCo publicized a space-themed mini product called COOL RANCH Zero Gravity flavored tortilla chips. Futurism referred to them as Cool Ranch Gravity Doritos. The promotional product was associated with Polaris Dawn, a private mission aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon; it should not be confused with ordinary retail Cool Ranch Doritos. The available announcements do not establish whether the space-branded minis were sold to consumers.

Why coat tortilla chips in oil?
Futurism reported that the chips were coated in oil as a way to address tortilla-chip “dust” in space. That is the explanation in the report, not an independently established engineering assessment. The sources do not provide measurements of crumbs or debris, or technical test results for the coating.

What did Polaris Dawn have to do with the promotion?
The Doritos activation was linked to Polaris Dawn, a private Crew Dragon mission whose crew planned a private spacewalk. On Aug. 20, 2024, Futurism described the crew tasting the chips in future tense and said the mission was tentatively scheduled to launch on Aug. 26. Those were prelaunch statements, not confirmation of a later flight outcome. Futurism’s Aug. 20, 2024 report covered the snack promotion; its July 29, 2024 mission report discussed the planned spacewalk and schedule changes.
What was the charitable component?
Futurism reported that $500,000 of sponsorship money would go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The cited reporting does not establish that the donation was completed, so the figure is best understood as a reported pledge rather than a confirmed transfer.

How PepsiCo described the stunt
In a company statement reproduced by Futurism, PepsiCo Foods North America chief creative officer Chris Bellinger said: “The limitless possibilities of space inspired us to push the boundaries of what’s possible. This mission is a testament to our commitment to delivering bold experiences and flavors, even in the most unexpected places.” The remarks are promotional language, not evidence of a technical benefit from the product.
