You can build a spaced repetition flashcard app on Azure, but $5 a month is a budget target—not a verified all-in price. Your actual bill depends on the region, hosting tier, instance count, database and other resources. Start by deciding whether your app can run entirely in the browser or needs server-side code, then price that exact setup with the Azure Pricing Calculator.
Decide what the app needs before choosing Azure hosting
A flashcard app can be as simple as a browser-based tool that stores cards and review history on one device. It becomes a different hosting problem when people need accounts, cross-device synchronization, server-side endpoints, or scheduled background work. Choose the smallest architecture that meets the actual requirements.

- Personal prototype: A client-rendered interface may be enough if users do not need shared accounts or centralized review history.
- Synced app: If users expect their cards and progress to follow them across devices, plan for identity and persistent server-side data.
- Server-side features: APIs or background tasks point toward a server-hosted application or a static front end paired with managed APIs.
The framework, authentication model, sync behavior, and retention needs are product decisions; Azure’s hosting documentation does not determine them.
Choose between Static Web Apps and App Service
| Option | Best fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Azure Static Web Apps | Client-rendered web apps where server-side rendering is not required | Repository-driven deployment; managed API support is available through Azure Functions. The Free plan has no SLA. |
| Azure App Service | Server-hosted web apps, APIs, full-stack apps, or apps with background tasks | Every app runs in an App Service plan, which sets its region, operating system, compute size, instance count, and pricing tier. |
When a static front end is enough
Azure Static Web Apps is designed for client-rendered applications. Microsoft describes it as commonly serving projects built with Angular, React, Svelte, Vue, or Blazor when server-side rendering is not needed. Deployment is driven by a code repository, and managed API support through Azure Functions can add server-side endpoints without making the front end a traditional server-hosted app.

The Free plan is a reasonable starting point for a personal project, but Microsoft states that it has no SLA. That matters if users depend on the app being available: a low-cost tier and a production reliability commitment are not the same thing. Check the current Static Web Apps hosting plans against your needs before choosing.
When App Service fits better
Azure App Service provides managed hosting for web applications. Each app belongs to an App Service plan; that plan determines the region, operating system, VM size, number of instances, and pricing tier. This route is relevant when the app needs a server-hosted runtime, APIs, or background tasks.

- Bulk Value Pack & Organization Efficiency: Get 6 packs of 50 sheets each (300 total) colored ruled index cards. Thick paper resists bleeding and curling, ideal for highlighters, pens, and markers
- High-Density Paper Cardstock: Ensures smudge-proof writing. Acid-free 160gsm paper prevents ink bleed-through while providing satisfying tactile feedback. Perfect for fountain pens, gel pens & markers
- Multi-Purpose Flash Cards: Adaptable for study aids, quick jotting, or visual organization. These 3x5 index cards simplify information retention across work, education, and personal projects
- Smooth Writing Surface: With subtle guidelines silky-coated surface enables effortless pen gliding. Perfect for students, bullet journalists & meeting note-takers
- Effortless Organization: Optimized for creating flashcards, study notes, project planning, etc. Our index cards help categorize subjects or business projects with intuitive visual system
For App Service, selecting the application code alone does not settle the cost. The plan and its instance count are part of the configuration, and connected services may add to the bill.

If cards and review history must be available on multiple devices, decide how the app will identify users and store their data centrally. If it is a single-device personal tool, a central database may not be necessary. Do not add a database simply because a hosting tutorial uses one.

- Ideal Size: The 3x5 inch size index card is perfect for quick jotting, to-do lists, flashcards
Microsoft documents an ASP.NET application connected to Azure SQL Database, including database configuration and managed identity, in its Azure SQL tutorial. That demonstrates one supported pattern—not a finding that Azure SQL is the cheapest or best database for every small flashcard app. Choose storage after deciding what must persist, who can access it, and how synchronization should work.
Estimate the bill instead of promising $5 a month
The available guidance does not establish a $5 all-in monthly price for this particular app. An App Service price is only one possible part of the total; the region, tier, number of instances, database or storage, network use, and supporting resources all affect the estimate. Microsoft advises estimating costs before deployment and monitoring costs after resources are running. See its App Service cost guidance and pricing calculator documentation.

- Choose the architecture first: Static Web Apps, App Service, or a combination with managed APIs.
- In the Azure Pricing Calculator, select the intended region and the exact hosting plan or tier.
- Enter the expected instance count and usage assumptions rather than treating a starting tier as the whole deployment.
- Add the database, storage, network, and any other resources the app will actually use.
- Review the resulting estimate, then monitor actual costs after deployment because usage and configuration can change.
If the estimate exceeds $5, report that honestly. Approaching the target may require simplifying the design, reducing resources, or accepting the limits of a lower tier; the right trade-off depends on reliability and functionality requirements.

Microsoft labels its basic single-region App Service architecture as a proof-of-concept and learning setup, not a production blueprint. Its documented trade-offs include a single instance and reduced protections. Treat it as a way to understand the building blocks, not as evidence that a public service is ready for production.
Before inviting users to rely on the app, define expectations for availability, backups, authentication, synchronization, and data retention. Microsoft’s App Service Well-Architected guidance recommends free or basic tiers for lower environments; production choices should follow the service’s reliability needs. Microsoft also describes Free and Shared App Service tiers as entry-level options for testing with low or minimal cost, without a financially backed SLA in its cost guidance.
Quick Recap
A practical path from first build to deployment
- Specify the learning workflow. Decide how cards are created, how review history is saved, whether accounts are needed, and whether progress must sync across devices.
- Build the interface and review logic. Pick the front-end framework that fits the project. The hosting choice does not dictate the spaced-repetition algorithm.
- Select a hosting shape. Use Static Web Apps for a client-rendered front end; consider App Service if the app needs a server-hosted runtime or background tasks. Add managed APIs only where server-side behavior is required.
- Add persistence only for defined requirements. If users need synchronized data, select an identity and storage approach. Azure SQL is a documented option, not a universal requirement.
- Deploy and validate. Confirm the deployed app loads, that card and review data behave as intended, and that any API or database connection works under the chosen identity and configuration.
- Check the estimate and operational needs. Price all deployed resources for the intended region and monitor the running deployment. For production, resolve availability, backup, access, and retention expectations rather than assuming a prototype configuration covers them.
