The U.S. Space Force retired the final two Defense Support Program (DSP) satellites in September 2026, ending a constellation that had provided space-based early warning for more than five decades. That does not mean the United States has retired all space-based missile warning: the newer Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) remains in orbit, while a broader, multilayered successor architecture is still being developed.

What happened to the last DSP satellites?

The final two DSP spacecraft took part in a U.S. Space Command exercise in early September 2026 involving maneuvers across multiple orbits. After the exercise, they were moved to supersynchronous, or graveyard, orbits. The Space Force announced the constellation’s retirement on October 1, 2026, according to Air & Space Forces and the Space Force Combat Forces Command post. They were not reported to have been deorbited or destroyed.

This was the end of the DSP constellation, not the first time an individual DSP satellite had been retired. In March 2023, the Space Force recognized one spacecraft reaching the end of its lifespan; the October 2026 announcement covered the final two satellites and the constellation’s close.

What did DSP satellites detect?

DSP used infrared sensors to detect heat from missile and rocket-booster plumes against Earth’s background. The system helped provide early warning of missile launches, space launches, and nuclear detonations to the United States and its allies. The first DSP satellite launched in 1970, and the constellation eventually grew to 23 satellites; the last one was launched in 2007, according to the Air & Space Forces account and the Space Force DSP fact sheet.

“Watched for World War III” is a dramatic description of a Cold War warning mission, not DSP’s formal name or a claim that satellites could predict a war. Their observations were intended to alert military and government decision-makers to possible launches; the satellites did not prevent an attack or independently identify every threat.

Did the Space Force retire its missile-warning system?

No. DSP’s successor, the Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS), remains part of the U.S. missile-warning architecture. The Space Force describes SBIRS as a follow-on capability that includes satellites in geosynchronous orbit (GEO), hosted sensors in highly elliptical orbit (HEO), legacy DSP assets, and ground systems. Its mission areas include missile early warning, missile defense, battlespace awareness, and technical intelligence, as set out in the Space Force SBIRS fact sheet.

In October 2026, Air & Space Forces reported that SBIRS consisted of six GEO satellites and four HEO sensors. Those figures describe the reported system at that time, not a permanent inventory guarantee.

What is planned to replace or augment SBIRS?

The planned transition is toward a more resilient architecture using multiple orbital layers, rather than a single direct replacement for DSP. Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared (Next-Gen OPIR) GEO satellites are intended to augment SBIRS. The broader plan also includes proliferated Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) capabilities for warning and tracking. These are planned elements, not proof that all layers are currently operating.

The Space Force’s 2026 notional force-structure document shows legacy assets remaining during the 2025–2030 planning period, with discontinuation of legacy GEO/HEO programs planned for 2030–2035. These are planning windows, not fixed launch dates or confirmation that every replacement capability will be fielded on schedule. The document describes the intended transition in its Missile Warning and Tracking Enduring Service Requirements.

Why the transition schedule is not guaranteed

The planned proliferated warning and tracking layer faces delivery risks. In a review published January 28, 2026 and revised February 2, 2026, the U.S. Government Accountability Office identified concerns involving readiness, schedule, transparency of requirements, and cost estimates for the Space Development Agency’s planned system. GAO cited plans for 300–500 LEO satellites and nearly $35 billion through fiscal year 2029; these are planning figures, not a confirmed final deployed count or completed cost. The review is available as GAO-26-107085.

  • HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.

That assessment does not establish that warning coverage has been lost. It does mean that planned capabilities and target windows should be distinguished from systems already in service: the architecture is being transitioned, and delivery of future layers carries schedule and execution risk.
