Choose a total-market fund when you want one fund covering U.S. companies of many sizes; choose an S&P 500 fund when you specifically want large-cap U.S. stocks. A total-market index normally already contains the S&P 500 companies, so buying both usually increases your large-cap exposure instead of creating two independent slices of the U.S. market. The better choice depends on the exposure you want, then on each fund’s benchmark, costs, tracking record, risks and fit with your account.
What’s the difference between an S&P 500 fund and a total market fund?
An S&P 500 fund is designed to follow an index of leading large-cap U.S. companies. A total U.S. stock market fund is designed to cover a much wider range of company sizes, from large companies through mid-cap, small-cap and micro-cap stocks.

| Comparison | S&P 500 fund | Total U.S. stock market fund |
|---|---|---|
| Primary exposure | Large-cap U.S. companies | Large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap U.S. companies |
| Typical index design | Float-adjusted, market-cap-weighted index of 500 leading large-cap companies | Broad-market index intended to represent the investable U.S. equity market; construction varies by provider |
| Relationship between the categories | Represents the large-company segment | Usually contains the S&P 500 segment plus companies outside it |
| What adding it to the other category usually does | Raises the portfolio’s large-cap weighting when added to a total-market fund | Adds smaller-company exposure when held alone, but does not create a separate U.S. market when combined with an S&P 500 fund |
| Best fit | An investor seeking a deliberate large-cap U.S. allocation | An investor seeking broad U.S. stock exposure through one fund |
Neither label predicts which option will earn a higher return. Both are U.S. equity exposures, and neither one by itself supplies international stocks, bonds, cash or other asset classes. A decision about these funds is therefore a decision about the breadth and emphasis of your U.S. stock allocation, not a complete portfolio plan.
What does the S&P 500 actually cover?
500 leading large-cap companies
S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the S&P 500 as a float-adjusted, market-capitalization-weighted index of 500 leading companies in the large-cap segment of the U.S. market. “Float-adjusted” means the weighting uses shares available to public investors rather than every share that may exist, while market-cap weighting gives larger companies greater influence.

The provider’s index-page characteristics, displayed as of August 31, 2026, report approximately 80% coverage of available U.S. market capitalization. That is a dated provider figure, not a permanent percentage: the market’s size, eligible companies and index methodology can change.
What the 500-company label does not tell you
The name does not mean every fund owns the same securities in exactly the same proportions. A fund may use full replication or sampling, and its portfolio can differ temporarily from the index because of cash, trading costs, corporate actions, rebalancing and other implementation details. The index label also does not state the fund’s expense ratio, trading spread, tax characteristics or account-level charges.
What does a total U.S. stock market index cover?
Large through micro-cap stocks
The S&P Total Market Index is designed to include large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap stocks. Its S&P 500 and Completion Index components together form the broad index; the Completion Index consists of Total Market constituents outside the S&P 500.

The large-cap segment remains inside the broad market, while the additional holdings extend down the capitalization scale.
“Total market” is not one universal benchmark
Funds using a total-market description can track different indexes. For example, Vanguard says its Total Stock Market Index Fund seeks to track the CRSP U.S. Total Market Index, which it describes as representing approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market and including large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap stocks. That description applies to that fund and benchmark; it should not be treated as the definition of every total-market product.
Before buying, read the fund’s prospectus and current provider materials to identify the exact benchmark, eligibility rules, weighting method, rebalancing schedule and portfolio-construction approach. Two funds can use similar names while producing somewhat different exposures.

Does a total market fund already include the S&P 500?
In the broad-market designs described above, yes. The total-market index contains the S&P 500 portion, and the Completion Index represents the constituents outside that portion. A total-market fund therefore gives you exposure to the large companies represented in the S&P 500 as well as additional mid-, small- and micro-cap companies.
The exact percentage invested in S&P 500 constituents changes with market prices, index rules, additions and deletions, and the fund’s implementation. Check current holdings rather than assuming a fixed overlap percentage.
Should I own both?
When holding both is mainly a large-cap tilt
If you hold a total-market fund and add an S&P 500 fund, the second fund generally increases the weight of large companies you already own indirectly through the total-market fund. You are choosing a deliberate large-cap tilt, not automatically adding a separate, non-overlapping U.S. market segment.
For example, an investor might prefer a broad-market core but intentionally add more large-cap exposure. That can be a coherent allocation decision if the investor understands the overlap and accepts that the resulting portfolio is less evenly spread across company sizes than the total-market fund alone.
When owning both may be unnecessary
If your objective is simply broad U.S. equity exposure, one appropriately constructed total-market fund may already accomplish it. Adding a second fund can increase costs, create more trades and make the portfolio harder to monitor without adding the small- and mid-cap exposure that the investor actually wanted.
How to check the overlap in your funds
- Open each fund’s latest holdings file or portfolio page.
- Identify the benchmark each fund tracks, not just the marketing name.
- Compare the largest positions and the capitalization segments represented.
- Look at the combined portfolio weights to see how much the large-cap segment rises when both funds are held.
- Recheck after major index rebalances or when a fund changes its benchmark or portfolio method.
How should you compare actual funds?
The category decision comes first, but two funds in the same category can produce different investor outcomes. Compare the following items in the prospectus, latest shareholder report and current fund-provider information.

| Item | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark and scope | Index name, company-size range, eligibility rules and weighting method | Determines the exposure you actually receive |
| Expense ratio | Annual operating expenses for the exact share class | Reduces returns whether or not the fund’s index rises |
| Trading and account costs | Commissions, bid-ask spreads, purchase or redemption charges, account fees and any transaction-specific costs | Can make a low-expense fund more expensive to buy, own or sell |
| Tracking difference | How the fund’s net performance has compared with its benchmark over time | Shows the practical effect of expenses, trading, sampling, cash and other frictions |
| Portfolio method | Full replication, sampling, securities lending practices and cash management | Can affect tracking, liquidity and operational risks |
| Risks | U.S. equity volatility, concentration, liquidity, market-cap and implementation risks | Clarifies what can cause losses or unexpected behavior |
| Account fit | Availability, minimums, purchase mechanics, tax treatment and the way your account charges for transactions | A suitable index can still be inconvenient or costly in a particular account |
What fees and expenses can I expect to pay for buying, owning, and selling this fund?
The SEC’s investor guidance says to ask this question before investing. The answer depends on the specific fund, share class, account and transaction method; current matched fees for representative products are not established here, so use the latest documents rather than a generic category average.
Fund operating expenses
The expense ratio is the annual operating cost deducted from fund assets. It is not normally billed as a separate invoice, but it lowers the fund’s net asset value and therefore your return relative to the index. Compare the exact share class because institutional, retirement-plan, investor and exchange-traded versions can have different expenses or eligibility rules.
Trading costs
Buying or selling can involve a commission, a bid-ask spread, a market-impact cost or a purchase and redemption fee, depending on the security and account. An exchange-traded fund can trade above or below its net asset value during the day, while a mutual fund generally processes orders at its next calculated net asset value. The prospectus and your account’s fee schedule establish the applicable charges.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOther ownership charges
Some accounts impose maintenance, wire, transfer or transaction fees that are separate from the fund’s expense ratio. A fund with a low operating-expense figure is not automatically the lowest-cost choice if your account imposes expensive trades or does not offer the fund on favorable terms.
What the SEC says about index-fund costs
The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy explains: “You cannot invest directly in a market index, but because index funds track market indexes they provide an indirect investment option.” The SEC also notes that fees, trading costs and tracking error can cause an index fund to underperform its index, and recommends reading the prospectus and latest shareholder report.
How does tracking differ from the index?
An index fund’s goal is to follow its benchmark, not to beat it. The relevant comparison is the fund’s net return versus the index return over comparable periods, after considering the benchmark’s own assumptions and the fund’s expenses.

A gap can arise from the expense ratio, brokerage and market-impact costs, cash held for operations, sampling instead of owning every constituent, timing differences, securities-lending revenue, corporate actions and tax-related effects. A single year can be noisy; examine several periods and confirm that the comparison uses the same benchmark and distribution treatment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What risks are different?
S&P 500 concentration
An S&P 500 fund concentrates on large-cap companies. Because the index is market-cap weighted, the largest constituents can account for substantial portions of the portfolio. A decline in a few very large companies can therefore affect the fund more than it would affect a portfolio with broader size exposure.
Total-market breadth
A total-market fund adds mid-, small- and micro-cap stocks. Those companies can behave differently from established large companies and may have greater business, liquidity or price volatility. Broader coverage reduces reliance on one capitalization segment, but it does not remove the risk of losing money in a falling U.S. stock market.
Shared risks
- Both categories are primarily U.S. stocks and can experience substantial short-term and long-term declines.
- Market-cap weighting does not protect against overvaluation, recessions, interest-rate changes or sector concentration.
- Index methodology, rebalancing and fund implementation can create differences between a fund and the index it tracks.
- Neither category supplies guaranteed income or principal protection.
Which fund fits your goal?
Choose a total-market fund when breadth is the priority
- You want one fund covering large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap U.S. companies.
- You do not want to make a separate large-cap-versus-small-cap allocation decision.
- You understand that the benchmark and portfolio method differ among providers and are willing to verify them.
This choice is a broad U.S. equity building block, not a promise of higher returns. You still need to decide whether your overall plan requires international stocks, bonds, cash or other assets.

Choose an S&P 500 fund when large-cap exposure is intentional
- You specifically want the leading large-cap segment of the U.S. market.
- Your broader portfolio already supplies the smaller-company exposure you want, or you are intentionally excluding it.
- You prefer the simplicity of evaluating a clearly defined large-cap benchmark.
Confirm that the fund actually tracks an S&P 500 benchmark and compare its implementation and costs with other funds using the same index.
Best Value
Use both only with a stated allocation reason
Holding both can make sense when you have decided on a target large-cap tilt and will maintain it deliberately. Write down the intended percentages, calculate the combined exposure using current holdings and review the allocation when prices or contributions change. Do not assume the two funds diversify each other merely because they have different names.
A practical selection process
- Define the exposure. Decide whether you want broad U.S. company-size coverage or a large-cap-only allocation.
- Identify the benchmark. Record the exact index name and read its methodology summary.
- Verify the fund structure. Determine whether the fund uses full replication or sampling and how it handles cash, rebalancing and securities lending.
- Read current documents. Use the prospectus and latest shareholder report for expenses, risks, purchase rules and portfolio policies.
- Compare tracking. Review performance against the same benchmark over multiple periods, accounting for distributions and the relevant share class.
- Calculate all costs. Add the expense ratio to account, trading, spread and any purchase or sale charges that apply to you.
- Check the overlap. If you may hold both categories, combine current holdings and measure the resulting large-cap weight.
- Test the plan under stress. Ask whether you could continue holding a 100% U.S. stock allocation through a major decline and whether your overall portfolio has the diversification you require.
- Place the order carefully. Confirm the ticker, share class, order type, settlement details and account before submitting; then verify that the executed position matches your plan.
Common mistakes to avoid
Treating “total market” as a standardized product
The phrase describes an objective, not one compulsory index. Check whether the benchmark includes micro-cap stocks, how it defines investable companies and how it weights them.
Assuming two funds create independent diversification
Because the broad-market fund already contains large-cap stocks, adding an S&P 500 fund commonly changes the weighting of the same companies rather than adding a new market segment.
Recommended Free Tools
Choosing on recent returns
Large-cap and smaller-company stocks lead at different times. A recent winner is not evidence of a reliable future advantage, and the available index descriptions do not forecast returns.
Comparing expense ratios but ignoring implementation
A lower stated expense ratio can be offset by wider trading spreads, transaction charges or a larger tracking difference. Evaluate the complete cost of buying, owning and selling.
Forgetting the rest of the portfolio
Either fund leaves you concentrated in U.S. equities. Review your international, fixed-income, cash and emergency-reserve needs separately rather than treating one U.S. index fund as a complete financial plan.
Bottom line: which is right for you?
Pick a total-market fund if your priority is broad U.S. stock exposure across company sizes. Pick an S&P 500 fund if your priority is a focused large-cap U.S. allocation. If you buy both, do so because you want an explicit large-cap tilt and have measured the overlap—not because you expect two labels to provide two separate markets. For any named fund, confirm the current benchmark, prospectus, shareholder report, expenses, trading costs, tracking behavior and account fit before investing.
