The S&P 500 set two records on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026: it briefly reached a new intraday high, then finished at a record closing level. Contemporaneous market reports pointed to enthusiasm around artificial intelligence, expectations for corporate earnings, easing Treasury yields and falling oil as supportive themes—not to any one proven cause.
What records did the S&P 500 set?
Reuters reported an intraday high of 7,817.13 points on the morning of Oct. 6, above the previous intraday record of 7,816.7 set on Aug. 13. Later, the Associated Press reported that the index closed at 7,818.93, up 44.98 points, or 0.6%, for the day. The close exceeded the August record, making it a separate record from the morning high.

The different figures reflect different moments in the session: an intraday peak and the final closing level. During the day, MT Newswires described the S&P 500 as up nearly 1% and approaching its first record close since August; that was an in-session update, not the final result.
Why were stocks rising while oil fell?
AI optimism and earnings expectations
Reuters cited the AI trade and expectations for strong corporate earnings among the sources of optimism. MT Newswires likewise described enthusiasm about AI and corporate resilience as supportive. These are contemporaneous explanations of investor sentiment, not evidence that AI alone produced the record.

Lower oil and easing inflation concerns
Bloomberg’s Oct. 6 market wrap, republished by Moneyweb, reported Brent crude at $98 per barrel. It connected the oil decline with less inflation anxiety and some relief for Treasuries. The excerpt does not give an exact observation time, so $98 should not be read as the closing settlement price.
Oil matters to markets partly because energy prices can influence inflation expectations and the outlook for interest rates. On this day, coverage described falling oil as a helpful part of the market backdrop; it does not establish a fixed or automatic relationship in which lower oil always lifts stocks.

Treasury yields and broader market strength
Reuters also noted that Treasury yields eased from multi-year highs as technology stocks advanced. The advance was not confined to the S&P 500: AP reported a 0.5% gain for the Dow, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.4% to its own all-time high from the previous day.
How to read the session’s numbers
| Measure | Oct. 6 reported figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 intraday high | 7,817.13 points (Reuters) | Morning peak; above the prior 7,816.7 intraday record set Aug. 13. |
| S&P 500 close | 7,818.93 points; +44.98 points, or 0.6% (Associated Press) | Final closing level and daily change; a record close. |
| Brent crude | $98 per barrel (Bloomberg via Moneyweb) | Level reported in the market wrap; exact observation time not stated in the available excerpt, so not a confirmed settlement price. |
What the record does—and does not—show
The Oct. 6 record came after several days of gains: MT Newswires characterized the advance as the fourth consecutive day. That describes the run-up into this session, not a guarantee about what followed. The index levels, oil price, yields and investor themes here are a dated snapshot of Oct. 6, 2026, rather than a statement about current market conditions.
