U.S. stocks were mixed early on October 5, 2026: the S&P 500 rose and the Nasdaq Composite reached an intraday all-time high as major technology shares advanced, while the Dow edged lower. The gains came alongside competing pressures from high Treasury yields, energy costs and geopolitical uncertainty.
Where the major indexes stood
At 10:19 a.m. ET, Reuters reported the S&P 500 at 7,753.05, up 0.39%, and the Nasdaq Composite at 27,360.28, up 0.62%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 51,110.61, down 0.13%. These were intraday readings, not closing prices; the report described the Nasdaq as reaching an all-time high during the session.

Megacap technology shares helped lead the advance
Reuters reported that heavyweight technology and growth stocks were among the early leaders. Nvidia gained 1.1% and was near the record it had reached in the prior session; Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Tesla each rose more than 1%. Dennis Dick, founder and market structure analyst at Triple D Trading, described the sector’s influence this way: “The AI and tech story continues to drive the bus … it is so strong that it can fight the headwind from higher interest rates,”

That comment is an analyst’s interpretation of the market, not proof that technology shares alone caused the index moves. The report also pointed to optimism about corporate earnings and the previous week’s softer-than-expected jobs data, which lowered the perceived likelihood of an October rate increase.
Why investors were still watching interest rates and other risks
The advance took place against a challenging backdrop. Reuters put the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield at 5.296% and described yields as near multi-year highs, with concerns about government finances, heavy debt issuance and elevated energy costs weighing on sentiment. Brent crude was near $100 a barrel, while geopolitical uncertainty added another risk.

Traders were reported to see an 80% chance that the Federal Reserve would hold rates steady in October, while a December increase remained largely priced in. Those figures reflect market-implied expectations reported at that time; they are not Fed decisions or assurances about what the central bank would do.
Peter Andersen, founder of Andersen Capital Management, offered a more optimistic view of the rate pressure: “Many investors expect higher yields to derail the equity rally, but I think the market still has enough momentum to push through further increases in interest rates,” That is his opinion, not a guaranteed forecast.
Earnings optimism was a forecast, not a reported result
Reuters cited Goldman Sachs analysts’ expectation of 9% year-on-year earnings growth for the median S&P 500 stock for the quarter. This was a forecast reported in the October 5 story, not a realized earnings figure. The underlying Goldman Sachs publication was not independently checked for this account.
Notable individual stock moves in the report
The same intraday snapshot included sharp moves linked to company-specific news:
Rank #4
- PTC rose 34.6% after Schneider Electric agreed to acquire it in a $22.6 billion all-cash deal.
- RXO advanced 22.5% after C.H. Robinson agreed to buy it in a stock-and-cash transaction valued at $5.8 billion; C.H. Robinson fell 11.8%.
- Cerebras Systems rose 9.5% after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called it a “close partner,” according to Reuters.
These deal terms and share-price changes describe the October 5 report’s snapshot; they are not a broader account of the companies’ subsequent performance.

“Nasdaq at a record high” refers to the Nasdaq Composite’s intraday level reported during this session, not necessarily its closing level. Likewise, the S&P 500’s gain is an early-session observation. To compare this session with another, use closing values and the same return period, and distinguish intraday highs from closes. Index breadth, sector leadership, Treasury yields and rate expectations also help explain whether a headline gain was broad or concentrated.
