Used cooking oil (UCO) usually has the lifecycle-emissions advantage, but it is not automatically the best feedstock for every biodiesel plant. A 2022 U.S. study grouped UCO pathways with other waste oils and reported larger greenhouse-gas reductions than for oilseed pathways that include soybean. Those ranges are not a precise, one-to-one soybean-versus-UCO measurement. Your decision also depends on collection radius, contamination and preprocessing, conversion inputs, fuel-property targets, plant scale, and the rules in the market where the fuel will be sold.
Soybean oil vs. used cooking oil for biodiesel production: what is being compared?
Both feedstocks can be converted into biodiesel, normally a fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), through transesterification. In that process, oil reacts with an alcohol and a catalyst, producing biodiesel and a co-product stream. Biodiesel is not the same fuel as renewable diesel. Renewable diesel is made by hydroprocessing and is chemically closer to petroleum diesel; it follows a different pathway and should not inherit biodiesel’s emissions or property claims.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) describes vegetable oils, used or recycled cooking oil, and restaurant yellow grease as established biodiesel feedstocks. Its overview also explains that feedstocks can change the finished fuel’s physical properties and potential uses. See EIA’s biodiesel and renewable-diesel explanation.
For regulatory analysis, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines a pathway by three linked elements: “A renewable fuel pathway includes three critical components: (1) feedstock, (2) production process and (3) fuel type.” Read the EPA pathway definition before comparing numbers from different fuels or processes.

Which feedstock is more sustainable?
What the 2022 U.S. lifecycle study found
Hao Xu and colleagues’ U.S. lifecycle analysis, published in Environmental Science & Technology in 2022, reported a 40%–69% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions versus petroleum diesel for biodiesel and renewable-diesel pathways made from oilseed crops including soybean, after land-use-change estimates. The same study reported 79%–86% reductions for pathways using used cooking oil, tallow or distillers corn oil. The results are reported as ranges for groups of pathways, so they do not establish a single percentage-point advantage for UCO over soybean oil, nor do they show that every UCO supply chain performs identically.
The study is available through PubMed’s record for Xu et al., “Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel Production in the United States”. When quoting the figures, retain the U.S. setting, the 2022 publication context, the inclusion of land-use-change estimates, and the fact that biodiesel and renewable diesel are grouped in the reported pathways.
Why waste oil often scores better
A crop-based pathway can carry emissions from field operations, fertilizer manufacture and application, nitrous-oxide releases from soil, crop processing and the treatment of co-products. Land-use change can materially alter the result if additional cropland is associated with demand for the oil. A waste-oil pathway generally avoids the need to grow a new oil crop, which is why allocation and land-use assumptions can favor it.

Collection vehicles consume fuel, oil may travel to a rendering or preprocessing site, and conditioning the material requires energy. The transesterification plant still uses heat, electricity, alcohol and catalyst. Losses, rejected batches and disposal of contaminants can also affect the result. A short, dense collection route and a clean, consistent stream can therefore outperform a dispersed route that requires extensive transport and reprocessing.
Keep lifecycle boundaries consistent
EPA lifecycle accounting includes feedstock production and transport, fuel production and distribution, and use of the finished fuel. The boundary matters: a number covering only conversion cannot be compared directly with a number covering farming, land-use change, distribution and combustion. Allocation of emissions among biodiesel and co-products also changes the result. Use the same boundary, allocation method, geography and fuel type when evaluating bids or sustainability claims.

What the EU directive numbers mean
The consolidated Renewable Energy Directive table lists 3.2 g CO2eq/MJ as a typical processing-stage value and 4.4 g CO2eq/MJ as a default value for soybean biodiesel. In the same table, waste-cooking-oil biodiesel is listed at 0 g CO2eq/MJ for both typical and default processing-stage values. These figures are regulatory illustrations for the processing stage; they are not total lifecycle emissions and must not be compared directly with the U.S. study’s percentage reductions. Consult the EU consolidated Renewable Energy Directive text dated November 20, 2023 for the table and its accounting context.
Feedstock availability and market context
Soybean oil supply
Soybean oil comes through an agricultural commodity chain. A producer may benefit from established crushing, storage and transport infrastructure, predictable specification contracts and large volumes during the crop-marketing cycle. Exposure to crop yields, fertilizer costs, competing food and feed demand, and vegetable-oil prices remains part of the business case.
Used cooking oil supply
UCO is a distributed waste stream. Restaurants, institutional kitchens, food processors and rendering businesses may hold the material, but the volume and quality vary by site. Collection density, container turnover, theft or diversion controls, water and solids, and time in storage all affect the usable yield. A plant close to a reliable collection network can have a very different economics and carbon profile from a plant that imports UCO over long distances.
What historical U.S. data show—and do not show
EIA data republished in 2019 show that soybean oil supplied about half of U.S. biodiesel feedstock inputs during 2014–2017. The same historical account says yellow grease exceeded 10% of total U.S. biofuel feedstock in 2017. These figures demonstrate commercial use, but they are not current market shares. They should not be used to forecast today’s regional availability or prices.
Does used cooking oil make better biodiesel?
“Better” depends on the specification. Feedstock composition can influence cloud point (cold-flow behavior), cetane number (ignition quality) and oxidative stability (storage sensitivity). These properties affect blending limits, winter handling, tank residence time and additive choices. EIA discusses these comparison axes in its analysis of biodiesels made from different feedstocks; see “Biodiesels produced from certain feedstocks have distinct properties from petroleum diesel.”

The available evidence does not provide a direct, controlled measurement set that ranks soybean biodiesel against UCO biodiesel on all three properties. Do not promise that one feedstock always has the higher cetane number, better cold-weather performance or longer storage life. Test the actual lots you will buy and the finished B100 or blend you will sell.
How to choose and process either feedstock
1. Define the fuel and compliance target
- Decide whether the product is FAME biodiesel or hydroprocessed renewable diesel. Do not mix their pathway calculations.
- Specify the intended blend, climate, storage period, engine approvals and applicable fuel standard.
- Identify the lifecycle or renewable-fuel program used by your jurisdiction and the documentation it requires.
2. Write a feedstock specification before negotiating price
For soybean oil, define acceptable grade, delivery temperature, storage condition and permitted contaminants. For UCO, define sampling frequency, water and sediment limits, free-fatty-acid range, polymerized material, cleaning chemicals and traceability. A price per tonne is meaningless if one supplier delivers a clean, consistent oil and another delivers a variable stream that needs extensive conditioning.
3. Map the logistics
- List suppliers, annual volume, seasonal variation and minimum pickup or delivery quantities.
- Calculate one-way distance, truck capacity, backhaul opportunities and storage requirements.
- Include loading, unloading, heating, filtration, testing, rejected loads and waste disposal in the delivered-cost model.
- For UCO, verify collection contracts and chain-of-custody records; for soybean oil, verify origin and any land-use or sustainability data required by the buyer or regulator.
4. Characterize and condition the oil
Receive representative samples rather than relying on a supplier’s historical average. Test the incoming material against the plant’s operating envelope, remove water and solids as required, and document the mass balance. UCO often needs more variable preprocessing than soybean oil, but the correct treatment is determined by the actual stream and equipment—not by the label “waste.”
5. Run transesterification under controlled conditions
Adjust alcohol, catalyst, mixing, temperature and residence time to the measured feedstock quality and the plant’s validated recipe. High variability can increase soap formation, separation time, reagent consumption or off-specification batches. Keep records of feedstock lot, process conditions, yields and co-products so that a lifecycle calculation can use real operating data.
6. Separate, purify and verify the finished fuel
Separate biodiesel from glycerol and other by-products, remove residual alcohol and catalyst, dry the fuel, and test it against the specification for the intended market. Check cold-flow behavior, oxidation stability, water and sediment, acid value, glycerin, metals and other required parameters. A favorable feedstock carbon score does not compensate for fuel that fails quality requirements.

7. Recalculate the pathway with actual data
Update the lifecycle model with measured collection distances, electricity and heat use, chemical consumption, yields, co-product allocation and finished-fuel distribution. EPA’s lifecycle-analysis guidance explains why feedstock, process and fuel must be evaluated together.

The cited sources do not establish a current, comparable soybean-oil price, UCO price, preprocessing cost or delivered cost for a specific region. Soybean oil may offer scale and consistency, while UCO may offer a lower-cost waste input but higher collection, testing and conditioning expense. Either advantage can disappear when transport distances, storage losses, quality rejects, financing, labor and compliance costs are included.
Build a scenario model rather than choosing by headline price. At minimum, compare:
- Delivered feedstock cost per usable tonne, not per contracted tonne.
- Expected biodiesel yield and the value or disposal cost of co-products.
- Energy, alcohol, catalyst, filtration, drying and wastewater requirements.
- Collection, storage, insurance, testing and rejected-load costs.
- Plant utilization and the cost of feedstock interruptions.
- Lifecycle credits, renewable-fuel certificates or other jurisdiction-specific value, using the approved pathway calculation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling a grouped range a head-to-head result
The 40%–69% and 79%–86% U.S. figures are pathway groups. Presenting their endpoints as an exact soybean-versus-UCO gap overstates the evidence. Describe the groups, boundary and date every time you quote them.
Confusing processing emissions with lifecycle emissions
The EU values are processing-stage figures. They do not replace a full accounting of farming or collection, transport, conversion, distribution and fuel use. Keep those categories in separate tables and calculations.

Assuming all UCO is identical
Waste oil quality varies by generator, cooking practice, storage and collection route. A plant should buy against a measured specification and reject or reprice material that falls outside it.
Assuming a feedstock determines fuel properties by itself
Feedstock composition matters, but processing, blending, additives, storage and the finished-fuel specification matter too. Use laboratory results for the actual product rather than a generic ranking.
Using historical shares as current market intelligence
The EIA’s soybean and yellow-grease figures describe 2014–2017 and 2017 conditions. Obtain current local supply and price data before committing capital or signing a long-term contract.

Choose soybean oil when a plant needs large, consistent volumes, has efficient access to oilseed infrastructure, and the resulting pathway meets its carbon and fuel-quality targets at an acceptable delivered cost. Choose UCO when a verified collection network can supply consistent material, preprocessing capacity is available, and the waste-based pathway’s lifecycle value outweighs the added logistics and quality-management work.
For many projects, the strongest answer is not “soybean” or “UCO” in isolation but a documented pathway decision: define the fuel, measure the feedstock, model transport and conversion, test the finished biodiesel, and use the accounting method required in the target market. On the evidence available, UCO is the leading candidate for lower lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions, while soybean oil remains a commercially established option whose consistency and infrastructure can be decisive.
