Yes—Southwest has changed its Wi‑Fi offering. Rapid Rewards members can use free Wi‑Fi on designated Wi‑Fi-equipped aircraft, while paid access is listed at $8 per device when offered. Southwest is also installing a newer Starlink service on selected aircraft. Starlink is designed for higher-bandwidth activities such as streaming, cloud work and online gaming, but it is not on every aircraft and an aircraft assignment can change before departure.
The practical rule is to check your trip in the Southwest app, then verify the service again after boarding. The app displays WiFi Powered by Starlink when the currently assigned aircraft is expected to have Starlink, but Southwest warns that last-minute aircraft swaps can change that result.

What changed in Southwest Wi‑Fi?
Southwest now has two distinct onboard internet experiences rather than one uniform product:
- Standard Southwest Wi‑Fi: available on designated Wi‑Fi-enabled aircraft. Rapid Rewards members can receive it free where available; other passengers may be offered a paid session.
- Starlink Wi‑Fi: installed on selected aircraft and intended to support more demanding uses, including streaming, online gaming, cloud applications and several connected devices.
These categories describe the aircraft’s equipment, not a route-wide guarantee. The same city pair can be operated by different aircraft on different days, and an aircraft can be changed shortly before departure. A route that had Starlink yesterday does not prove that today’s flight will have it.

Southwest announced the Starlink service on February 11, 2026, describing a rollout across its network of 11 countries. In its first-quarter 2026 filing, the airline said it planned to integrate at least 300 Starlink-equipped aircraft by the end of 2026. That figure is a company target, not a verified count already in service.
Is Southwest Wi‑Fi free now?
Rapid Rewards members
Southwest says Rapid Rewards members receive free Wi‑Fi on designated Wi‑Fi-enabled aircraft when the service is available. You do not need to be a T‑Mobile customer. Free access still depends on the aircraft having an operational Wi‑Fi system; membership does not create coverage where the aircraft has no service.
At the onboard portal, sign in with your Rapid Rewards details. Southwest also documents a confirmation-number method for travelers whose Rapid Rewards account is linked to the reservation. Have the account email or booking confirmation available before connecting, because authentication is performed in the portal rather than through your phone’s normal cellular connection.

Passengers without free eligibility
Southwest’s current help information lists paid Wi‑Fi at $8 per device per flight when paid access is available. The airline says the price can change, the session might not remain available for the entire flight, and some high-bandwidth applications, websites or video calls may be blocked. Treat $8 as the currently published price for an eligible flight, not a permanent or universal fare.

Standard Wi‑Fi versus Starlink
| Feature | Standard Southwest Wi‑Fi | Starlink Wi‑Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Designated Wi‑Fi-enabled aircraft | Selected aircraft identified in the app and onboard portal |
| Rapid Rewards access | Free where available | Service and eligibility are still subject to the assigned aircraft; follow the onboard portal’s instructions |
| Published paid price | $8 per device when paid service is offered; price may change | Not stated separately by Southwest in the cited guidance |
| Typical supported activities | Web use and other permitted applications; high-bandwidth uses may be restricted | Southwest describes streaming, cloud work, online gaming and multi-device use |
| Onboard entertainment portal | Availability of movies, television and live television can vary by aircraft and licensing | Southwest says its onboard portal entertainment is unavailable; use your own streaming services over Wi‑Fi |
| Coverage certainty | Not every aircraft has Wi‑Fi, and service can be interrupted | Not every aircraft has Starlink; aircraft can be swapped |
The table reflects Southwest’s published descriptions, not an independent speed test. The airline has not supplied a measured speed benchmark in the cited materials, so “faster” should be understood as a description of capability and capacity rather than a guaranteed megabits-per-second result.
How to check whether your flight has Starlink
- Open the Southwest app and view the trip. Look for the exact label WiFi Powered by Starlink in the flight details.
- Use the label as a forecast, not a promise. Southwest says aircraft assignments may change at the last minute. Recheck the trip near departure and rely on the onboard network name after you sit down.
- Confirm after boarding. The onboard connection portal identifies Starlink when that aircraft is equipped for it. If the portal does not identify Starlink, use the standard Wi‑Fi instructions instead.
There is no reliable way to infer Starlink availability solely from the origin, destination, flight number or departure time. Equipment assignment is the deciding factor.
How to connect to Southwest Wi‑Fi
- Enable airplane mode. This turns off cellular transmission as required during the flight.
- Turn Wi‑Fi back on. Airplane mode and Wi‑Fi can be used together on a modern phone, tablet or laptop.
- Join the Southwest Wi‑Fi network. Select the Southwest network shown in your device’s available networks. Network names can be displayed differently by device software, so choose the network identified by the cabin signage or portal.
- Open the portal. Launch a browser and go to the onboard portal or enter SouthwestWiFi.com. If the sign-in page does not appear automatically, typing the address manually usually triggers the captive portal.
- Choose your access method. Sign in with Rapid Rewards credentials for eligible free access, or use the confirmation-number method when your account is linked to the reservation. If free access is not available, the portal will show whether paid access is offered and its current price.
- Keep the session on the same device. A paid pass is described per device. Moving between a phone and laptop can require another session or another charge.
If the portal will not load
- Check that Wi‑Fi is on while airplane mode remains enabled.
- Disconnect from a virtual private network or manually configured proxy temporarily; captive portals can fail to redirect through them.
- Open a new browser tab and enter SouthwestWiFi.com rather than waiting for an automatic pop-up.
- Forget the Southwest network, reconnect, and try again.
- If the aircraft has just departed, wait until the onboard network is fully available; an initial connection delay does not prove that Wi‑Fi is absent.
If the service is unavailable for the aircraft or has been disabled, no device setting can create a connection. Ask a flight attendant whether the network is expected to return before buying a paid session.

Southwest describes Starlink as supporting streaming from your preferred services, live sports, music downloads, online gaming, cloud work and multiple connected devices from takeoff to landing when the service is available. That language is the airline’s intended service description, not an independent performance guarantee. Actual performance can still vary with aircraft equipment, network load, weather-related operational decisions and the websites or applications you use.

Starlink aircraft are unusual in one important respect: Southwest says the normal onboard entertainment portal is unavailable on those aircraft. You should therefore download any content you want available offline and bring the log-ins for your own streaming services. A Starlink label does not mean that free movies or television will appear in the onboard portal.
How entertainment differs on non-Starlink aircraft
On standard-equipped aircraft, Southwest’s portal may offer free movies, television and live television. The selection can vary because of aircraft availability and licensing restrictions. A title shown on one flight may not be offered on another, and a service interruption can remove access during the flight.
Southwest requires headphones when a passenger listens to audio onboard. Pack personal earbuds or other headphones for listening; they do not improve the Wi‑Fi signal and are not required to authenticate to the network.

The 11-country network description
In its February 11, 2026 announcement, Southwest described Starlink service across a network spanning 11 countries. This states the scope of the airline’s network plan; it does not mean every airport, route or aircraft in those countries has Starlink.

The 300-aircraft target
Southwest’s first-quarter 2026 filing set a goal of integrating at least 300 Starlink-equipped aircraft by the end of 2026. A target can be revised and does not establish how many aircraft were equipped on a particular date. Travelers should use the app’s aircraft-specific indicator instead of estimating odds from that target.
No published speed promise
The cited Southwest materials do not provide an independent speed-test result or a guaranteed minimum speed. The airline’s executive vice president Tony Roach said, “Starlink delivers that at-home experience in the air, giving Customers the ability to stream their favorite shows from any platform, watch live sports, download music, play games, work, and connect with loved ones from takeoff to landing.” That is Southwest’s description of the intended experience, not a laboratory measurement or promise that every session will match a home broadband connection.

The app showed Starlink, but the aircraft changed
Use the network and portal on the aircraft you actually board. If the replacement aircraft is standard-equipped, follow the standard Wi‑Fi limitations and entertainment rules. Do not purchase accessories or download a large file on the assumption that the original aircraft will operate the flight.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You are a Rapid Rewards member but see a payment screen
Confirm that you entered the account associated with the reservation, or use the confirmation number if Southwest offers that option. Check that the aircraft is designated Wi‑Fi-enabled. Membership alone does not help when the aircraft has no service, and a paid screen can appear when free authentication has not yet succeeded.

A video call or game will not work
Standard Wi‑Fi may block high-bandwidth applications, websites or video calls. A Starlink-equipped aircraft is described as supporting online gaming and cloud work, but that does not override restrictions imposed by a specific application, the service’s servers or onboard network controls. Try lower-bandwidth work such as messaging, email or document editing if the activity remains blocked.
Streaming works, but the onboard movie list is empty
That is expected on Starlink aircraft according to Southwest’s guidance. Use your own streaming service over the Wi‑Fi connection. On standard aircraft, portal content can still vary because of licensing and aircraft availability.
You need reliable work access
Download critical documents before boarding, keep an offline copy of your presentation and avoid scheduling an essential meeting that depends entirely on a video call. Southwest does not promise uninterrupted service or unrestricted application access, and the aircraft can change.
What to do before departure
- Join Rapid Rewards if you want to use the member Wi‑Fi benefit and make sure the account details match the reservation.
- Check the trip in the Southwest app for the WiFi Powered by Starlink label, then check again close to departure.
- Download entertainment and work files for offline use. This matters especially if the app predicts Starlink, because Southwest says its onboard entertainment portal is unavailable there.
- Pack headphones for any audio you plan to hear onboard.
- Carry a backup plan for payments or urgent work. The published $8 price is conditional, may change and does not guarantee a full-flight session.
Bottom line for choosing your expectations
Southwest’s Wi‑Fi has changed in two ways that affect most travelers: free access is tied to Rapid Rewards membership on eligible aircraft, and Starlink is being added to selected aircraft for a broader set of online activities. Check the aircraft-specific indicator, authenticate through the onboard portal and treat every availability, price and entertainment detail as conditional. The app and the portal are more dependable than a route assumption because Southwest can change aircraft shortly before departure.
