South Korea’s Nuri Rocket: Fifth Launch Scheduled, Hanwha’s Role Still Unclear

South Korea’s space agency scheduled the fifth launch of its Nuri rocket for October 7, 2026, but the available official and news reports do not confirm that it lifted off. Nor do they establish that Hanwha Aerospace took part in the fifth flight: the company’s production and launch-management role is confirmed for Nuri’s fourth launch, while its expanded role in the fifth was conditional.

What was planned for Nuri’s fifth launch?

Nuri, also known as the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II (KSLV-II), is South Korea’s homegrown launch vehicle. On August 27, 2026, the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) announced October 7 as the planned date for its fifth flight, with October 8–14 set aside as backup dates in case of schedule changes, including weather. The planned launch window was 12:23–13:23 Korea Standard Time (03:23–04:23 UTC); the exact launch time was to be set on the day. KASA said preparations were under way at the Naro Space Center in Goheung, South Jeolla Province. KASA’s schedule announcement

The launch plan called for 15 satellites, the largest payload count stated for a Nuri mission at the time of the announcement:

  • Five Microsatellite Constellation System spacecraft, intended to support high-frequency, high-precision observation for national security and faster, more accurate disaster response.
  • Ten CubeSats with missions including ionospheric observation, in-space testing of domestically developed electronic components, and ocean-current analysis.

KASA described the flight as the first Korean mission intended to put a satellite constellation into orbit. That was the agency’s stated goal for the planned mission, not a verified result. KASA’s August 27 announcement KASA’s launch approval notice

Did the fifth Nuri launch lift off?

The information available here establishes the schedule and payload plan, not the launch outcome. KASA’s authoritative schedule information was timestamped October 7, 2026, at 08:04 UTC—before the planned launch window began at 03:23 UTC? Actually, 08:04 UTC is after that scheduled window. Because the materials do not verify a liftoff or result by that timestamp, the outcome should not be stated as confirmed. The agency’s August 25 approval notice said preparations would continue through the Launch Management Committee and other mechanisms to ensure payloads were safely placed in orbit. What Hanwha Aerospace has done for Nuri

Hanwha Aerospace’s confirmed contribution is to the fourth Nuri flight, which launched on November 27, 2025. Korea.net reported that Hanwha led production and assembly of the launch vehicle and managed participating companies, making it the first Nuri launch in which a private company was involved across the process from vehicle production to operation. The government account characterized the company’s role in the fifth flight as dependent on an operational review and technology transfer—not as an already completed handover. Korea.net said Hanwha was expected to manage project aspects independently, from launch to transportation, after Nuri’s sixth launch, then expected from 2028. That is a forward-looking expectation reported in 2025, not evidence that the transition had occurred. The distinction matters: Hanwha’s fourth-flight work marks a significant shift toward private-sector participation, but the fifth-flight role remained contingent in the reporting cited here. Korea.net’s account of the planned transition

Why the Nuri program’s handover matters

Nuri’s fifth flight was presented by KASA as a step toward expanding the vehicle’s mission capabilities and South Korea’s space transportation capacity. The satellite count and constellation goal were central to that plan. Separately, the gradual transfer of production and operational responsibilities to Hanwha illustrates a move from a government-led development program toward private industrial participation. The available accounts support that broader transition, but not a claim that Hanwha had completed its fifth-flight handover.
