South Korea’s Kospi suffered a sharp intraday sell-off on October 13, 2026, led by semiconductor shares. Reports linked investor unease to questions about the AI boom’s staying power and the competitive threat posed by Chinese memory-chip maker CXMT, but they do not establish how much any one factor contributed.
How far did the Kospi fall?
The Associated Press reported the Kospi at 5,914.35, down 7.4% on October 13. It described that as the index’s lowest level since late July. The report was an intraday snapshot, not a confirmed closing figure; the reporting available here does not establish where the index finished the session.

The decline came after a severe loss in the previous session. Yonhap News Agency reported that the Kospi closed at 6,384.24 on October 12, down 3.65%, or 241.69 points, extending its losing streak to four sessions. Foreign investors were net sellers of 2.02 trillion won that day, while individual investors were net buyers of 1.47 trillion won.

The Kospi had reached an all-time high above 9,000 in June, according to the AP, during the global AI boom. That longer arc helps explain why concerns about the durability of AI-related demand mattered to investors, but it does not show that the AI rally itself had definitively ended.
Why semiconductor shares were under pressure
The AP reported that Samsung Electronics fell 7.7% and SK Hynix fell 8.8% in its October 13 snapshot. It connected investor concern to reports of advances by CXMT, which could intensify competition for Samsung, SK Hynix and U.S. memory-chip maker Micron. These were reported concerns and market interpretations, not proof that CXMT caused the day’s declines.

Yonhap’s account of the morning move also pointed to losses in U.S. technology stocks. Investors were looking ahead to earnings from major companies and U.S. inflation data. The October 12 report had separately cited inflation concerns and elevated oil prices as part of the backdrop to that session’s losses.
Yonhap quoted Lim Seung-mi, an analyst at Hana Securities Co., discussing the previous day’s sell-off: “The KOSPI plunged amid rebalancing of semiconductor-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and concerns that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix may have completed their treasury stock purchases,”. That comment was an explanation of October 12’s market action; it should not be treated as an explanation for every move on October 13.

Did the exchange halt trading?
Yonhap reported that the Korea Exchange activated a sell-side sidecar at 9:48 a.m. local time after the KOSPI 200 Futures Index fell at least 5% for at least one minute. The measure suspended program trading in KOSPI-listed shares for five minutes.
A sidecar is a temporary market-control measure affecting program orders under specified conditions. In this reported case, it did not amount to a shutdown of all trading: Yonhap described a five-minute suspension of program trading, not a full-market halt. The report does not establish that the sidecar caused the broader decline to stop or reverse.

What the reports do—and do not—establish
The available figures are snapshots of an intraday sell-off, with the AP reporting a later and steeper decline than Yonhap’s 9:50 a.m. update. They should not be presented as the October 13 closing level. Nor do the reports quantify the contribution of AI-related concerns, CXMT competition, U.S. technology losses, upcoming earnings or inflation data to the index’s fall.
The clearest supported picture is of a sharp, semiconductor-led drop amid several reported sources of investor caution. The reporting includes no separate on-record explanation from an exchange official, regulator or company spokesperson for the October 13 sell-off.
