Hyundai Motor Group will invest US$15.5 billion in India between 2026 and 2032, expanding Hyundai and Kia production, Indian engineering and testing, local parts suppliers, and future-mobility projects. Executive Chair Euisun Chung announced the program after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 13, 2026.
What Hyundai’s India investment will fund
The seven-year program is a group-wide commitment covering Hyundai Motor Company and Kia operations in India. Hyundai says the spending is intended to support higher production and exports while building a deeper Indian technology and supplier base.

More manufacturing capacity
Investment will expand manufacturing operations operated by Hyundai and Kia. The companies already have more than 1.4 million vehicles of annual capacity across facilities in Chennai, Pune and Anantapur, according to Hyundai Motor Group’s 2026 announcement. The group has not published a plant-by-plant breakdown of the new capacity or a timetable for individual production lines.

About US$700 million is planned for the Indian research-and-development center and a testing track, Hyundai Motor Group said in 2026. The build-out is designed to increase local engineering work and create an India-based technology base for vehicles and future mobility systems. The company has not stated how the R&D allocation will be divided between buildings, equipment, staffing and testing infrastructure.

Local suppliers and parts
Hyundai intends to develop Indian suppliers and increase parts localization. A larger local supplier network can reduce exposure to overseas logistics disruptions, support faster production changes and retain more automotive value in India. The announcement does not specify a localization percentage, supplier count or individual supplier commitments.
Charging and other future-mobility work
The plan extends beyond conventional vehicle assembly. Hyundai lists electric-vehicle charging, startup support and vehicle recycling among its future-mobility priorities. The broader program also includes work connected with financing and end-of-life vehicle systems, although no project-by-project budgets or launch dates have been released.

How Hyundai plans to execute the program
A dedicated Indian investment entity
Hyundai plans to establish a dedicated Indian investment entity to coordinate capital, business partners and suppliers. That structure should give the group a single mechanism for sequencing projects across manufacturing, research, components and mobility services. Hyundai has not yet disclosed the entity’s legal name, ownership structure or operating headquarters.
Employment and industrial development
Chung framed the investment as a long-term industrial commitment, saying it would create more employment opportunities and support India’s industrial development with partners and stakeholders.

Why India is a priority market
Large existing sales base
Hyundai and Kia sold 852,164 vehicles in India in the prior year, Yonhap News Agency reported in 2026. That combined result represented 18.7% of India’s passenger-vehicle market. The figures help explain why the group is committing capital across production, engineering and suppliers rather than treating India only as an assembly location.
Exports as well as domestic demand
Expanded factories and localized components are intended to support both Indian customers and exports. Hyundai has not disclosed how much of the planned output will be reserved for export markets, which countries will receive it or whether export volumes will be tied to specific models.
Tamil Nadu is Hyundai’s flagship EV hub
Hyundai Motor India has committed more than ₹26,000 crore for Tamil Nadu from 2023 through 2032, according to the company’s 2026 statement, and has named the state its flagship electric-vehicle hub. That state-level commitment is separate from the group’s newly announced India-wide program, so the public announcements should not be treated as identical accounting totals.
Tamil Nadu’s EV role links vehicle production with charging, suppliers and engineering. Hyundai has not published a complete list of EV models, battery projects, charging locations or annual output targets attached to the hub designation.
What is still unknown
- The distribution of the group commitment among Hyundai, Kia, manufacturing, R&D, suppliers and mobility services.
- The number of new factories, production lines or jobs.
- The timing and location of individual charging, recycling, startup and financing projects.
- The investment entity’s formal structure and how projects will be approved.
- The expected increase in vehicle output, exports and local-content share.
These details will determine how quickly the announcement translates into operating capacity. For now, the confirmed elements are the 2026–2032 funding window, the group-wide scope, the R&D and testing allocation, the existing manufacturing footprint, and Tamil Nadu’s designated EV role.
