Investors are weighing uncertainty about AI-related chip demand, potential Chinese competition and foreign selling—but the reported declines do not establish that AI investment has stopped or that the companies’ fundamentals have collapsed.
What happened to South Korea’s stock market?
The reported Tuesday decline followed a separate sell-off on Monday. Those are different sessions, with different reported figures: the Associated Press gave a Tuesday market snapshot, while SBS News reported Monday’s session and investor flows. The AP figure should not be treated as an independently verified official closing value.

| Session | Reported market move | Related figures and context |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026 | The Associated Press reported the KOSPI down 7.4% at 5,914.35, its lowest level since late July, in a report-time snapshot. | In the same report, Samsung Electronics fell 7.7% and SK Hynix fell 8.8%. |
| Monday, Oct. 12, 2026 | SBS News reported that the KOSPI fell 3.65%, its steepest daily drop in about a month. | SBS reported foreign investors net selling about 2 trillion won and institutions about 110 billion won, while individual investors bought nearly 1.5 trillion won. |
The KOSPI had crossed 9,000 and reached an all-time high in June, according to the AP report. The October move therefore comes amid a larger correction from that peak, as well as the immediate pressure captured in the two sessions above.
Why do chip stocks have such a large effect on the KOSPI?
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are among South Korea’s largest listed companies and major suppliers of memory chips used in the AI supply chain. The Business Times, citing Bloomberg reporting, said the two companies together represented more than half of KOSPI weighting. When both shares fall sharply, their size can magnify the index’s move; the impact is not a measure of how every Korean company is performing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This concentration also makes the market especially sensitive to changes in expectations for memory-chip demand, competition and foreign-investor appetite. It does not mean that the KOSPI consists only of chip companies, but it does mean that a small number of large semiconductor stocks can strongly influence its direction.
What is making AI investors nervous?
Questions about future AI spending and returns
Investors price shares partly on expectations about future sales and profits. If they become less confident that spending on AI infrastructure will translate into chip demand or attractive returns, semiconductor valuations can fall before companies report any corresponding drop in realized sales. The reporting on this episode documents investor concern and falling share prices; it does not show that AI investment has ended.

Possible competition from China
The AP reported that advances attributed to Chinese memory-chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) raised the possibility of stronger competition for Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. That is a concern investors are weighing, not proof of the scale, timing or commercial impact of CXMT’s challenge.

Spillover from U.S. chip shares and revenue concerns
SBS said the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.8% while South Korea’s market was closed for Hangeul Day, adding to pressure when Korean trading resumed. SBS also linked renewed investor unease to OpenAI reporting lower-than-expected revenue. It reported that the shortfall was later explained as a difference in accounting calculation methods, but that confidence did not promptly recover. These points describe SBS’s account of the episode, not an independently verified OpenAI revenue figure in this article.

How did trading flows add to the pressure?
Investor flows can amplify a move independently of company earnings or product demand. SBS reported foreign net selling on Oct. 12, alongside selling by institutions. It also said Samsung had completed an approximately 15 trillion won treasury-share buyback program on Oct. 6, while SK Hynix was nearing the end of its purchases. Buybacks can provide a source of share demand while they are underway; their completion or winding down may remove some support. These flow factors are distinct from evidence about long-term chip demand.
Does the sell-off mean South Korea’s fundamentals have weakened?
Not necessarily. In a July review, South Korea’s Ministry of Finance and Economy described the country’s fundamentals as solid, pointing to robust exports of key products including semiconductors, upward revisions to corporate earnings forecasts and a widening current-account surplus. The ministry also said a previous semiconductor-led market decline had been amplified largely by sentiment and unstable flows, amid concerns including intensifying Chinese memory-chip competition and major U.S. technology companies’ funding needs.

That was the government’s assessment of an earlier episode, not an official explanation for the Oct. 13 decline or a guarantee about October’s outlook. It is useful context for separating market volatility from confirmed changes in business performance, but it cannot settle what happens next.

What are investors comparing when they look beyond Korea?
The Business Times reported that some investors still considered Korean memory-chip shares attractive based on earnings, while others preferred Taiwan because of its broader exposure to the AI supply chain and stronger earnings outlook. These are attributed investor views, not a consensus or a recommendation. The comparison involves how much a market depends on a small number of memory-chip companies versus a wider set of AI hardware businesses, as well as expectations for earnings and sensitivity to foreign flows. The available reporting does not provide a matched valuation dataset for a numerical Korea-versus-Taiwan comparison.

What to watch next
- Memory demand and competition: Look for company results and guidance that show realized demand, rather than treating concern about AI expectations or CXMT as proof of lost sales.
- Foreign-investor flows: The Oct. 12 figures show how overseas selling coincided with the prior session’s decline; they should not be confused with Tuesday’s separate price snapshot.
- Index concentration: Moves in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix can have an outsized effect on the KOSPI because of their combined weight.
- Broader fundamentals: Export performance, earnings forecasts and the current account were among the indicators cited by the ministry in July, but that dated assessment needs to be distinguished from newer data.
