The return came six days after the government’s October 5 target. The trip was a completed trial—not evidence that a regular Arctic service has been approved or launched.
What the trial involved
The PanStar Acro, a 2,758-TEU-class container ship operated by Panstar Line, departed Busan on August 22, 2026. It was South Korea’s first container-ship trial voyage on the Northern Sea Route, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announcement reported by Korea.net.

The government said the ship carried 837 TEUs: 737 TEUs of goods, including chemical products, used cars and auto parts, and 100 TEUs of empty containers. The announced itinerary listed calls at Felixstowe on September 9, Rotterdam on September 11 and Gdansk on September 15, with a return to Busan planned for October 5.
The Ministry described the Arctic Ocean portion as approximately 6,400 km and estimated the voyage would take about 45 days. Those were figures in the original announcement, not final performance measurements.

When did the ship return, and how did the schedule change?
SBS reported that the PanStar Acro arrived in Busan on the morning of October 11, 2026, 50 days after leaving port. That was six days later than the announced October 5 return target. SBS also reported that the ship reached Felixstowe on September 12 and Rotterdam the following day—dates that differ from the government’s originally announced itinerary. The available reports do not reconcile the port-date differences.

What the government set out to measure
The Ministry said it would analyze the voyage’s distance, travel time, fuel consumption and operating costs to identify policy tasks for encouraging Arctic routes. The stated purpose was to collect operational data and assess the route; the announcement did not report final findings.

The sources available for this article provide no measured fuel-use or operating-cost results, no profitability assessment, and no head-to-head comparison with a conventional Asia-Europe route. They also do not establish seasonal reliability or environmental performance. Without those results, the trial’s completion alone cannot show whether the route is commercially viable.

No. South Korea had described a 2026 pilot voyage as a way to gain polar-voyage experience and data. In December 2025, Korea.net reported the government’s plan for a second-half Busan-to-Rotterdam container voyage. The PanStar Acro’s completed trip fulfills a trial purpose; the available reports do not say that a recurring service has been approved or started.

Whether the Northern Sea Route can support regular commercial schedules depends on evidence beyond a single completed voyage. Relevant measures include transit distance and time, fuel consumption, operating costs, schedule reliability and the port calls required. The government identified several of these as evaluation factors, but published comparative results are not included in the cited reports.
