South Kensington Tube station’s capacity upgrade is moving toward a design-and-build contract with Costain. TfL says design and procurement work are taking place in 2026, with a planned contract period beginning in October. The scheme is intended to bring step-free access to every platform and the museum subway, expand the ticket hall and reopen an eastbound platform. TfL has not confirmed a passenger opening date, and the £120 million figure in the original headline is not verified by the official sources cited here.
What is happening at South Kensington station in 2026?
On 22 September 2026, Transport for London (TfL) said it intended to award the station capacity upgrade’s design-and-build contract to Costain. The procurement notice describes two stages: detailed design, followed by construction. TfL says design and procurement work are taking place in 2026; the notice gives a planned contract period of 19 October 2026 to 18 June 2028. These are project and contract milestones, not a confirmed date for the station to reopen or for all passenger benefits to be available. TfL’s announcement and the procurement notice set out the current position.

“Work begins this year” needs qualification. March 2026 council minutes say work needed to begin in 2026 under planning timelines, but also record that TfL could not give a definitive completion timetable. The available dates support design, procurement and planned contract mobilisation in 2026; they do not establish when major on-site construction will start. TfL’s March update, the procurement notice and council minutes describe those separate milestones.

What does the station upgrade include?
- Step-free access: access from street level to all platforms and the museum subway.
- A larger ticket hall: intended to ease congestion.
- A reopened eastbound platform: the disused platform would be enlarged and used as a new eastbound platform for the Circle and District lines.
TfL describes the work as a capacity and passenger-access upgrade at the Grade II listed station. Its draft 2026 Business Plan reports 30 million customers a year at South Kensington station; that is an annual station-use figure, not a count of unique people or museum visitors. See TfL’s project announcement and the draft Business Plan station page.

Is the £120 million cost confirmed?
No. The official sources cited here do not confirm the £120 million amount or establish what it covers. The procurement notice concerns the station capacity upgrade’s design-and-build contract. A separate Around Station Development is planned alongside it, but the available sources do not provide an accounting boundary that would let the headline sum be assigned to the station contract, the wider redevelopment or an earlier estimate.
How is the station project funded?
TfL says the station scheme is funded within its Business Plan and supported by contributions from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) and the 1851 Commission. RBKC committee minutes record a £12 million council pledge. That pledge is one stated contribution; the sources do not establish that it represents the total project cost. TfL’s September announcement and the RBKC minutes provide the funding details.

How is the surrounding redevelopment different?
The Around Station Development is a separate project being delivered by TfL, its property company Places for London, and Native Land. It is planned to restore the historic shopping arcade and adjoining Thurloe Street retail units, provide 50 homes, and add a four-storey building with ground-floor food and beverage units and offices above. TfL said early implementation work for that development was expected later in 2026. These plans should not be treated as part of the station upgrade contract or its cost unless a source explicitly connects them. See TfL’s September announcement and its March redevelopment update.

When will South Kensington station be step-free?
There is no firm passenger opening date in the cited updates. A 23 July 2024 Mayor’s Question Time answer said planning permission required station works to commence by the end of 2026 and that completion by 2030 was possible subject to funding. That was a conditional estimate, not a confirmed opening commitment. In March 2026, RBKC minutes recorded that TfL could not provide a definitive completion timetable. The later update therefore does not confirm the earlier 2030 possibility. The 2024 answer and the March 2026 minutes give the relevant context.

Why the upgrade matters to passengers
TfL reports 30 million customers a year at the station, and the planned step-free route would connect street level with all platforms and the museum subway. The ticket hall expansion and restored eastbound platform address congestion and capacity as well as access. Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor of London for Transport, described the project as “important progress” toward improving the station and surrounding area, with step-free access intended to benefit commuters, Londoners and tourists. TfL’s announcement carries his statement.
