What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A silent soundbar is usually not a failed speaker. The most common causes are a mismatched input, the TV still using its built-in speakers, an HDMI cable in the wrong port, or an output format the bar cannot decode. Start by turning on both devices, clearing mute, raising volume, and selecting the soundbar input that matches the cable. Then follow the HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or Bluetooth instructions below. Menu names differ by television and soundbar model, so use your manuals when a label is different.
Diagnose the likely cause first

| What you observe | Most likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The bar powers on but shows no audio | The selected source does not match the connected cable, or the TV is sending sound to its own speakers. | Select HDMI ARC/eARC, Optical/OPT, or Bluetooth on the bar, then choose the bar as the TV’s audio output. |
| HDMI connection worked before but stopped | ARC/eARC handshake, HDMI-CEC, cable seating, or another HDMI device is interfering. | Reseat the cable, verify both ARC/eARC ports, restart both devices, and temporarily disconnect other HDMI equipment. |
| Optical cable is connected but silent | The bar is not on Optical/OPT, the TV output is not set to digital optical, or the selected audio format is unsupported. | Set the bar to Optical/OPT and the TV to Optical Digital or its equivalent external wired output. |
| Bluetooth from the TV is silent | The TV is paired to another device, the bar is not in Bluetooth mode, or pairing is incomplete. | Choose the soundbar as the TV’s Bluetooth output and put the bar in its Bluetooth input mode. |
| Phone playback works, but TV audio does not | The soundbar amplifier and speaker are probably working; concentrate on TV output settings or the wired TV connection. | Repeat the TV-specific branch for HDMI or optical and check the TV’s audio-output menu. |
| No sound from any source | A hardware fault, power problem, or internal protection state is possible. | Perform the isolation test in this guide, then contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. |
Do the 60-second basic checks
- Confirm power. Make sure the television and soundbar are actually on, not merely in standby. If the bar has a display or status LED, note whether it shows an input name or an error.
- Clear mute everywhere. Press mute on the TV remote and on the soundbar remote. Some televisions have a separate mute state for external speakers.
- Raise both volume controls. Increase the TV volume to a clearly audible level, then raise the bar’s volume. A bar can show a normal volume number while the TV output is muted.
- Match the source. Use the bar’s Input, Source, or Function button to select the connection in use: HDMI ARC/eARC, Optical/OPT, or Bluetooth. A bar set to Bluetooth will not play audio arriving through its optical input.
- Check the TV speaker destination. In the TV’s sound menu, choose the connected soundbar, external speaker, receiver, HDMI-ARC device, or equivalent option instead of Internal TV Speakers.
- Listen for any response. Play a TV channel or app with known audio and watch the bar’s display. If the display changes with the program but no sound is produced, continue with the connection-specific checks.
Labels vary by manufacturer and model. The names above describe functions, not a universal menu path.

HDMI ARC and eARC: the complete troubleshooting path
ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends the television’s sound back through an HDMI connection. eARC is the newer version with greater format capacity. The connection works only when the cable is in the specially labeled ports and the TV and bar are configured to use them.

1. Verify the two ARC/eARC ports
Follow the cable from end to end. One plug must be in the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. The other must be in the soundbar socket labeled HDMI ARC/eARC or HDMI TO TV (ARC/eARC). A regular HDMI input on the bar may accept video from a source but will not necessarily receive the TV’s return audio.
2. Select the external audio destination on the TV
Open the TV’s Sound or Audio menu and choose the connected soundbar, HDMI ARC, receiver, or external speaker setting. If the TV remains on Internal Speakers, the bar can be correctly wired and powered yet receive nothing.
3. Turn on HDMI-CEC
ARC control normally depends on HDMI-CEC, the feature that lets HDMI devices communicate. Manufacturers give CEC different names; for example, applicable televisions from Samsung call it Anynet+. Enable CEC on the TV and, if the soundbar has a corresponding control, enable it there as well. Exact menu locations and names differ by model.
4. Check eARC requirements
For eARC audio, both the TV and soundbar must support eARC. If the TV has an eARC setting, enable it when your model requires that step. A television with only ARC cannot provide eARC functions, and a bar without eARC cannot receive eARC-only formats. If you are unsure, set the devices to their common ARC capability and test with a supported format.
5. Choose the bar’s ARC source
Use the soundbar’s source control to select its TV ARC, HDMI ARC, or equivalent input. Some models display a sequence such as D.IN and then TV ARC while they establish a link. That sequence is model-specific; do not assume it applies to another brand or model.

6. Reseat and restart in a clean order
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and inspect the plugs for looseness or visible damage.
- Reconnect the cable firmly to the two labeled ARC/eARC ports.
- Disconnect other HDMI devices temporarily, including a set-top box, game console, or receiver.
- Turn on the soundbar, then the TV, and test a built-in TV app or channel.
Removing other devices simplifies the HDMI handshake. Reconnect them one at a time after TV-to-bar sound returns so you can identify an interfering device.
7. Test a compatible audio format
A connection can be active while the bar remains silent if the TV sends a format the bar cannot decode. Consult both manuals and temporarily choose a format they share. Sony’s support guidance identifies PCM as a troubleshooting option on applicable setups; PCM is not a universal best setting, so treat it as a diagnostic test rather than a blanket recommendation. Restore a preferred bitstream or automatic mode after compatibility is confirmed.
8. Decide whether the HDMI cable is at fault
Replace the cable only after checking the port labels, source selection, output settings, CEC, and seating. Manufacturer guidance recommends a replacement when the existing cable is suspected to be defective; a new cable cannot correct a TV set to Internal Speakers or a bar on the wrong input. Use a cable appropriate for the ARC/eARC features your equipment supports.
Optical connection: settings and checks
Optical is a separate digital path and can be a useful alternative when ARC is unreliable, provided both devices have compatible optical ports. It does not automatically preserve every audio format or HDMI control feature, so check the manuals before changing connections.
- Connect the correct sockets. Plug the TV’s optical output into the soundbar’s optical input. Remove protective caps from a new cable if present and push both ends fully home; an optical plug can look connected while its light path is not seated.
- Select Optical on the bar. Press Input, Source, or Function until the display reads Optical, OPT, or the model’s equivalent.
- Choose the TV’s digital output. In the TV sound menu, select Optical Digital, Digital Audio Out, or the corresponding external wired-speaker option. Do not leave the TV on Internal Speakers.
- Check output format support. If the bar remains silent, review both manuals and select a format the bar accepts. The available choices and labels vary by television.
- Test a known source. Use a built-in TV app or channel, then try another app. If only one source is silent, its audio track or format may differ from the others.
Optical carries audio only. Volume control, power synchronization, and other conveniences that travel over HDMI-CEC may not work in the same way, so you may need the soundbar remote.

Bluetooth: pairing, source mode, and isolation
Make the TV send audio to the bar
Open the TV’s Bluetooth audio-device list and select the soundbar as the active output. Pairing alone does not guarantee that the TV is currently routing sound there. On the bar, select its Bluetooth input mode; a bar left on HDMI or Optical will ignore Bluetooth playback.
Pair again when the connection is stale
If the TV reports a connection but no sound, remove the bar from the TV’s saved Bluetooth devices, place the bar in pairing mode, and pair it again according to both manuals. Turn off nearby devices that may automatically reconnect to the bar while you test.
Use a phone or tablet as a separate test source
Pair a phone or tablet with the soundbar and play a familiar track. If the bar plays normally from the mobile device, its speakers and amplifier are likely functioning; focus on the TV’s Bluetooth output or its wired connection. If the bar is silent from the phone as well, continue with the power and service checks rather than repeatedly changing TV menus.
Use isolation tests instead of guessing
A controlled test tells you which side of the setup is failing.
Test the bar with another source
- Choose one alternative source, such as a phone over Bluetooth or another supported input.
- Set the bar to that source and play audio at a moderate volume.
- Record the result: sound, intermittent sound, or silence.
- Sound works from the alternate source: troubleshoot the TV output setting, ARC/optical cable, port, or format.
- Silence continues on the alternate source: check power and mute once more, then seek manufacturer support or authorized service.
Simplify an HDMI system
For ARC/eARC problems, disconnect every HDMI device except the TV and soundbar. Use a built-in TV app so the source is inside the television. If that works, reconnect the set-top box, console, and other equipment one at a time. The device connected immediately before the failure deserves special attention, but do not assume it is defective until its settings and cable are checked.

Check for intermittent behavior
If sound cuts in and out when a plug moves, the cable or port may be loose. If it fails only after changing apps or waking the TV, the issue is more consistent with an HDMI handshake or output-format change. Note the exact trigger before contacting support; it helps the technician reproduce the fault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.TV audio settings that commonly block a soundbar
- Speaker destination: choose the external soundbar, receiver, HDMI ARC/eARC, or optical output instead of TV speakers.
- Digital audio format: use a format supported by both devices. Automatic or passthrough modes can expose incompatibilities; a supported PCM test can help identify one on applicable equipment.
- eARC mode: enable the TV’s eARC option only when both devices support eARC and the model requires it.
- CEC control: enable HDMI-CEC for ARC operation and look for the manufacturer’s name for that feature.
- Per-app or per-input audio: some televisions remember separate output behavior for built-in apps, HDMI inputs, and antenna channels. Test more than one source.
- Headphone or analog priority: if headphones or another audio accessory is connected, the TV may divert sound away from HDMI or optical.
Because menus differ substantially, use the manual for your exact model when a setting is missing or named differently. Manufacturer support pages dated August 19, 2026 (LG), September 1, 2026 (Samsung Canada), and August 6, 2025 (Samsung India) all emphasize model-dependent labels and output selection.
When an alternative optical connection makes sense
Optical can bypass an HDMI-CEC or ARC handshake, making it useful for a TV and bar that both have optical ports but do not cooperate over ARC. It is not a guaranteed upgrade: it may limit supported formats and will not provide every HDMI control function. Confirm port availability and format support in both manuals before buying a cable. If your equipment lacks compatible optical sockets, use the connection it supports rather than forcing an adapter into the troubleshooting chain.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Contact the soundbar manufacturer or an authorized service provider when the bar remains silent after a clean alternate-source test, or when it repeatedly shuts down, displays a persistent fault code, smells overheated, or shows physical damage. Do not open the bar or attempt internal repairs unless the manufacturer specifically directs a qualified technician.

- Leave the bar on the input used by the TV, and teach household members which source button selects it.
- Avoid sharply bending optical cables and avoid pulling any cable by its wire.
- After adding a console or set-top box, test TV-to-bar audio before connecting the next device.
- Keep the TV and soundbar manuals accessible; menu labels and eARC behavior are model-specific.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the soundbar show that it is on but produce no sound?
Power only confirms that the bar is operating. It can still be listening to the wrong input, muted, or waiting for the TV to route audio to an external speaker. Match the bar’s source to the cable and change the TV’s speaker destination.
Can any HDMI port carry sound back to a soundbar?
No. ARC/eARC return audio requires the TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s labeled ARC/eARC or HDMI TO TV port. A regular HDMI input may not accept return audio.
Is buying a new HDMI cable the first fix?
No. First verify the two ARC/eARC ports, source selection, TV output, CEC, cable seating, and a clean restart. Replace the cable when it is suspected to be defective, not as a substitute for correcting settings or compatibility.
What does phone Bluetooth playback prove?
Successful phone playback shows that the bar can receive at least one source and produce sound. It directs your attention to the TV’s output setting or its HDMI/optical path. Failure from the phone and TV points toward the bar, power, or a broader hardware problem.
Why might PCM help over HDMI?
PCM can be a format both devices understand when a bitstream or passthrough format is incompatible. It is a diagnostic option identified by Sony for applicable setups, not a universal setting; check the manuals and restore the preferred supported format afterward.
