Soulslike vs Action RPG: What’s the Difference and Which Should You Play?

Soulslike is a focused design approach; action RPG is the broader category. Both usually combine real-time combat with character growth, but a Soulslike ties combat, exploration, checkpoints, death, recovery and learning into one high-consequence loop. An action RPG may be fast or deliberate, forgiving or punishing, linear or open-world, and its progression can matter more than execution. Elden Ring sits between the labels: it is officially described as an action RPG, yet its combat and failure loop are unmistakably Soulslike.

What is an action RPG?

An action RPG combines the immediate control of an action game with the long-term development of a role-playing game. You normally attack, defend and move in real time, while also improving a character through levels, attributes, equipment, skills, abilities, builds or related progression systems.

The category is intentionally broad. One action RPG can emphasize fast combos and constant ability use; another can make every attack a deliberate commitment. Some offer selectable difficulty, generous checkpoints and frequent saves. Others expect you to repeat dangerous encounters until you understand them. Open worlds, linear stages, party systems, loot tables, dialogue choices and cinematic quests can all fit inside the action-RPG umbrella.

That breadth is why “action RPG” does not tell you exactly how a game feels to play. It identifies the combination of real-time action and role-playing progression, not a single difficulty level, camera style or story format.

What makes a game a Soulslike?

“Soulslike” is a comparative design label, not an official genre checklist. It describes a game that meaningfully adopts the design language popularized by FromSoftware’s Souls games. The most useful test is whether several systems reinforce the same loop:

  • You enter a dangerous area whose enemies and geography must be read rather than simply cleared.
  • Combat rewards spacing, timing, positioning and resource management over uninterrupted button pressing.
  • Checkpoints divide the route and often let you recover, restock or improve your character.
  • Death has a consequence, such as risking an unspent resource or requiring a return trip.
  • Each attempt provides information about enemy patterns, traps, routes or your own mistakes.
  • Progress comes from both character development and improved player knowledge.

A game does not need every familiar feature to qualify. It can replace a particular currency, use a different checkpoint name or add an unusually helpful difficulty option. The label is useful when it predicts the play loop, not when it is used to enforce a perfect boundary.

Soulslike and action RPG compared

Design axis Soulslike tendency Broad action-RPG possibility
Combat rhythm Deliberate attacks, commitment, spacing, dodge or block timing and resource management Anything from deliberate exchanges to rapid attacks, animation cancelling, crowd control or button-driven offense
Failure Death is part of the learning loop and can create a recovery risk or route back to the fight Failure may be lighter, checkpoints more frequent or progression largely protected
Exploration Dangerous routes, shortcuts, hidden spaces and checkpoints commonly reinforce one another May use linear stages, open worlds, quest hubs or dungeons without a Souls-style recovery loop
Progression Builds and equipment matter, while knowledge and execution remain equally central Stats, loot, skill trees, story choices or party composition may carry more of the power curve
Difficulty Usually asks you to observe, adapt and repeat until you gain mastery May offer selectable difficulty, stronger safety nets or challenge driven more by build and gear
Story delivery Often indirect, environmental or fragmentary Frequently explicit through quests, dialogue and cutscenes, although exceptions are common

These are tendencies, not laws. Modern games mix systems freely. A title can have Soulslike combat but a conventional quest structure, or an action-RPG progression system with only a few Soulslike ideas. Ask what the game repeatedly asks you to do, rather than relying on its store category.

How the Soulslike loop works

Combat is a commitment system

In a Soulslike, an attack is usually more than a command to subtract health. Starting a swing, spell, heal or dodge commits time and positioning. If you act at the wrong moment, the enemy can interrupt you before the animation finishes. The resulting tension comes from deciding whether an opening is safe, not from reacting to every threat with unlimited options.

Stamina commonly limits this decision-making. The official Elden Ring starter guide explains: “When it reaches zero, you won’t be able to perform any further actions that consume stamina.” Stamina regenerates automatically and is not consumed outside combat. In practice, you must leave enough energy to block, dodge or retreat after attacking. A large damage number is less valuable if the swing leaves you unable to escape.

Enemy reading replaces constant aggression

Enemies communicate through animation, sound, distance and recovery windows. You learn which movement signals a delayed strike, how far a lunge reaches, when a combo ends and whether a healing attempt will be punished. The goal is not to memorize every frame before playing; it is to observe, test a response and adjust on the next attempt.

This is why a familiar enemy can become easier without your character gaining a level. You recognize its range, stop dodging too early, wait through a feint or attack only after the recovery animation. The knowledge is yours, so it remains useful even when equipment or statistics change.

Checkpoints shape the route

Checkpoints do more than save progress. They establish a rhythm between risk and relief. Resting may restore health and resources, but it can also reset ordinary enemies, forcing you to decide whether to fight, sneak past or take a known shortcut. A well-placed checkpoint teaches the structure of the area: a locked door, elevator or bridge may eventually connect a difficult section back to safety.

Because the route matters, exploration has practical value. A hidden room can contain equipment, a shortcut can remove several fights from future attempts and an alternate path can lead to a more manageable encounter. Mapping the environment is part of becoming stronger.

Death provides information and creates a recovery decision

Death is not simply a restart screen. Many Soulslike designs make you consider what was lost, where it can be recovered and whether the return trip is worth the risk. You may choose to retrieve an unspent resource, spend what you have before trying again or change your route to avoid unnecessary danger.

Hidetaka Miyazaki has described the intention this way: “We understand that Souls-like games are regularly associated with impossible levels of difficulty with high barriers to entry. But we try to design the games to make the cycle of repeatedly trying to overcome these challenges enjoyable in itself.” The important idea is the cycle. A failed attempt should reveal a pattern, a safer route, a better distance or a mistake you can correct.

Builds help, but they do not replace execution

Levels, weapons, armor, spells and skills can change how you approach a fight. A shield may let you block a pattern that another character dodges; a ranged option may create space; a status effect may reward repeated light attacks. This flexibility gives you ways to solve a problem without requiring one “correct” build.

However, a stronger build does not automatically remove the need to read attacks. You still need to recognize when an enemy is safe to approach, manage stamina and avoid spending a long animation in front of an incoming strike. In a Soulslike, player knowledge and character power usually work together.

Is every difficult action RPG a Soulslike?

No. Difficulty alone is not the definition. A hard action game may rely on fast reflexes, dense enemy groups, strict time limits, elaborate combos or a high damage curve while providing generous resets and no meaningful recovery risk. That can be demanding without sharing the Soulslike loop.

Conversely, a Soulslike can make entry easier without losing its identity. Optional summons, flexible builds, open-world detours, stealth, mounted travel or a nearby checkpoint can soften a particular obstacle. The question is what the challenge asks you to learn and how defeat connects to progression, not whether the game has an “easy” setting or a reputation for being hard.

Where Elden Ring fits

Elden Ring is officially presented as a refined action RPG, and it includes the broad systems that label implies: character creation, weapons, magical abilities, skills, a large connected world, stealth, summons and online allies. Its combat still asks you to read an enemy and time a dodge, block or parry. That combination makes it a bridge between a broad action RPG and a traditional Soulslike.

Why its open world changes the pressure

In a more linear Soulslike, a difficult boss can block the only obvious route forward. Elden Ring often lets you leave. You can ride elsewhere, explore a cave, find an upgrade, change your equipment, approach from another direction or return when your character and your understanding have improved. This does not make every fight easy; it gives you more control over when to face it.

Tools that expand your options

Bandai Namco’s beginner guidance emphasizes avoiding enemies that are too strong, choosing your own route, using Torrent, applying stealth and exploiting the environment. You can also call on summons or other players. These tools are not an options-menu difficulty selector, but they change the problem you are solving. Instead of proving that one weapon and one dodge pattern work, you can choose a different approach.

What remains Soulslike

The core expectations remain: attacks have commitment, stamina and positioning matter, bosses demand observation, checkpoints structure exploration and defeat can make you reconsider how you spend resources. The open world adds freedom around that loop rather than replacing it. For many newcomers, that makes Elden Ring a gentler introduction than a strictly linear entry while preserving the distinctive combat philosophy.

Which should you play?

If you want to… Start with… Why
Learn enemy patterns and improve through repetition A focused Soulslike The route, checkpoints and combat are built around repeated attempts and mastery
Try Soulslike fundamentals with room to leave a difficult fight Elden Ring Open-world routing, multiple builds, stealth, summons and mounted travel provide alternatives
Experience the foundational, tighter formula Dark Souls: Remastered The original trilogy is identified by Bandai Namco as foundational to this design philosophy
Prioritize selectable difficulty and frequent safety nets A broader action RPG The wider category is more likely to separate challenge from repeated route recovery
Make story quests, party composition or explicit dialogue your priority A story-forward action RPG Those structures are common in the umbrella genre but are not required by Soulslike design

Choose a Soulslike first if…

  • You enjoy studying patterns and feeling a clear improvement from one attempt to the next.
  • You want each attack, dodge, heal or parry to carry a meaningful cost.
  • You like discovering shortcuts, hidden routes and environmental clues.
  • You want execution and decision-making to matter as much as your character level.
  • You are willing to repeat a route while testing a new strategy.

Choose a broader action RPG first if…

  • You prefer faster, more forgiving combat or a selectable difficulty.
  • You want the story delivered mainly through quests, dialogue and cutscenes.
  • You dislike repeating a route after defeat.
  • You want loot, levels, skill trees or party composition to provide a larger safety net.
  • You prefer predictable progression while experimenting with builds.

A practical beginner path

Start with the right expectation

Do not treat the first major obstacle as a reflex exam that must be passed immediately. Spend an attempt learning its range, attack order and recovery windows. If you die, identify one specific adjustment for the next try: stay farther away, stop attacking after two hits, delay your dodge or preserve stamina for the escape.

Use every available route

When a fight feels disproportionate, look for another path before assuming you are under-skilled. In Elden Ring, that can mean riding away, exploring a different region, using stealth, finding a checkpoint or returning with a new weapon or spell. Choosing not to fight is a strategic decision, not a failure to engage with the game.

Test a build before committing

Try the weapons, magical abilities and skills you find. A build should solve the problems you actually encounter: reach for enemies that punish close contact, a shield for attacks you struggle to dodge, or ranged pressure when approaching is unsafe. Avoid spending every resource on damage if the real issue is survivability or stamina management.

Accept assistance deliberately

Summons and online allies can reduce the pressure on a boss and let you observe patterns from a safer angle. Using them does not invalidate the game’s systems; it changes the encounter’s demands. If you later want a stricter test, you can attempt the same fight alone.

Common misconceptions

“Souls games are just action RPGs.”

They are action RPGs in the broad mechanical sense, but that description omits the connected loop that defines their feel. Real-time combat and character growth explain the category; commitment, checkpoints, recovery risk and learning explain the Soulslike identity.

“A Soulslike must be brutally difficult.”

Difficulty is a common result of the design, not its sole requirement. A game can provide summons, alternate routes or generous checkpoints while still making observation and deliberate decisions central.

“You must use one correct build.”

Build experimentation is part of the appeal. Different weapons, magical abilities and skills can change the timing and distance of an encounter. A flexible game may let you solve the same problem through defense, mobility, range, status effects or support.

“Story has to be obscure.”

Indirect and environmental storytelling are common in Soulslikes, but they are tendencies rather than rules. A game can retain the combat and failure loop while presenting clearer dialogue or more conventional quests.

The decision in one sentence

Choose a Soulslike when you want high-consequence combat, route knowledge and the satisfaction of mastery through repetition; choose a broader action RPG when you want more freedom in difficulty, progression, story structure or recovery from failure. If you want both, Elden Ring is the clearest bridge: it preserves the Soulslike foundation while letting you postpone fights, change builds, use stealth, summon help and explore at your own pace.
