Sony’s redesigned, smaller PS5—often called the PS5 Slim—keeps the same published core processing platform, adds a 1TB SSD to both editions, and gives the Digital Edition an upgrade path to an attachable disc drive. The redesign was announced on October 10, 2023; its launch prices and rollout dates are historical, so check current retailers for today’s price and stock.
What changed in the redesigned PS5?
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the redesign on October 10, 2023. Sony said the new console’s volume was reduced by more than 30%, while weight fell by 18% and 24% compared with the previous models. It retains the PS5’s published CPU and GPU platform, but moves to a 1TB SSD in both editions. Sony’s announcement describes the smaller chassis and hardware changes.

The redesigned shell uses four separate cover panels: the upper panels have a glossy finish and the lower panels are matte. The new Digital Edition can also take an optional Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, so owners can add physical-disc support later rather than choosing it at purchase.

Can you add a disc drive to the Digital Edition?
Yes. The redesigned Digital Edition supports a separately sold attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. That provides an upgrade route for physical PS5 game discs and disc playback without buying the disc-equipped console at the outset. The drive is an added purchase, however, so compare the combined cost of the Digital Edition and drive with the disc model before choosing.
Sony’s October 2023 U.S. recommended retail prices were $449.99 for the Digital Edition and $79.99 for the attachable drive, or $529.98 combined before tax—$30 more than the announced $499.99 price of the disc model. These are historical U.S. launch figures, not a statement of current retail pricing. Sony announced the drive at €119.99 in Europe, £99.99 in the U.K., and ¥11,980 in Japan; regional pricing and availability can change.

Redesigned console covers were also announced as separate accessories, including matte black and Deep Earth Collection colors—Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver—with U.S. prices starting at $54.99.
