Under incoming CEO Kazuo Hirai, Sony said it planned to eliminate about 10,000 positions worldwide, roughly 6% of its workforce, and expected nearly $1 billion in restructuring costs. The plan was part of the “One Sony” strategy to simplify the company and focus on businesses with better growth prospects.
What Sony announced in 2012
Sony announced plans for approximately 10,000 job reductions worldwide and nearly $1 billion in restructuring costs. Those were planned reductions, not a claim that every affected employee would be dismissed at once. Timing and implementation could vary by country and business. Contemporary coverage put the cuts at about 6% of Sony’s workforce. IndustryWeek’s report on the plan and VentureBeat’s coverage of the “One Sony” effort date the story to 2012.

The nearly $1 billion was an expected cost for the broader restructuring. The available reporting does not establish that the entire amount was severance paid to workers, nor does it provide a complete breakdown across employee costs, business changes, facilities, or other reorganization expenses. It is more accurate to say Sony expected to spend nearly $1 billion on restructuring than to call it a $1 billion severance bill.
Why Sony wanted to restructure
Sony was under pressure in consumer electronics, particularly televisions and other hardware businesses where competition was intense, prices were falling, and profitability was weak. Contemporary reporting also cited soft demand, the strong yen—which made Japanese exports less competitive—and supply-chain disruption connected to the 2011 Thailand floods. The company was trying to respond to years of losses and to move resources toward businesses it considered more promising. IndustryWeek’s account of the announcement describes these pressures.

What “One Sony” was meant to change
“One Sony” was a corporate strategy, not a product or legal entity. Its purpose was to reduce silos and duplication, simplify decision-making, and coordinate Sony’s electronics, games, entertainment, and network businesses more closely. Hirai’s plan aimed to concentrate investment on areas with stronger prospects, including:
- PlayStation, online games, and network services;
- emerging markets;
- medical equipment; and
- other businesses Sony viewed as having greater growth potential than its struggling television and electronics operations.
These were strategic priorities, not evidence that every area received equal investment or that the plan quickly fixed all of Sony’s problems.

How the turnaround played out
The result was mixed across Sony’s businesses. In May 2017, CEO Kazuo Hirai said the company’s major turnaround was substantially complete, reflecting a significant improvement in Sony’s overall position. But that did not mean every division had recovered: Sony Pictures remained a concern. Business Standard’s report on Hirai’s 2017 assessment notes the continuing film-business challenges. A company can improve its overall performance while still having individual businesses that struggle.
The separate $962 million Sony Pictures charge
Sony’s later film-unit figure is easy to confuse with the 2012 restructuring budget. In 2016, Sony recorded an approximately $962 million goodwill impairment against Sony Pictures’ film business. That was a non-cash accounting write-down, not a $962 million payment for layoffs and not the cost of the 2012 “One Sony” plan. TheWrap’s report on the impairment describes the charge.

How the 2012 plan differs from later Sony job cuts
“Sony” can mean the wider Sony Group or a particular business such as Sony Pictures or Sony Interactive Entertainment. Later job reductions belong to different entities and dates; they should not be folded into the 2012 company-wide plan without evidence that Sony linked them.

| April 2012 | Sony’s company-wide restructuring | Planned reductions of about 10,000 positions—roughly 6% of the workforce—and expected restructuring costs of nearly $1 billion. IndustryWeek |
| 2016 | Sony Pictures film-business impairment | An approximately $962 million non-cash goodwill write-down, not a layoff-program budget. TheWrap |
| February 2024 | Sony Interactive Entertainment | The company announced plans to cut approximately 900 employees, about 8% of its global workforce. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s announcement |
| April 2026 | Sony Pictures | Variety reported planned cuts numbering in the hundreds across film, television, and corporate divisions. This was a studio restructuring, not evidence of a new Sony Group-wide $1 billion program. Variety’s report |
| June 25, 2026 | PlayStation Studios | Sony Interactive Entertainment published an update amid further studio restructuring coverage. The update does not establish a consolidated, nearly $1 billion Sony-wide restructuring budget. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s update |
Sony’s 2026 investor-relations archive and investor-relations materials do not establish a new company-wide layoff program matching the 2012 headline. That is a statement about what those current materials establish, not proof that Sony or its subsidiaries have made no other staffing changes.
