Sony ZV-1 II Review: What Its Wide Lens Gets Right—and What It Doesn’t

The Sony ZV-1 II is a pocketable, fixed-lens camera built around a genuinely wide 18–50 mm-equivalent zoom, a 1.0-type sensor and features aimed at video creators. That wide view makes it easier to film yourself or a small group at arm’s length; the trade-offs are limited reach, modest battery estimates and no built-in stabilization, a drawback noted by TechRadar’s point-and-shoot buying guide. Sony’s specifications make it a compelling option for casual vlogging, but they do not establish that it is the best choice for every kind of video.

What is the Sony ZV-1 II?

It is a compact camera with a permanently attached zoom lens, rather than an interchangeable-lens system. Sony specifies a 1.0-type Exmor RS CMOS sensor with approximately 20.1 effective megapixels and a lens covering 18–50 mm in 35 mm-equivalent terms at f/1.8–4.0. The focal-length and aperture figures come from Sony’s official specifications.

The camera’s design priorities are easy self-framing, creator-oriented video functions and compact carry weight. With battery and memory card installed, Sony lists its weight at approximately 292 g. The camera’s fixed lens keeps the setup simple, but also means you cannot swap in a longer or different lens when your shooting needs change.

Is the 18–50 mm lens useful for vlogging?

The 18 mm-equivalent wide end is the ZV-1 II’s main practical advantage for people filming themselves. It gives more room for the subject and background in an arm’s-length shot, which can help with group selfies or filming in a tight interior. Sony emphasized those use cases in its launch announcement.

  • Ultra-wide 18-50mm1 zoom lens gets it all in the frame
  • Large 1.0-type sensor for professional results even in low-light
  • Wide aperture F1.8-4.0 lens for beautifully defocused backgrounds
  • Clear audio with directional 3-Capsule mic and wind screen accessory
  • Stay in focus with Real-time autofocus tracking and Eye-AF

The other end of the zoom range is only 50 mm equivalent. That is useful for tighter framing, but it is not a long telephoto reach: a distant performer, wildlife or action across a field may remain small in the frame. Consider what you expect to film before treating the wide-angle benefit as an all-purpose lens.

What video and creator features does it offer?

Sony lists 4K XAVC S recording at 29.97p, 25p and 23.98p. Full HD recording modes include frame rates up to 119.88p. Available frame rates and features depend on the selected recording mode; Sony’s ZV-1M2 Help Guide provides the mode-specific details.

Creator-oriented options include Product Showcase Setting, Face Priority AE, Real-time Eye AF, Cinematic Vlog Setting and a vari-angle touch LCD. These features are intended to simplify common tasks such as keeping a face in focus, adjusting exposure for a face, showing an object to the camera or composing a shot with the screen turned toward the operator. They are useful workflow aids, not a substitute for choosing the right framing, lighting and recording mode.

How good is the built-in audio setup?

The camera has a three-capsule microphone with directional modes, and Sony includes a wind screen and adapter. For straightforward vlogging, that gives you an onboard audio option without requiring a separate microphone straight away.

What are the biggest limitations?

No built-in stabilization

TechRadar’s point-and-shoot buying guide flags the lack of built-in stabilization as a consideration. That matters most when you want smooth-looking footage while walking or moving the camera by hand. For static or carefully supported shots, it may be less important; for mobile shooting, account for it in your workflow rather than assuming the camera will steady every clip.

Limited zoom reach

The lens stops at 50 mm equivalent, so the camera is better suited to nearby subjects and self-framing than to distant subjects that benefit from substantial zoom. Because the lens is fixed, you cannot solve that limitation by attaching a telephoto lens later.

Battery estimates require planning

Sony’s CIPA-standard figures are approximately 290 still shots, 75 minutes of continuous movie recording or 45 minutes of actual movie recording using the LCD. These are different measures, not a promise that every filming session will last that long; real endurance varies with use. The supplied battery is an NP-BX1, and a spare may be practical for longer recording days. Sony’s figures and included-accessory details are in its specifications.

How much does the Sony ZV-1 II cost?

Prices vary by market and date. On October 7, 2026, Sony’s U.S. product listing showed model ZV-1M2/B at $949.99, discounted from $999.99; that is a dated U.S.-specific listing, not a guaranteed current or recurring price. Check Sony’s U.S. product page for current price and availability in that market.

Sony Europe estimated a €1,000 retail price at launch in 2023. That historical European estimate is not a current price quote. Sony’s original launch announcement also positioned the wider lens as a key change from the original ZV-1.

Who should consider the ZV-1 II?

  • Consider it if you want a compact, self-contained camera and prioritize a wide view for talking-to-camera clips, group shots or tight spaces.
  • Look carefully at the trade-offs if you often film while walking, need long reach for distant subjects or record for extended periods away from charging.
  • It may not fit your needs if interchangeable lenses are important to your work; this is a fixed-lens compact, not a system camera.

Which accessories are worth considering?

Start with the camera itself and add equipment only to solve a real need. The supplied NP-BX1 battery covers the basic setup; a spare is an optional convenience for longer sessions. Sony’s Help Guide lists SD cards as supported recording media, but confirm that a particular card is suitable for the recording mode you plan to use. An external microphone is another optional choice if your sound requirements call for one.
