The Sony XR-65X90L is a 2023 65-inch 4K full-array LED TV that does its best work with a central viewing seat, indirect room light, and a mix of streaming, broadcast TV, and console gaming. Its strengths are vivid color, strong brightness, and capable image processing; its main compromises are reflections, off-angle viewing, blooming in some dark scenes, and motion and input-response limits for competitive gaming.
What the Sony XR-65X90L is
Sony lists the XR-65X90L as a 65-inch LCD television with a 64.5-inch measured diagonal, 3840 × 2160 resolution, direct Full Array LED backlighting, local dimming, and a 120 Hz panel. It runs Google TV and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG. See Sony’s US specifications for the full model details.

RTINGS says it bought and tested the 65-inch model. Its findings point to a TV best suited to viewers who value processing and a bright, colorful picture more than wide-angle uniformity, strong reflection handling, or top-tier competitive gaming response. The review’s results are specific to its tested unit and conditions, not a guarantee that every room or source will look identical.

Bright-room TV and streaming
RTINGS reports strong SDR brightness and good HDR brightness. It also found vivid, accurate color and very good upscaling and cleanup of low-quality content. That combination makes the X90L a particularly sensible fit for broadcast TV, compressed streams, and other sources that benefit from image processing.
#1 Best Overall

- More streaming, less searching: With personalized picks right on your Home Screen, quick access to the sports and entertainment you watch most, and fast and easy search in one place—the days of endless scrolling are over.
There is an important room caveat: the set struggles with direct reflections. It is easier to recommend in a room with indirect ambient light than in a setup where a bright window or lamp faces the screen. Brightness alone does not make reflections disappear.
Dark scenes, blooming, and seating position
RTINGS reports raised blacks in scenes that combine dark areas with bright elements, as well as visible blooming around subtitles in some circumstances. If you often watch films with subtitles in a dark room, those effects may be more noticeable than they would be during bright daytime viewing.
The image also degrades at aggressive viewing angles. A seat near the center of the screen is a better match than a wide seating arrangement where people watch from far to either side. These contrast and angle limitations matter more when comparing the X90L with a TV chosen primarily for dark-room performance or group viewing.

Gaming: 4K/120Hz is available, but only on two HDMI inputs
Sony lists four HDMI inputs, with 4K/120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) supported on HDMI inputs 3 and 4. The TV also supports eARC/ARC; RTINGS notes that one of the two HDMI 2.1-capable inputs is also the eARC port. Plan connections around that limited set of high-bandwidth inputs if you have multiple consoles, a PC, or an eARC sound system. The Sony specifications page lists the supported signals and connections.

- 4K UltraHD Resolution: Experience incredible detail with 4X resolution of 1080p Full HD TVs.
- QLED: Quantum Dot Technology enhances brightness and color for vibrant, lifelike picture quality.
- Direct LED Backlight: Enjoy uniform brightness and rich contrast for a vibrant, immersive viewing experience.
- High Dynamic Range (HDR) with Dolby Vision: Enjoy enhanced contrast, accurate colors and fine details utilizing all the most advanced HDR formats.
- Dolby Atmos Audio: Advanced spatial audio processing can be found in movies, TV shows, and video games.
These input features do not mean that streaming video itself becomes 120 frames per second. The 4K/120Hz specification concerns supported signals from connected devices; the frame rate of a streaming programme depends on the content and service. A forum user raised the same distinction in a discussion about the model: Sony X90L 120Hz streaming question.
RTINGS calls the gaming experience decent, but reports higher input lag than similar models and slow pixel transitions that can blur fast motion. That makes the TV capable for general console play, while players who prioritize rapid response and motion clarity should compare alternatives before buying. RTINGS’ comparisons with newer Mini LED TVs found those reviewed alternatives could offer stronger gaming performance, deeper blacks, and more brightness, while the Sony retained advantages in processing and accuracy; the result depends on the particular models being compared.

Availability and software support
Sony’s US store currently marks the model “Item no longer available.” That status applies to Sony’s own US store page and does not establish whether another retailer has stock. Check live retailer availability and pricing before deciding whether the X90L is a good value. Sony’s US product page shows its current store status.
Sony’s US support page lists North American firmware version 6.8224 dated July 14, 2026. Support notices and service availability can vary by region, so owners should consult the support page for their location rather than assume a US notice applies elsewhere. Sony’s XR-65X90L support page is the place to check applicable updates.
Who should consider the XR-65X90L?
- A good fit: Viewers who sit near the center, watch in indirect ambient light, and want strong processing for a mix of streaming, broadcast, and other lower-quality sources.
- Think carefully: Buyers who regularly watch in a dark room with subtitles, sit across a wide sofa, or have a window or lamp directly opposite the screen.
- Compare alternatives: Competitive players who are especially sensitive to input lag and fast-motion blur, or buyers prioritizing black levels and gaming performance over image processing.
For comparisons, look beyond the “120 Hz” label: check which HDMI inputs support 4K/120Hz and VRR, how many devices need those ports, the position of eARC, and measured input and motion performance. Also weigh reflection handling, viewing angles, and dark-scene blooming against the kinds of content and room where you will use the TV.
