Sony Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 5 IV are now supported by LineageOS 23.0, bringing an actively maintained custom ROM track to two popular Xperia handsets. LineageOS 23.0 is based on Android 14, so the change isn’t just cosmetic—expect updates to security behavior, app compatibility, and device services.
If you want the benefits (longer software life, more control, fewer vendor lock-ins) you’ll still need to do the hard parts correctly: verify your exact model, unlock your bootloader, meet firmware/vendor expectations, and flash the right builds using fastboot and the LineageOS installation flow.

Prerequisites and requirements
Before you touch anything, treat this as a full “device re-provisioning” process. A wrong image, missing firmware requirement, or interrupted flash can bootloop your phone.
- Unlocked bootloader (required).
- Correct LineageOS 23.0 build for your exact device (Xperia 1 IV vs Xperia 5 IV).
- Correct boot/recovery expectations (you’ll generally use LineageOS recovery packaging or LineageOS-compatible flashing).
- A working USB data connection and a stable computer environment (avoid hubs).
- Backup plan for photos, downloads, and app data you care about.
- Battery level: ideally 50%+ (and keep the phone connected during flashing).
Also check that your computer can run fastboot reliably. If you’ve flashed on Android before, you know the fastest path is having a clean driver setup and tested USB cable.
Identify your exact Xperia model and variant
Sony ships multiple regional variants. LineageOS builds are device-specific, not “close enough” interchangeable. You need to identify the exact model number.

Common model numbers are:
- Xperia 1 IV: often
XQ-CT72 - Xperia 5 IV: often
XQ-CA72
To confirm on-device: open Settings > About phone and look for Model.
Then confirm that the LineageOS 23.0 download you’re using lists the matching device codename on the official download page.
Tools you’ll need
- A Windows/macOS/Linux PC
- USB cable (data-capable, not just charging)
- Android platform tools for
adbandfastboot - LineageOS 23.0 ROM ZIP for your device
- Google Apps (optional) or another services package (optional)
- LineageOS recovery ZIP or instructions if your build requires it (varies by device support packaging)
- Optional: USB storage for moving ZIPs
Platform tools are available from Google; install them in a way that gives you a working fastboot command. On Windows, make sure your device is recognized in fastboot mode.
Back up first (and know what can’t be recovered)
Unlocking the bootloader will typically wipe user data (factory reset behavior). Even if you manage to preserve a few partitions, you should assume everything in internal storage is gone.
- Photos/videos: copy to a PC or cloud.
- Messages: use your preferred app’s backup/export if available.
- Authenticator apps: export backup codes or migrate properly before wiping.
- Account sign-ins: record passwords and 2FA setup so you can restore after the ROM install.
After a ROM switch, app-level data restoration usually depends on the apps themselves (and whether you use Android’s backup mechanisms). Don’t assume SMS, banking apps, and secure elements will behave the same way as stock.
Update Sony firmware prerequisites (vendor/bootloader expectations)
LineageOS for modern Xperia devices often assumes you’re on a compatible vendor/firmware baseline. If you’re significantly behind, your system may fail to boot, or you may see broken modem/audio/camera features.
The safe approach: update your stock firmware to a recent Sony build that matches the LineageOS maintainers’ requirements for Xperia 1 IV / Xperia 5 IV. The exact required firmware version is usually spelled out in the LineageOS installation notes and device wiki pages.

If you don’t see a requirement stated, don’t guess. Use the LineageOS device instructions as the source of truth.
Unlock the bootloader on Xperia 1 IV / Xperia 5 IV
Unlocking is the mandatory gateway. Sony’s process typically involves an official unlock code tied to your device and uses fastboot commands to verify unlock permission.
- Back up what you can (unlock will wipe data).
- Enable Developer options and USB debugging if not already enabled.
- Get your device into the bootloader/fastboot mode (commonly via key combo or using ADB reboot bootloader).
- Use Sony’s official bootloader unlock flow to obtain the unlock code.
- In fastboot mode, run the command to confirm unlock status, then apply the unlock code using Sony’s documented command sequence.
- Allow the device to wipe and reboot.
Common pitfall: having the phone in fastboot mode but using the wrong command (or wrong unlock token format). If the process errors, don’t keep retrying blindly—re-check your code entry and fastboot connectivity.
Install LineageOS 23.0 (clean flash)
A clean flash is the most reliable path when moving to a new Android major version (Android 14) or switching between ROM ecosystems. It reduces leftover configuration mismatches.
- Download the official LineageOS 23.0 ZIP for your Xperia model.
- Copy the ROM ZIP to the phone storage (or an SD card if your recovery supports it).
- Boot into LineageOS Recovery (or the recovery method required by your device support instructions).
- Perform a factory reset / wipe from recovery (this may include wiping data and cache).
- Optional but common: wipe system if your recovery offers it explicitly for a clean install.
- Install the LineageOS ZIP using Install > select the ROM file > confirm.
- If your device instructions require additional steps (like firmware or recovery components), follow those exact prompts.
- Reboot system.
First boot can take several minutes. If you’re stuck on a logo for longer than expected (for example, 20+ minutes), stop and use recovery to check what got flashed successfully.

If you’re already on LineageOS (especially from the same major branch), you might be able to upgrade by flashing the new build ZIP over your existing system. That said, Android 14 upgrades can break caches, signatures, and sometimes framework behavior.
Use an upgrade/dirty flash only if you’re following a documented upgrade path from the LineageOS device maintainer and you’re comfortable doing a clean reinstall if it fails.
- Boot into LineageOS Recovery.
- Choose Install and select the LineageOS 23.0 ZIP.
- Flash without wiping data, if and only if the installation instructions explicitly allow it.
- Reboot and verify basic functions: boot, Wi-Fi, telephony (if supported), audio, and camera.
If anything is broken (for example, random reboots, missing UI assets, or apps crashing), the fix is usually not another random ZIP—it’s a return to a clean flash.
Install Google apps vs. alternatives
LineageOS often does not ship with Google Mobile Services (GMS) by default. You have two common choices: install an OpenGApps-style package or use a microG-based approach (depending on your needs).
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Alternatives: use F-Droid apps, Aurora Store, or a non-Google setup if you want less tracking and fewer dependencies.
If you install GApps, do it during the recovery flash flow (usually right after ROM install, before first boot). Make sure the selected GApps variant matches the Android 14 base your LineageOS 23.0 is built on.

First boot and post-install configuration
After LineageOS boots into setup, complete initial configuration carefully. Some features won’t work until you grant permissions and set up networking.
- Connect to Wi-Fi (or set up mobile data if telephony is working on your build).
- Complete system setup and allow location permissions if you need maps/camera geotagging.
- Open Settings > System > Updates and check for any official LineageOS updates for your device.
- Reboot once after setup if you see unstable behavior (it’s a quick sanity test).
For power users, check for SELinux status and system logs once you confirm stability—especially if something like fingerprint or camera doesn’t behave correctly.
What works, what may not, and how to handle it
Support status can vary by build date. Xperia devices include multiple hardware components with vendor drivers, so “supported” doesn’t always mean “everything perfect on day one.”

If you hit a hardware-specific issue, don’t immediately change 5 variables. First, confirm you flashed the correct build for the exact model, then verify firmware baseline, then check logs and known issues on the LineageOS device pages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting when the install fails
Flashing problems usually fall into predictable categories: image mismatch, recovery not matching partitions, bootloader state, or incompatible firmware/vendor.
Bootloop after flashing
Try these in order: re-flash cleanly (factory reset + wipe), confirm you installed the correct LineageOS 23.0 ZIP for your Xperia model, and verify any required firmware step from the device instructions.
- Reboot into recovery and confirm ZIP installs completed without errors.
- Perform a full wipe (data/system/cache) and flash again.
- If the ROM install succeeded but boot fails, the firmware baseline is the next suspect.
Recovery can’t mount storage or install ZIP
Common causes include corrupted ZIP downloads or storage format mismatches. Re-download the ROM ZIP and verify the file integrity (checksums are typically provided on release pages).
- Re-check the ZIP file size and checksum (if provided).
- Copy the ZIP again using a direct USB transfer (avoid flaky card readers).
- Confirm you’re in the correct recovery and that it recognizes the storage location you’re selecting.
No SIM / no service after install
This is usually a firmware/vendor requirement issue or an incomplete mobile stack configuration. Confirm you’re on the firmware version listed in the LineageOS Xperia 1 IV / Xperia 5 IV instructions.
- Reboot and verify SIM PIN behavior.
- Check network settings manually in Settings > Network & internet.
- If it still fails, return to the documented firmware prerequisite steps and avoid random modem flashes.
Wi-Fi works but Bluetooth audio is broken
Audio route and codec support can vary by headset and build date. Confirm you’re using the correct pairing mode, then test with another Bluetooth device to isolate whether it’s your phone or your headset.
If it’s consistently broken across devices, look for updates to LineageOS 23.0 for your target and consider a clean flash after updating.

Fingerprint or face unlock doesn’t work
Biometrics rely on vendor integration. The two usual fixes are flashing the correct build variant and verifying you didn’t dirty-upgrade from a mismatched base.
- Verify fingerprint enrollment works in recovery-first boot scenarios.
- If it never works, do not keep editing system partitions—use known-good builds and a clean flash.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Flashing the wrong device build (Xperia 1 IV ZIP on Xperia 5 IV or vice versa).
- Skipping required firmware updates when maintainers specify them.
- Forgetting to verify checksums after a download.
- Dirty-flashing between incompatible bases without a documented upgrade path.
- Using unstable USB cables/hubs during flash operations.
A simple rule: when something goes wrong, don’t keep changing everything. Fix the most fundamental mismatch first (device variant + firmware + ZIP integrity).
Alternatives if you’re not ready for LineageOS
If your priority is stability over features, you can wait for the next LineageOS build iteration or test alternative ROMs only after confirming Xperia-specific camera/modem status on your build date.
- Stock Sony firmware: safest baseline if you rely on carrier features.
- Other custom ROMs: choose only those with explicit Xperia 1 IV / Xperia 5 IV support and clear installation guidance.
- Stay on a current LineageOS build and upgrade later once you confirm early adopter feedback.
Frequently asked questions
Is LineageOS 23.0 based on Android 14?
Yes. LineageOS 23.0 aligns with Android 14, which is why you should expect behavior changes in system components compared to older LineageOS releases.
Will unlocking the bootloader wipe my Xperia?
In most Sony unlock flows, yes. Plan for a full data wipe and back up anything that matters before you start.
Can I restore my apps after flashing?
You can restore many apps from backups (and Google-based restore if you use GApps), but full fidelity restoration isn’t guaranteed. Banking, SMS, and authenticator apps may require re-setup.
Do I need Google apps with LineageOS 23.0?
No. You can run without GMS, but you’ll need alternatives for apps that assume Google services (Play Store, some maps features, push notifications in certain apps).
What if my camera or mobile network is unreliable?
First confirm correct firmware baseline and correct device build. Then check whether your issue matches known limitations for your specific Xperia model and the release date of the LineageOS 23.0 build.
Bottom Line
LineageOS 23.0 support for Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 5 IV is a strong upgrade path if you want a maintained Android 14 experience beyond Sony’s stock timeline. The success rate depends less on luck and more on correct device identification, correct firmware baseline, verified ZIP integrity, and a clean flash when moving across major changes.
