The Sony WH-CH730N charges through USB Type-C, offers its longest runtime with noise-control modes disabled, and can maintain Bluetooth connections with two devices through Sony Sound Connect. This guide explains the exact charging procedure, Sony’s codec- and mode-dependent battery figures, quick-charge expectations, multipoint setup, and fixes for charging problems.
How to charge the WH-CH730N
The WH-CH730N has a built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Use a USB Type-C cable connected to the headset and either a USB AC adaptor or a computer that is switched on. Sony specifies a USB supply capable of at least 0.5 A.

Charging procedure
- Make sure the USB Type-C port and cable connector are clean and dry.
- Insert the USB Type-C plug into the headset’s charging port.
- Connect the other end to a USB AC adaptor rated for at least 0.5 A, or to a running computer.
- Check the orange indicator. It remains lit while charging.
- Leave the headset connected until the indicator turns off automatically, indicating that charging is complete. Sony estimates a full charge at about three hours.
Charging through a computer can fail if the computer enters sleep mode. Some USB hubs also do not provide a stable enough connection, so connect directly to a powered USB port or AC adaptor when possible.

Safe charging conditions
Keep the charging socket free of liquid, dust and foreign material. Sony’s specified charging range is 5 °C to 35 °C (41 °F to 95 °F). If the headset detects excessive temperature, disconnect the cable, allow the unit to cool, remove any moisture or debris, and try again only after the port is dry and the headset is within that temperature range.

WH-CH730N battery life by codec and sound mode
Sony’s maximum music-playback figures depend on the Bluetooth codec and whether Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound Mode is active. They are maximum estimates rather than a guarantee for every phone, volume level or software configuration.

For calls, Sony rates communication time at up to 35 hours with Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound Mode active and up to 40 hours with both modes inactive. Equalizer settings, DSEE, Service Link and other changes made in Sony Sound Connect can reduce runtime. Higher volume, frequent voice calls, a weak Bluetooth link and temperature extremes can also produce less than the published maximum.
How to interpret the figures
- Use the AAC/SBC rows when your phone is using one of those codecs; do not apply the LC3 estimate automatically.
- “Mode active” means either Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound Mode is switched on. The two modes do not need to be active together for that row to apply.
- To approach the longest estimate, leave both sound-control modes off and avoid battery-intensive Sound Connect processing.
- Battery percentages shown by a phone are estimates and may update in steps rather than continuously.

How much playback does a quick charge provide?
Sony specifies approximately 60 minutes of music playback after a three-minute charge and approximately 4.5 hours after a 10-minute charge.

Quick-charge results are useful for a commute or a short meeting, but they do not replace a complete charge when the headset will be used for a full day. The orange indicator still follows the normal charging behavior during a quick charge.
Does the WH-CH730N support two devices at once?
Yes. Sony says the headset can be connected simultaneously to two Bluetooth devices through multipoint. This allows playback switching between two devices and call standby on both, but it does not create two independent music streams: only one source supplies music at a time.

Stored pairings versus active connections
The headset can remember up to eight paired devices. Pairing storage is not the same as simultaneous connection capacity: without multipoint, one paired device supplies music at a time; with multipoint enabled, two devices can remain connected.

Pair the headset with a phone, tablet or computer
For initial pairing, keep the source device within 1 metre of the headset.
- Turn off the headset if it is already on.
- Press and hold the headset power button for about five seconds or longer. Release it when pairing mode starts.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet or computer.
- Select WH-CH730N series from the available-device list.
- Accept the pairing request if prompted, then play a short track to confirm the connection.
Repeat these steps for each device you want stored. If the list already contains eight devices, a new pairing may require deleting an old entry from the phone and headset’s Bluetooth history.

Set up multipoint in Sony Sound Connect
Pair the headset separately with both devices before enabling multipoint. The setting is controlled in Sony Sound Connect; app wording can vary with firmware, mobile operating system and region.
- Connect the headset to the first device.
- Open Sony Sound Connect.
- Choose Connect to 2 devices simultaneously.
- Turn on the multipoint toggle.
- Open the Paired list and select the two devices you want connected.
- Confirm that both devices appear under Connected.
Sony’s regional support procedure was current in June 2026. If the option is missing, update Sound Connect and the headset firmware where the app offers an update, then disconnect and pair the devices again.

With both devices connected, start playback on one device and pause it before starting audio on the other. Starting playback on the second device can move the headset’s audio focus from the first. Some phones and computers retain audio focus until their player is paused, so stopping the first stream manually is the most predictable method.

Adding a third device
Multipoint is limited to two active connections. If a third device connects, Sony says the device that most recently played music remains connected and the other connected device is disconnected. The displaced device must be reconnected later if you want it back in the two-device set.
Two-phone call standby
Two smartphones can remain on call standby. If calls overlap, operate the phone holding the first call to end that call; the headset does not provide a universal way to merge or independently manage both calls. Phone operating systems can also impose their own call-audio rules.
Why the WH-CH730N may not charge
No orange indicator
- Try a different USB Type-C cable known to carry power, then connect directly to a USB AC adaptor.
- Verify that the adaptor can provide at least 0.5 A.
- If using a computer, keep it awake and connected to mains power; a sleeping computer may stop USB output.
- Inspect the port for lint, moisture or bent material. Do not force the connector or use a wet object to clean it.
Charging stops or fails through a hub
Some hubs cannot deliver consistent current to the headset. Bypass the hub and use a wall adaptor or a direct computer port. If the cable works with another USB-powered device but not the headset, test a second cable before assuming the headset is defective.
High-temperature or moisture warning
Disconnect the charger immediately. Let the headset return to room temperature, wipe away external moisture, and check that the port is clear. Retry only in Sony’s 5 °C–35 °C charging range. Continued warnings after the port is dry indicate that Sony support or an authorized service channel should inspect the unit.
The indicator turns off but runtime is very short
A full indicator does not guarantee the battery still has its original capacity. Compare runtime with the same codec, volume and sound-mode settings. Disable unnecessary equalizer, DSEE and Service Link processing for a controlled check. If capacity has fallen substantially, Sony instructs owners to arrange battery replacement through a dealer; the Help Guide does not list a user-replaceable battery part or procedure.
Battery care when the headset is stored
If the WH-CH730N will not be used for months, Sony recommends charging it at least once every six months to reduce deterioration caused by over-discharge. Store it in a dry place at moderate temperature, and do not leave it connected to a charger indefinitely in hot conditions. A lithium-ion battery that swells, becomes unusually hot, leaks or smells abnormal should be disconnected from power and handled by Sony support or an authorized dealer rather than opened at home.
