Choose the Sony WH-CH720N if you prioritize the lighter design and Sony’s longer stated battery maximum. Choose the WH-1000XM4 if its more extensive documented noise-canceling optimization and smart-listening features are more important. Both models support multipoint pairing with two devices, so that feature does not decide the comparison.
Those are specification-based buying recommendations, not a claim that one sounds, cancels noise, fits or handles calls better in every situation. Sony’s published pages describe the feature sets and battery conditions; no independent, controlled head-to-head test is established for these models here.

The short answer
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest stated weight positioning and longer published battery maximum | Sony WH-CH720N | Sony calls it its “lightest Wireless Noise-canceling headband ever” and states up to 35 hours of Bluetooth music playback under specified conditions. |
| More extensive documented noise-canceling and listening automation | Sony WH-1000XM4 | Its page lists the QN1 HD Noise Cancelling Processor, Personal NC Optimizer, Atmospheric Pressure Optimizing, Adaptive Sound Control, Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention and wearing detection. |
| Two-device multipoint | Neither has an inherent advantage | Sony says both connect to two devices at once. |
| Current price | Check both listings | The WH-CH720N page lists a $179.99 MSRP, while retailer prices, promotions and the condition of WH-1000XM4 stock can change. |
In practical terms, the WH-CH720N is the simpler decision for someone who wants Sony’s lightest headband design and the higher published battery number. The WH-1000XM4 makes more sense when you will use its additional automatic listening functions and its documented noise-canceling controls often enough to justify choosing the older, more feature-rich model.

What the two models are
WH-CH720N: the lighter, newer option
Sony presents the WH-CH720N as a wireless, over-ear noise-canceling headband built around Dual Noise Sensor technology and an Integrated Processor V1. Its product page also describes adjustable ambient sound through Sony’s app, multipoint connectivity and wind-noise reduction around the microphone. The page lists a $179.99 MSRP; that is a manufacturer-listed reference price, not a promise of what every retailer currently charges.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The model launched in Sony’s 2023 product documentation. Its most prominent differentiator is not a laboratory claim about cancellation performance; it is the combination of the lightest-design positioning, a current processor platform and a 35-hour maximum under a particular playback setup.
WH-1000XM4: the feature-heavy premium model
The WH-1000XM4 page describes Dual Noise Sensor technology paired with Sony’s QN1 HD Noise Cancelling Processor. It adds Personal NC Optimizer and Atmospheric Pressure Optimizing, which are intended to tailor the noise-control system to conditions and the wearer. The same page lists Adaptive Sound Control, Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention, wearing detection, multipoint and five microphones with Precise Voice Pickup.
Sony’s documentation for this model dates to 2020. It is therefore important not to treat every difference as a generational upgrade in the newer product: the WH-CH720N is newer, but the WH-1000XM4 remains the model with the broader set of documented automation and optimization functions.

Noise cancellation: compare the feature sets, not an unproven winner
What WH-CH720N provides
- Dual Noise Sensor technology.
- Sony’s Integrated Processor V1.
- Ambient-sound adjustment through the Sony app.
- Wind-noise reduction around the microphone.
These features give you control over how much outside sound is reduced or allowed through. The app-based adjustment is useful when you need to move between isolation and awareness, but the available documentation does not establish a standardized measurement showing how many decibels the WH-CH720N removes in a particular environment.
What WH-1000XM4 adds
- Dual Noise Sensor technology with the QN1 HD Noise Cancelling Processor.
- Personal NC Optimizer.
- Atmospheric Pressure Optimizing.
- Adaptive Sound Control.
- Speak-to-Chat and Quick Attention listening modes.
- Wearing detection.
The WH-1000XM4 therefore has the more elaborate documented control system. Personal optimization and atmospheric-pressure adjustment are especially relevant if you fly or move between substantially different environments, while Adaptive Sound Control and wearing detection reduce the number of manual actions during a typical day.

However, a longer feature list is not the same as proof of superior real-world cancellation. The available evidence is Sony’s product documentation rather than an independent, identical test of the two headphones. If your decision depends on absolute attenuation of voices, engines or transit noise, check a retailer’s return policy and evaluate the fit yourself instead of treating the processor names as a guaranteed ranking.
Battery life and charging
| Model | Sony’s published maximum | Conditions stated by Sony | Other charging information |
|---|---|---|---|
| WH-CH720N | Up to 35 hours | Bluetooth music playback with DSEE off and the AAC codec; Sony says codec, settings, environment and use affect actual runtime. | No additional charging figure is established in the supplied product information. |
| WH-1000XM4 | Up to 30 hours | Noise canceling on; Sony likewise notes that settings and conditions change real-world runtime. | Up to five hours of playback from a ten-minute charge, according to Sony. |
The headline numbers favor the WH-CH720N by five hours, but they are not the result of a standardized head-to-head test. Sony Electronics states “up to 35 hours” for the WH-CH720N in its 2023 documentation under the DSEE-off/AAC Bluetooth condition, and “up to 30 hours” for the WH-1000XM4 in its 2020 documentation with noise canceling on. Because the test assumptions are worded differently, do not calculate a precise percentage advantage from the two figures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a commuter who values fewer charging sessions, the WH-CH720N’s published maximum is the stronger specification. For someone who frequently forgets to charge, the WH-1000XM4’s stated five-hour result after ten minutes is the more useful kind of information: a short top-up can cover a substantial listening block. In either case, high volume, wireless activity, codec choice, noise-canceling mode and environmental conditions can reduce the actual time you obtain.
Weight, fit and all-day wear
Sony explicitly markets the WH-CH720N as its “lightest Wireless Noise-canceling headband ever.” That is a Sony product claim and should be read as positioning, not as an independently verified comfort result. Sony’s published information does not provide a comparable measured weight for the WH-1000XM4, nor does it establish how either model performs across different head shapes, glasses, hairstyles or clamping preferences.
Choose the WH-CH720N when reducing the physical burden of a headband is your first filter. A lighter design can be attractive for long study sessions, office use or travel, but comfort still depends on pad contact, headband pressure and personal fit. Choose the WH-1000XM4 when its listening automation and noise-control options matter more than the lightest-design claim. If possible, use a returnable purchase so you can check seal, pressure and heat during the length of session you actually expect to wear them.

Smart listening, microphones and calls
Multipoint is a tie
Both headphones support multipoint connection to two devices. Sony’s support article states that “Multipoint connection works with only two devices at a time.” That normally covers a phone and a computer, but it does not mean three devices can remain simultaneously connected. Sony also notes that the audio settings on the connected devices can affect how calls and media behave.

Microphone information
Sony lists five microphones and Precise Voice Pickup for the WH-1000XM4. For the WH-CH720N, Sony highlights wind-noise reduction around its microphone. Those descriptions indicate different approaches to voice pickup, but they do not constitute a controlled call-quality comparison. Background noise, your fit, the calling app and the computer’s selected input can all change the result.
If calls are central to your purchase, verify that your phone or computer is using the headphones’ microphone rather than its built-in mic, and test in the environment where you will speak. The published feature lists alone do not justify saying that either model always produces clearer calls.
Automation on the WH-1000XM4
Speak-to-Chat is designed to react when you begin speaking, while Quick Attention provides a deliberate way to hear surrounding sound without fully removing the headphones. Adaptive Sound Control can adjust listening behavior based on the situation, and wearing detection can respond when the headphones are put on or removed. These are convenience features for people who move between music, conversations and announcements frequently.

The WH-CH720N’s documentation emphasizes adjustable ambient sound rather than the same collection of automatic transitions. If you prefer to choose your listening mode manually and want fewer behaviors to configure, that simpler approach may be preferable.
How to use two-device multipoint
Sony’s support instructions cover pairing a phone and a computer. The exact menus can vary by operating system, but the safe sequence is:
- Pair the headphones with the first device from that device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Use Sony’s multipoint guidance to pair the second device, such as a computer, while keeping the first device available.
- Confirm that both devices show an active connection; only two devices can be connected simultaneously.
- Set the desired playback output and call input on each device. Sony notes that these device-level audio settings can affect whether calls or media take over the connection.
- If audio does not switch as expected, pause playback on the first device and check which device is handling the call or media session before reconnecting.
For the model-specific pairing flow and current support instructions, use Sony’s multipoint connection guide. The two-device limit is a capability boundary, not a fault that can be fixed by repeating the pairing process.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- The exact model number: WH-CH720N or WH-1000XM4.
- Whether the unit is new, refurbished, open-box or used.
- The seller of record and the return period.
- What accessories and warranty coverage are included.
- Whether the displayed price is a temporary promotion rather than a recurring price.
This check is particularly important for the WH-1000XM4 because an older model may appear in multiple conditions and from multiple sellers. A lower listing price is meaningful only after you establish that the condition, warranty and return terms meet your requirements.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the WH-CH720N when these priorities lead
- You want Sony’s stated lightest wireless noise-canceling headband design.
- You value the higher published battery maximum and understand that it applies to DSEE-off/AAC Bluetooth playback.
- You need adjustable ambient sound but do not specifically require the WH-1000XM4’s optimizer and automation functions.
- You want multipoint for a phone and computer; both models provide it.
- The current WH-CH720N price, seller and warranty are more attractive after checking a live listing.
This is the rational pick for a buyer whose everyday decision is dominated by weight and charging frequency. It is not a guarantee of better cancellation, sound or call quality, because those comparisons are not established by the cited specifications.
Choose the WH-1000XM4 when these priorities lead
- You want the more extensive documented noise-control system: QN1 processing, Personal NC Optimizer and Atmospheric Pressure Optimizing.
- You will use Adaptive Sound Control, Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention or wearing detection.
- You value the published five-microphone Precise Voice Pickup description.
- Quick charging of up to five hours from ten minutes is more useful to you than the WH-CH720N’s higher maximum runtime.
- You find a verified listing in acceptable new or refurbished condition with suitable returns and warranty.
This choice is about features and workflow rather than the assumption that an older premium model must outperform the newer one in every category. Its documented advantages are the breadth of controls and automation, while its battery maximum is lower on paper.

If your primary question is “Which one blocks the most noise?” or “Which one sounds better?”, the available manufacturer pages cannot answer it conclusively. They identify different processors and controls but do not provide a controlled comparison. Fit can change perceived isolation as much as the electronics, and preferences for bass, pressure and transparency are personal.
In that situation, compare the live prices and return terms, then test the model you can return. Evaluate the seal and comfort with your normal glasses or hairstyle, try your usual commuting or office sounds, make a call in a realistic location, and observe how the automatic modes behave. Treat that personal trial as your decision evidence rather than converting Sony’s feature names into an unsupported performance ranking.
Evidence limits you should keep in mind
The numerical claims in this comparison are manufacturer specifications: up to 35 hours for the WH-CH720N under Sony’s stated 2023 DSEE-off/AAC Bluetooth condition, and up to 30 hours for the WH-1000XM4 with noise canceling on in Sony’s 2020 documentation. They are not independent battery measurements made under identical settings.
Likewise, no independent controlled head-to-head test is established here for noise attenuation, audio quality, comfort or microphone performance. The safest interpretation is feature-based: the WH-CH720N emphasizes lightness, ambient adjustment and a higher published maximum; the WH-1000XM4 documents more optimization and smart-listening functions. Your final choice should account for current condition, seller, price and returnability as well as those specifications.
