In brief: Sony rates the WH-CH720N for up to 35 hours of continuous music with noise canceling (NC) on and up to 50 hours with NC off. Calls are rated separately at up to 35 hours with NC or Ambient Sound on and up to 40 hours with both off. These are manufacturer maximums, not a guarantee for every owner: settings, temperature, wireless use, volume, call activity and battery age all affect the result.
The biggest practical gains come from switching off processing and awareness features you do not need, charging correctly, avoiding heat and moisture, and checking like-for-like usage before deciding that the battery is failing.

Sony WH-CH720N battery-life ratings
Sony publishes separate figures for music playback and communication. Its current specifications page lists the same music maximums for the AAC and SBC Bluetooth codecs: up to 35 hours with noise canceling on and up to 50 hours with noise canceling off. See Sony’s WH-CH720N specifications.

Sony’s 2023 WH-CH720N Help Guide gives the mode-by-mode table and identifies the numbers as available operating time. “Up to” is important: it describes a ceiling, not a promised duration from a particular charge. Sony also cautions on the product page that “Actual performance varies based on settings, environmental conditions, and usage.”

Music and calls should not be compared as though they are the same test. During a call, the microphones, voice processing and two-way Bluetooth connection remain active; a long meeting can therefore produce a different result from listening to downloaded music. Volume and the way the headset is used also matter, so a 35-hour music rating cannot be used to predict a fixed number of call hours.
Why your runtime can be lower than 35 or 50 hours
Noise canceling and Ambient Sound
NC and Ambient Sound require the headset’s microphones and signal processing to remain active. Sony’s table places music playback at the lower, 35-hour maximum when NC is on, and at up to 50 hours when both NC and Ambient Sound are off. Ambient Sound is useful when you need environmental awareness, but it has a similar battery trade-off.
Sound processing and equalizer settings
Sony specifically lists the equalizer, DSEE, sound-quality setting and voice activation for the voice assistant as factors that shorten operating time. These functions process audio or keep additional listening circuitry ready, so enabling several at once can reduce runtime further. Sony does not publish a separate hour penalty for each setting; treat the 35- and 50-hour figures as mode-level maximums rather than addable allowances.

Communication uses a different power profile from music. Frequent calls, microphone activity and voice-assistant use can reduce the time available from one charge. Higher listening levels can also change consumption. Sony’s general performance caveat includes environmental conditions and usage, so cold, heat, wireless conditions and the way you operate the headset can all move real-world results away from the headline number.

Bluetooth codec: what Sony does and does not show
It is tempting to blame the Bluetooth codec for a large difference, but Sony’s own table lists the same maximum music hours for AAC and SBC. On this model, Sony’s published figures do not establish a large battery advantage for choosing one of those codecs. Use the codec that works best with your phone or computer rather than changing it solely to chase an unverified runtime gain.
How to make the WH-CH720N last longer between charges
- Turn off NC or Ambient Sound when you do not need it. In a quiet room, airplane seat or office, use the mode that meets your awareness needs rather than leaving microphones active continuously. The trade-off is straightforward: you give up active isolation or amplified outside sound in exchange for the higher published music maximum.
- Disable DSEE when maximum endurance matters. DSEE changes audio processing. If you are travelling, working through a long day or listening to speech where the processing benefit is minor, switch it off and restore it when you want the feature.
- Use a simpler equalizer or turn it off. Sony names equalizer operation as a runtime factor. Keep your preferred EQ for listening sessions where its sound change matters, but do not assume it is free from a battery perspective.
- Turn off voice activation for the assistant. If you do not use wake-word access through the headphones, disabling voice activation removes an unnecessary always-ready function. You can still invoke an assistant manually from your phone.
- Choose the sound-quality mode deliberately. Sony says the sound-quality setting affects operating time. Select the mode you need for the current task instead of leaving a processing-heavy option enabled for every session.
- Reduce unnecessary call time on the headset. A call uses the communication profile, not the music profile. When a meeting is over, disconnect or switch the conversation to another device so the headset is not maintaining an active link.
- Keep playback conditions consistent when judging battery health. Note the same NC/Ambient Sound state, similar volume and the same type of content each time. A comparison made with music one day and calls the next can make a healthy battery appear inconsistent.
These changes alter sound processing or environmental awareness. Apply only the ones whose trade-off you accept; a longer number is not automatically better if you need NC for travel or Ambient Sound for safety.
Charging time, quick top-ups and the correct equipment
Sony estimates that about three minutes of charging can provide about 60 minutes of music playback, and about 10 minutes can provide about 4.5 hours. Those are Sony’s stated quick-charge estimates, not guaranteed results for every battery, temperature or listening mode. The Help Guide lists approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge from empty, with charging time varying by use conditions. Details are in the available operating time guide.

Charging procedure
- Make sure the headset is dry and within the recommended charging temperature range.
- Connect the supplied USB-C cable to the headset’s USB-C port.
- Connect the other end directly to a computer USB port or to a USB AC adapter rated at least 0.5 A. Sony notes that some cables and adapters may not charge the headset reliably and recommends connecting directly to a computer rather than through a USB hub.
- Leave it connected until the charge is complete. The orange indicator provides the charging status described in Sony’s guide.
- Disconnect the cable before normal listening. The WH-CH720N cannot play music or perform normal operating functions while connected to an AC outlet or computer for charging.
If a quick top-up produces much less playback than Sony’s estimate, repeat the check after a normal full charge and compare the same usage mode. A short top-up is especially sensitive to battery condition and operating settings, so it should not be treated as a precision capacity test.
Temperature, moisture and safe charging
Stay within the charging temperature range
Sony specifies an ambient charging range of 5–35 °C (41–95 °F). For efficient charging in its short-runtime guidance, Sony recommends 15–35 °C (59–95 °F). If the headset has been in a cold car or a hot bag, let it return to a suitable room temperature before connecting it.
If the orange indicator flashes because of temperature or a battery problem, retry charging within the 5–35 °C range. If the indicator continues to flash, Sony advises contacting a Sony dealer. The detailed instructions are in Sony’s charging the headset guide.

Do not plug in the WH-CH720N after exposure to rain, sweat or another liquid. Sony warns that charging while the headset is wet can cause malfunction or burnout. Wipe it, allow it to dry completely and inspect the port before charging. Avoid sealing a damp headset in a case, where drying takes longer.

What to do when the headset has been stored
A battery that has sat unused for a long period may initially provide fewer hours. Sony says operating time can improve after several charge/discharge cycles, so an immediate low result after storage is not by itself proof of permanent failure.
For long-term storage, charge the headset approximately once every six months to avoid over-discharge. Sony states this interval in the Help Guide. Store it in a dry place at a moderate temperature, with the headset switched off rather than left connected to a charger indefinitely.

There is no single owner measurement that proves battery health, and the rated maximums alone cannot diagnose an individual unit. Use a consistent, repeatable comparison instead:
- Start with a full charge. Charge normally with the supplied cable and a compliant adapter. Record when charging finishes.
- Define the activity. Test music playback or calls, not a mixture. Note the app or device and whether content is streamed or local.
- Record power-related settings. Write down NC, Ambient Sound, DSEE, equalizer, voice activation and sound-quality mode. Keep them unchanged during the comparison.
- Keep conditions similar. Use a similar volume, room temperature and Bluetooth distance. This is a practical home comparison, not a controlled laboratory test.
- Repeat after storage if necessary. If the headset was unused for months, allow several ordinary charge/discharge cycles and then compare again.
- Look for a significant, persistent decrease. A one-off short session, a call-heavy day or a cold charging environment is not enough to establish failure. A large drop that remains under comparable conditions is more meaningful.
When the decrease is significant, Sony’s guidance is to consult a Sony dealer about replacement of the built-in rechargeable battery. The battery is not presented as a user-removable part in the cited instructions; do not open the earcups or attempt an improvised cell replacement.

A practical runtime plan for common situations
Daily office or home listening
Use NC or Ambient Sound only when it solves a real noise problem. Keep DSEE, EQ and voice activation off if you do not need them, and top up during a normal break rather than waiting for the battery to reach empty. This approach favors the longer music-playback mode without requiring you to sacrifice features permanently.
Flights and noisy commutes
NC may be the reason you bought the headset, so the 35-hour maximum with NC on is the relevant planning figure. Begin the trip fully charged, carry the supplied USB-C cable and use Sony’s three-minute quick-charge estimate only as a convenience—not as a promise that every short stop will restore exactly one hour.
Video meetings and phone calls
Plan around the communication ratings: up to 35 hours with NC or Ambient Sound on and up to 40 hours with both off. Calls, microphone activity and assistant functions can change the result, so a long meeting day should not be compared directly with a music-only day.
Common mistakes that waste battery or create misleading results
- Assuming the 50-hour figure applies with NC enabled. Sony’s 50-hour maximum is the noise-canceling-off music mode; NC on is rated up to 35 hours.
- Using the call rating for music. Communication and music have separate published figures.
- Blaming AAC or SBC without evidence. Sony lists the same maximum music hours for both codecs.
- Leaving every processing feature enabled. Sony names DSEE, EQ, voice activation and sound-quality settings as runtime factors.
- Charging through a questionable hub or cable. Connect directly to a computer or use a compliant adapter and the supplied cable.
- Charging while damp. Moisture can cause malfunction or burnout.
- Testing immediately after months of storage. Sony says several cycles may be needed before operating time improves.
- Using a single short session as a capacity test. Compare full charges, matching modes and similar conditions before seeking service.
The bottom line on WH-CH720N battery life
Use 35 hours for music with NC on and 50 hours with NC off as Sony’s planning ceilings, not guarantees. Calls are rated up to 35 hours with NC or Ambient Sound on and up to 40 hours with both off. To stretch each charge, disable DSEE, EQ, voice activation and other processing you do not need, charge with the supplied USB-C cable and a 0.5 A-or-higher adapter, keep the headset dry and within the recommended temperature range, and recharge a stored headset about every six months. If a large runtime loss persists after a like-for-like check and several cycles, contact a Sony dealer about the built-in battery.
