Sony WH-CH530 vs WH-CH520: Which Budget Headphones Should You Buy?

Choose the Sony WH-CH530 if you want the newer wireless platform, LC3 support and Sony’s longer 55-hour music-playback claim. Choose the WH-CH520 if it is substantially cheaper and Bluetooth 5.2, SBC/AAC, multipoint and up to 50 hours are all you need. Both are lightweight, closed-back on-ear headphones with 30 mm drivers, and neither provides active noise cancellation.

What actually changes between the WH-CH530 and WH-CH520?

The WH-CH530 is the newer model and its main advantages are connectivity and claimed battery capacity rather than a radically different design. It moves from Bluetooth 5.2 to Bluetooth 6.0, adds the LC3 codec alongside SBC and AAC, and raises Sony’s maximum continuous-music figure from 50 to 55 hours. Both models retain multipoint pairing, so you can keep two Bluetooth devices connected for switching between, for example, a phone and a laptop.

The WH-CH520 remains relevant when its street price is meaningfully lower. For ordinary phone, tablet and laptop listening, both models still use the widely supported SBC and AAC codecs. The newer specification is therefore most valuable to buyers who specifically want the latest Bluetooth platform or the extra claimed endurance.

Battery life and charging

WH-CH530: five extra claimed music hours

Sony’s 2026 specification gives the WH-CH530 up to 55 hours of continuous music playback and up to 35 hours of continuous communication, with approximately three hours for a full charge. The 55-hour number is a maximum manufacturer rating, not a guarantee for every listening pattern.

WH-CH520: strong endurance, different call rating

Sony advertises up to 50 hours of battery life for the WH-CH520 and lists approximately three hours of charging. Its specification lists up to 40 hours of communication time. The two models’ music and call figures should not be treated as directly interchangeable: Sony rates them under different usage conditions, and the WH-CH520’s higher communication figure does not mean it will last longer for music.

Both use USB-C quick charging according to Sony’s WH-CH520 product information. If your priority is the longest stated music runtime, the WH-CH530 has the edge; if the WH-CH520 costs much less, five claimed hours may not justify the premium.

Bluetooth, codecs and multipoint

What Bluetooth 6.0 adds

The WH-CH530 uses Bluetooth 6.0 and supports SBC, AAC and LC3. LC3 is the meaningful platform addition: it is a newer Bluetooth audio codec that can be useful with compatible source devices. Bluetooth 6.0 and LC3 do not automatically make every phone or laptop sound better, because the source must support the relevant features.

Why Bluetooth 5.2 is still sufficient for many buyers

The WH-CH520 uses Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC and AAC. Those codecs cover common Android, iPhone, Windows and macOS playback scenarios. If your devices already deliver the connection stability and sound quality you expect, moving to Bluetooth 6.0 is an upgrade in specification rather than a guaranteed audible improvement.

Multipoint on both models

Multipoint is available on both headphones. Sony lists multipoint for the WH-CH530, while its WH-CH520 product page says the headset can pair with two Bluetooth devices at once. This is useful for switching between a work computer and a phone without repeatedly opening Bluetooth settings, although the exact switching behavior depends on the connected devices and active audio.

Design, fit and noise control

Both headphones are closed-back, on-ear designs with Sony-listed 30 mm drivers. The WH-CH530 weighs approximately 150 g and the WH-CH520 approximately 147 g, a three-gram difference that is unlikely to determine comfort by itself. Clamp force, pad shape, head size and whether your ears tolerate on-ear pressure will matter more.

Neither model is an ANC headset. Sony’s WH-CH520 information explicitly says there is no active noise cancellation or ambient-sound mode, and ANC is not listed in the WH-CH530 specification. Their closed-back construction may reduce some outside sound, but it is not the same as electronic noise reduction. Neither is the right choice if you need strong isolation on an aircraft, train or busy office.

Neither model is a substitute for headphones with a wired input. Buyers who need a cable connection should choose a different product class.

Sound expectations

What Hi-Fi?’s comparison, published 14 October 2026, describes the WH-CH530 as “well-balanced, expressive and surprisingly enjoyable” for its price. That is an attributed editorial listening assessment, not a laboratory frequency-response measurement. The documented differences support treating the WH-CH530 primarily as a connectivity-and-battery update; they do not establish that every listener will hear a dramatic improvement over the WH-CH520.

Which model is better value?

Buy the WH-CH530 when

  • You want Bluetooth 6.0 and LC3 support for compatible devices.
  • You value Sony’s higher, up-to-55-hour music-playback claim.
  • You are buying new and the price gap is small.
  • You want the newer model for a longer likely support and availability window, without expecting ANC.

Buy the WH-CH520 when

  • It is substantially cheaper at the time you buy.
  • Your devices only require Bluetooth 5.2, SBC and AAC.
  • Up to 50 hours of advertised battery life already meets your routine.
  • You still want multipoint and a lightweight on-ear design.

Prices and stock change by country, retailer and date, so compare the exact model listing immediately before purchase. A small discount favors the WH-CH530; a large discount can make the WH-CH520 the more sensible value because both retain the core conveniences of multipoint, USB-C charging and long battery life.

Bottom line

The WH-CH530 is the feature-forward choice: Bluetooth 6.0, LC3 and a maximum 55-hour music claim. The WH-CH520 is the value choice when its price is materially lower and you do not need those additions. Both are lightweight on-ear Bluetooth headphones without active noise cancellation, and neither should be bought for a wired listening mode.
