Sony WH-1000XM6 vs. WH-CH720N: What’s the Difference?

The model name matters: “WH-1000XM” describes Sony’s premium headphone family, not one single headset. This comparison uses the current WH-1000XM6; Sony also lists the older WH-1000XM5 as a separate model. The WH-CH720N is the lighter, longer-rated option, while the XM6 is the more fully specified model with additional Bluetooth codecs and a carrying case listed in the box contents. Both support noise-control modes, wired listening and multipoint connections according to Sony’s documentation.

At a glance: the measurable differences

The figures below come from Sony specification pages for Canada (WH-CH720N) and the United States (WH-1000XM6), accessed in 2026. They are manufacturer ratings rather than independent measurements. Regional pages can differ, so check the page for the market where you will buy.

Rated music playback with noise cancelling off Up to 50 hours Up to 40 hours The CH720N also has the longer stated maximum with NC disabled.
Bluetooth codecs listed by Sony SBC, AAC SBC, AAC, LDAC, LC3 The XM6 supports more listed formats, but your phone, computer or player must support them too.
Bluetooth version Bluetooth 5.2 Bluetooth 5.3 The version numbers alone do not establish a particular sound-quality or range advantage.
Multipoint Supported; Sony describes connection to two devices Listed as supported Either model can be considered for switching between two everyday source devices.
Wired connection Stereo mini-jack; passive operation listed Stereo mini-jack; passive operation listed Both can be used with a cable, including when Bluetooth is not being used.
Items Sony lists in the box Connection cable and USB cable Carrying case, connection cable and USB cable Sony’s XM6 specification explicitly includes a case; the CH720N specification list does not.
Noise and ambient features named by Sony Ambient Sound mode; dual noise sensors; app-adjustable ambient settings; Adaptive Sound Control Ambient Sound; Adaptive Noise Cancelling optimizer Both provide selectable listening modes, but these pages do not quantify a head-to-head ANC winner.

Which model is the WH-1000XM6?

“WH-1000XM headphones” can refer to several generations. Sony’s current US catalog lists the WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000XM5 as distinct products. Features, weight, battery ratings, included accessories and codec support can change between generations, so an article or store listing that says only “WH-1000XM” is incomplete for a buying decision. The premium model used throughout this comparison is specifically the WH-1000XM6.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a listing says XM5, XM4 or another generation, read that model’s own specification page rather than transferring the XM6 figures to it. The name family indicates the product line; it does not guarantee identical hardware.

Weight and day-long wear

Why the CH720N is the lighter choice

Sony lists the WH-CH720N at approximately 192 g (with 192.78 g also shown on its specification page). Sony describes it as “Sony’s lightest Wireless Noise-canceling headband ever.” That sentence is Sony’s product positioning, not an independent comfort test, but the listed mass is still substantially lower than the XM6 figure.

What the XM6’s weight implies

Sony lists the WH-1000XM6 at approximately 8.96 oz, or about 254 g. The difference is roughly 62 g compared with the CH720N’s approximately 192 g. Weight is not the only determinant of comfort: clamp force, pad shape, head size, glasses and heat all matter, and the supplied specifications do not measure those factors. Nevertheless, people who wear headphones for long study sessions, travel days or extended calls have a straightforward reason to start with the CH720N: it carries less mass on the head according to Sony’s figures.

Choose the XM6 despite the added weight when its additional features, codec choices or included case matter more than minimizing mass. No independent comfort comparison is established by the manufacturer pages cited here.

Battery life: how the ratings should be read

WH-CH720N rating

Sony rates the CH720N for up to 35 hours of music playback with noise cancelling on and up to 50 hours with noise cancelling off. “Up to” is important: playback time changes with volume, Bluetooth codec, temperature, call use and other settings. The figures are maximum manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee for every listening pattern.

WH-1000XM6 rating

Sony rates the XM6 for up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with noise cancelling off. On Sony’s stated numbers, the CH720N has a five-hour advantage with NC enabled and a ten-hour advantage with NC disabled.

Which battery difference matters in practice?

For frequent charging, either rating may be sufficient for a normal workweek, but the CH720N gives more reserve between charges on paper. If you regularly take long flights or work away from outlets, compare the NC-on figures because that is the more demanding and more relevant mode for many trips. Treat both sets of numbers as conditions-dependent specifications rather than independent endurance tests.

Bluetooth codecs and source-device compatibility

CH720N: SBC and AAC

Sony lists SBC and AAC for the WH-CH720N. These cover common Bluetooth use across phones, tablets and computers, but the exact codec selected is negotiated by the source device and operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

XM6: SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3

The XM6 specification adds LDAC and LC3 to SBC and AAC. LDAC can be useful with a compatible source and compatible settings; LC3 is another listed format that depends on an appropriate source implementation. Owning a headphone that lists a codec does not force a phone or computer to use it. Check the source device’s Bluetooth settings, operating-system support and any quality or battery options before treating the extra formats as a benefit.

Do the codec listings prove better sound?

No. Codec support describes compatibility, not a controlled measurement of sound quality. The available Sony pages do not establish an independent, head-to-head sound comparison between these two models. Select the XM6 for codec flexibility when you have a source that can use LDAC or LC3; do not assume the presence of those names alone guarantees an audible improvement in every setup.

Multipoint and switching between two devices

Sony’s WH-CH720N product FAQ says the headset supports multipoint connection to two devices. Sony also lists multipoint for the XM6. This is useful when, for example, one device is a phone and the other is a laptop: music can come from one while calls or notifications arrive from the other, subject to the behavior of the devices and applications involved.

Multipoint is not the same as connecting to an unlimited number of sources, and it does not guarantee seamless switching in every app. Pair the headset with both devices, enable the relevant connection option if the Sony software requests it, and verify your phone and computer audio settings. If one device monopolizes the connection, disconnect it temporarily or stop its active Bluetooth audio session before troubleshooting the second device.

Noise cancelling and ambient listening features

What Sony documents for the CH720N

Sony lists an Ambient Sound mode for the CH720N and describes dual noise sensors. Its product information says ambient settings can be adjusted in the Sony | Sound Connect app and names Adaptive Sound Control as a supported feature. These controls let you choose between reducing outside sound and allowing more of it through, but the documentation does not provide a quantified attenuation figure.

  • CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
  • ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.

What Sony documents for the XM6

Sony lists Ambient Sound and an Adaptive Noise Cancelling optimizer for the XM6. The optimizer naming indicates an adaptive control feature, not a published score against the CH720N.

How to choose without an independent ANC test

If your decision depends on subway rumble, aircraft noise or office voices, recognize the evidence boundary: the cited specifications establish supported modes, not which headset blocks more sound in a controlled comparison. Use fit, return policy and the exact regional model listing as practical safeguards. Do not treat a feature label such as “optimizer” or “dual noise sensors” as a measured performance ranking.

Wired listening, passive use and included accessories

Both headphones have a stereo mini-jack and list passive operation. That gives you a cable option for an airplane seat-back system, a computer without Bluetooth or situations where you want to preserve wireless battery. A wired connection does not by itself establish identical behavior: controls, microphones and noise-control functions can depend on whether the headset is powered, so check the manual for the mode you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s XM6 specification explicitly lists a carrying case, connection cable and USB cable. The CH720N specification lists a connection cable and USB cable but does not list a case. “Not listed” is different from a universal claim that no retailer bundle can include one; check the package contents for your region and seller.

Price, value and what “paying more” buys

Sony’s pages establish the products and their specifications, but prices and promotions change by country, retailer and date. There is therefore no permanent price difference that can be quoted responsibly. Check the current price for the exact model and compare it with the features you will actually use rather than assuming the premium family name automatically represents better value.

Include practical ownership costs in the comparison. If you need a protective case for the CH720N, price a compatible case when comparing bundles; Sony’s cited CH720N specification does not list one, while the XM6 specification does. Conversely, if you do not use LDAC or LC3 and your source devices only use SBC or AAC, the XM6’s extra codec entries may have little value to you. A lower purchase price can be the better deal when the lighter chassis and longer rated runtime match your routine.

  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
  • ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.

Live prices can also change the recommendation. At a small difference, the XM6’s case and codec flexibility may be easier to justify. At a large difference, the CH720N’s weight and battery advantages may leave more budget for accessories or a replacement cable. Recheck the seller, warranty terms, color and exact model number before ordering.

Setup and buying checks

  1. Confirm the complete model code on the box and listing. “WH-1000XM” alone does not tell you whether you are buying an XM6, XM5 or an older generation.
  2. Check your phone, tablet and computer’s supported Bluetooth codecs. The XM6 cannot add LDAC or LC3 support to a source that lacks it.
  3. For multipoint, pair both devices, enable the Sony connection option if prompted, and test a music pause-and-call handoff before relying on it for work.
  4. Open Sony | Sound Connect for the CH720N if you want to adjust Ambient Sound settings or Adaptive Sound Control.
  5. Review package contents in your region. The XM6 page names a carrying case; the cited CH720N page names connection and USB cables but not a case.
  6. Compare the NC-on battery figures when planning travel, and remember that volume, codec, temperature and call use can reduce the “up to” rating.
  7. Use a retailer return policy if comfort, sound or noise blocking is decisive. Sony’s specification pages do not provide controlled head-to-head results for those factors.

Which one fits common buying priorities?

Choose the WH-CH720N when weight and battery are central

  • You want the lower listed weight: approximately 192 g versus the XM6’s approximately 254 g.
  • You value Sony’s longer maximum battery ratings: up to 35 hours with NC on and up to 50 hours with NC off.
  • SBC and AAC cover your source devices, so LDAC and LC3 are not required.
  • You want ambient controls, Adaptive Sound Control and multipoint without moving to the premium model’s specification set.

Choose the WH-1000XM6 when features and accessories justify it

  • Your source devices can use LDAC or LC3 and you want those additional listed codec options.
  • You prefer the XM6 feature set, including its listed Adaptive Noise Cancelling optimizer.
  • A carrying case in the stated box contents is important for commuting or travel.
  • You accept the higher listed weight and shorter maximum battery ratings in exchange for the premium model’s broader specification.

When neither specification decides the purchase

If your main question is which sounds better, blocks more noise or feels more comfortable, these Sony pages do not answer it with independent comparative measurements. Those decisions depend on fit, listening preferences, source hardware and real-world conditions. Consider a retailer’s return terms and test the exact model you intend to keep rather than inferring performance from the family name or codec list.

Is the WH-1000XM6 worth paying more for?

There is no durable yes-or-no answer without a live price and your priorities. Sony’s published specifications show what the premium model adds: LDAC and LC3 alongside SBC and AAC, a listed carrying case, Bluetooth 5.3 rather than 5.2, and its documented adaptive noise-control feature. They also show trade-offs: the XM6 is listed at approximately 254 g and rated for up to 30 hours with NC on, compared with approximately 192 g and up to 35 hours for the CH720N.

The XM6 is easier to justify when you will use its additional codec support, value the included case or specifically want its premium feature set. The CH720N is easier to justify when lower weight, longer rated battery life and basic codec compatibility matter more. Because prices and promotions change by country and date, compare the current price in your market against the value of those concrete differences rather than relying on a permanent price gap.

Regional and model-checking checklist

  1. Confirm the full model number: WH-CH720N or WH-1000XM6. Do not rely on a listing that says only “WH-1000XM.”
  2. Open the Sony specification page for your country. The figures cited here come from Sony Canada for the CH720N and Sony USA for the XM6, accessed in 2026.
  3. Check the package-contents line if a carrying case matters; Sony explicitly lists one for the XM6, while the CH720N specification list cited here does not.
  4. Verify that your phone, tablet, computer or music player supports any codec you expect to use, especially LDAC or LC3.
  5. Compare the NC-on battery rating for travel planning, and remember that “up to” figures vary with settings and conditions.
  6. Use the Sony | Sound Connect app where supported to adjust the CH720N’s ambient settings and Adaptive Sound Control.
  7. For sound, ANC or comfort claims, look for independent controlled testing or rely on a return policy; the manufacturer specifications alone do not rank the two models.

Bottom line

The WH-CH720N is the practical choice for a lighter headset and longer Sony-rated battery life. The WH-1000XM6 is the premium choice for broader listed codec support and a carrying case, with a higher listed weight and shorter maximum runtime. Decide by naming the exact XM generation, matching codecs to your source devices and weighing those documented trade-offs against the current price in your region.

How long does the WH-CH720N battery last?

Sony rates it for up to 35 hours of music playback with noise cancelling on and up to 50 hours with noise cancelling off. Actual time varies with volume, codec, temperature, calls and other settings.

Can the WH-CH720N connect to two devices at once?

Yes. Sony’s product FAQ says the CH720N supports multipoint connection to two devices. Pair both sources and verify their Bluetooth audio settings; switching behavior can vary by app and operating system.

Does the WH-1000XM6 support multipoint?

Yes. Sony lists multipoint for the XM6 as well. Multipoint means two connected devices, not unlimited simultaneous sources, and an active audio session can affect switching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the WH-1000XM6 worth the extra cost?

It depends on the live price and your priorities. The XM6 may justify a premium if you can use LDAC or LC3, want the listed carrying case or prefer its documented adaptive noise-control feature. The CH720N may be better value when low weight, longer rated battery life and SBC/AAC compatibility matter more.

Does the XM6 sound better because it supports LDAC?

Not automatically. LDAC support describes a compatible transmission option, not a controlled sound-quality result. Your source device and settings must support LDAC, and the Sony pages do not establish an independent sound comparison.

Does either model include a carrying case?

Sony’s XM6 specification explicitly lists a carrying case, connection cable and USB cable. The cited CH720N specification lists a connection cable and USB cable but does not list a case; regional bundles can differ, so check the seller’s package-contents line.

Are the XM6 and XM5 the same headphones?

No. Sony lists the WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000XM5 as separate models. Weight, battery, codecs and accessories can differ by generation, so confirm the complete model number before buying.
