At the prices reported in the U.S. on October 6, 2026, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is the better deal: Tom’s Guide listed it at $198, compared with $378 for the newer WH-1000XM6. That is a $180 difference, and the publication gave its value recommendation to the XM5. The XM6 may make sense if its newer noise-cancelling and call hardware or Bluetooth 5.3 and LC3 support are worth that premium to you. These are time-sensitive deal prices, not guaranteed live offers.
Which is the better deal, Sony WH-1000XM6 or WH-1000XM5?
For value at the reported prices, choose the WH-1000XM5. Tom’s Guide’s October 6, 2026 U.S. deal coverage listed the XM5 at $198, down from $399, and the XM6 at $378, down from $459. The $180 gap buys the XM6’s newer features, but the listed prices do not make it the stronger bargain for most shoppers focused on cost. Tom’s Guide described both prices as all-time lows seen by its author; that is the publication’s characterization of its deal reporting, not a promise of a permanent market price. Is the XM6 worth paying $180 more for?
That depends on whether you value its updated noise-cancelling and call hardware and newer Bluetooth support enough to pay the premium. Sony says the XM6 uses its QN3 processor, which is seven times faster than the QN1 in the XM5, and that it optimizes 12 microphones in real time. Those are Sony’s manufacturer claims, not independent measurements of how much better the XM6 cancels noise or handles calls in everyday use. Sony Australia’s XM6 launch release, May 16, 2025

The available evidence does not establish a quantified real-world noise-cancelling improvement, so the processor-speed figure should not be read as a percentage or a guarantee that the XM6 will sound quieter in every setting. If that upgrade is your reason to spend more, compare the headphones in the environments you care about and use a return window if available.

Bluetooth 5.3 and LC3
The XM6 adds LC3 to Sony’s listed codec support and uses Bluetooth 5.3 rather than the XM5’s 5.2. That is a specification difference, not a promise that every phone or computer will deliver a benefit: the source device and its implementation also matter.

The official music-playback ratings are tied: up to 30 hours with noise cancelling enabled and up to 40 hours with it disabled for both models. Battery life therefore does not distinguish these two options on Sony’s published figures.

Weight and fit
Sony lists the XM6 at approximately 8.96 oz and the XM5 at approximately 8.82 oz, making the XM6 slightly heavier by those figures. Tom’s Guide suggests that buyers with larger ears might prefer the XM5, but that is reviewer guidance rather than a fit guarantee. Try the fit if possible, and check the return policy if you are unsure.

Which one should you buy?
- Choose the WH-1000XM5 if the reported $198 offer is still available from a seller and under return terms you accept. At the October 6 snapshot, it cost $180 less while sharing the same official battery ratings.
- Choose the WH-1000XM6 if you specifically want its newer QN3 and microphone system or its Bluetooth 5.3 and LC3 support, and those features justify the extra cost for your devices and use.
- Wait or reassess if the live prices differ substantially from the reported snapshot. Compare the current delivered totals and seller terms rather than relying on a dated deal headline.
