Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want Sony’s newer noise-canceling processor and expanded microphone system. Choose the WH-1000XM5 if it costs meaningfully less where you shop and those hardware changes are not worth the premium to you. Sony rates both for the same maximum music playback time: 30 hours with noise canceling on and 40 hours with it off.
What changed from the XM5 to the XM6?
Noise-canceling processor and microphones
Sony’s May 15, 2025 UK launch release identifies the XM6’s HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 and 12 microphones, compared with eight microphones on the XM5. Sony says the QN3 processes seven times faster than its predecessor and describes the result as a “dramatic leap” in noise canceling and sound quality. Bluetooth and listed codecs
Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3 and SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 support for the XM6. Its XM5 specification page lists Bluetooth 5.2 and SBC, AAC, and LDAC. A codec appearing on a headphone’s specification does not by itself establish compatibility with a particular phone, computer, app, or wireless feature; check the specifications for the device you plan to use.

Which model should you buy?
Choose the WH-1000XM6 if its upgrades matter to you
The XM6 is the straightforward pick if you want Sony’s newer QN3 noise-canceling hardware, its 12-microphone system, or its newer listed Bluetooth version and LC3 codec. Sony’s launch announcement describes improved noise canceling and sound, but the available evidence here does not independently quantify how audible those changes are in everyday use.
Choose the WH-1000XM5 if the price gap is more important
The XM5 remains a reasonable value choice if your retailer sells it for substantially less and you do not think the XM6’s listed hardware changes justify paying extra. Its published maximum battery rating matches the XM6’s. Compare the live prices and availability in your region before deciding.
