Choose Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) when its simpler feature set and lower launch tier fit your budget, or choose the premium Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if USB-C lossless audio and Cinema Mode matter to you. “Bose QuietComfort” is not one product, and the Bose tier must be identified before this comparison is meaningful. Official specifications establish the feature and battery differences below, but they do not establish an independent winner for sound, comfort or noise cancellation.
Start with the exact models
The current Sony model in this comparison is the WH-1000XM6. Bose has two relevant products: QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), the base model announced in August 2026, and the higher-tier QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), announced in September 2025. The Ultra is not another name for the base QuietComfort; it has different audio modes, battery conditions and connectivity features.

Sony WH-1000XM6
Sony describes the WH-1000XM6 as a closed, over-ear noise-cancelling headphone. Its support specification lists Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint pairing and SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 audio formats. Sony rates continuous music playback at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling enabled or up to 40 hours with noise cancelling disabled. The stated charging time is about 3.5 hours. The listed box contents are a carrying case, connection cable and USB cable.
Sony’s product copy says its HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 is “7x faster than the QN1” used in the WH-1000XM5 and processes 12 microphones in real time. That is a Sony product claim, not an independently measured comparison.

Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen)
Bose announced the second-generation QuietComfort Headphones on August 6, 2026. The U.S. announcement gave a $359 launch price, an August 8 preorder date and August 13 shipping. It introduced Bose TrueSpatial technology and three Bose Immersive Audio modes—Still, Motion and Cinema—that Bose had previously reserved for its Ultra line. The announcement also lists Bluetooth Core 5.4 multipoint connectivity.
Bose’s support comparison lists USB-C audio for this new QuietComfort generation. Bose also says the SC and Club variants have identical headphones; the stated distinction is the case type. If you are buying one of those variants, verify the exact package rather than assuming the headphone hardware differs.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
Bose announced the Ultra (2nd Gen) on September 10, 2025, at a $449 launch price, with availability beginning October 2, 2025. It is the premium alternative in this matchup. Bose highlights USB-C lossless audio, Cinema Mode, adaptive noise-cancelling updates and Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint.

Battery life: compare the listening modes, not just the headline number
The XM6 has two straightforward Sony figures: 30 hours with noise cancelling on and 40 hours with it off. Sony does not present an additional listening-mode penalty in the cited specification.

The Ultra (2nd Gen) varies more because Immersive Audio changes the operating condition. Bose rates it at 30 hours with noise cancelling on and Immersive Audio off, 23 hours with both noise cancelling and Immersive Audio on, and 45 hours with both features off. Bose’s quick-charge statement—up to 2.5 hours of playback from a 15-minute charge—also applies to the noise-cancelling-on, Immersive-Audio-off condition.
Bose did not state a battery figure in the cited launch and support material for the base QuietComfort (2nd Gen). Do not fill that gap by borrowing the Ultra’s number or by assuming the two products have identical endurance.

What this means in practice
- If you leave noise cancelling on all day, the Sony and Ultra both carry a 30-hour manufacturer claim, but only the Ultra figure is explicitly tied to Immersive Audio being off.
- If you use immersive modes frequently, the Ultra’s stated maximum falls to 23 hours under the combined NC-on/Immersive-on condition.
- If you mainly listen without noise cancelling, Sony states 40 hours and Bose states 45 hours for the Ultra, both with their respective conditions.
- None of these figures predicts your exact result; volume, wireless conditions, codec, calls and processing settings affect runtime.
Bluetooth, codecs and wired listening
Choose Sony for the most explicitly listed codec options
Sony lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 alongside Bluetooth 5.3. LDAC can be relevant to compatible Android phones and other sources that offer the codec; AAC is commonly used by Apple devices; LC3 is associated with newer Bluetooth LE Audio implementations. The practical benefit depends on whether your phone, computer and operating system support the same codec. A codec listed on the headphone specification does not force a source device to use it.
XM6 multipoint lets you keep two compatible source devices connected according to Sony’s specification. Check the device behavior you need—such as switching between a laptop and phone—rather than assuming every application will hand off identically.
Choose either Bose model for newer Bluetooth version numbering and USB-C audio options
Bose lists Bluetooth Core 5.4 multipoint for the base QuietComfort (2nd Gen) and Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint for the Ultra (2nd Gen). The cited Bose material does not provide a codec list comparable to Sony’s SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 list, so a codec-by-codec winner cannot be established from these specifications.

Bose lists USB-C audio for the base second-generation QuietComfort and USB-C lossless audio for the Ultra (2nd Gen). That distinction matters if you want a digital wired connection from a compatible computer, tablet or phone. Confirm that your source supports USB audio output and that the cable and operating system recognize the headphones; a USB-C connector alone does not guarantee lossless playback from every device.

TrueSpatial on the base QuietComfort (2nd Gen)
Bose says TrueSpatial adds three Immersive Audio listening modes to the base second-generation QuietComfort: Still, Motion and Cinema. Still is intended for stationary listening, Motion is designed for movement, and Cinema is aimed at a theater-like presentation. The existence of the modes is documented by Bose; whether you prefer their spatial effect is a personal listening judgment.
Ultra (2nd Gen) Cinema Mode and Immersive Audio
The Ultra includes Cinema Mode and other Immersive Audio processing. Bose’s battery figures show the trade-off clearly: turning Immersive Audio on with noise cancelling reduces the stated maximum from 30 to 23 hours. If you value spatial presentation for films, that shorter mode-specific runtime may be acceptable; if you want the longest sessions, leave Immersive Audio off.
Sony’s processing and adaptive controls
Sony markets the XM6’s QN3 processor and 12-microphone processing as improvements for noise cancellation, sound quality and call clarity. Those benefits are claims from Sony’s product page. The cited material does not provide a neutral laboratory comparison against either Bose model, so the processor description should not be read as proof that Sony sounds better or blocks more noise.
Noise cancellation, sound and comfort: what can—and cannot—be concluded
Fit, head shape, glasses, hair, ear-pad seal, music choice and the noise in your environment all affect the experience. A headphone that performs well in a steady airplane cabin may behave differently against voices, keyboard clicks or train noise. Comfort also changes with clamp force, pad heat, glasses and how long you wear the set.

The official material available for these models gives specifications and brand claims, not a controlled, independent head-to-head test. Therefore, this comparison cannot honestly declare the XM6, base QuietComfort (2nd Gen) or Ultra (2nd Gen) the objective winner for ANC, sound quality, microphone performance or comfort.
Use return policies, in-store demonstrations or a neutral test that measures the exact current models if those subjective traits determine your purchase. Keep the test conditions consistent: identical tracks, the same source, matched volume, the same noise location and enough wear time to expose pressure or heat problems.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6 when these priorities match you
- You want the broadest explicitly listed codec support, including LDAC and LC3.
- You use two devices and want Sony’s listed multipoint capability.
- You prefer a simple battery comparison: 30 hours with noise cancelling on or 40 hours off, according to Sony.
- You want Sony’s closed over-ear design and are comfortable paying the current price shown by Sony’s U.S. listing when you check it.
- You are willing to treat Sony’s QN3 and microphone claims as manufacturer statements rather than independent performance proof.
Buy Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) when these priorities match you
- You want the base Bose tier rather than the Ultra’s premium feature set.
- TrueSpatial modes—Still, Motion and Cinema—are more useful to you than Sony’s listed codec range.
- You need USB-C audio and Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint as listed by Bose.
- The model’s live price is close to, or below, its $359 U.S. launch positioning after you verify current availability.
- You are choosing between SC and Club packaging and only need to decide which case type suits you, since Bose says the headphones themselves are identical.
Buy Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) when these priorities match you
- You specifically want USB-C lossless audio.
- Cinema Mode and Immersive Audio are reasons to choose Bose’s higher tier.
- You value Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint and Bose’s adaptive noise-cancelling updates.
- You accept that the stated battery life changes with Immersive Audio: 30 hours with NC on and Immersive Audio off, but 23 hours with both enabled.
- The Ultra’s current price makes sense for those features rather than simply because it carries the word “Ultra.”
Consider the previous Sony WH-1000XM5 only as a price-led alternative
Sony’s U.S. product result displayed the earlier WH-1000XM5 at $198 when retrieved. That may be a temporary offer, not a permanent price, and it is not the current Sony model in this comparison. Consider it only after checking live stock, warranty, condition and the features you would give up compared with the XM6. Do not assume a discount remains available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the decision step by step
- Name the Bose tier. Write down “QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen)” or “QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen).” If a listing only says “Bose QuietComfort,” verify the generation and whether it is the Ultra before comparing prices.
- Check your source devices. For Sony, confirm whether your phone or computer supports the codec you want, especially LDAC or LC3. For Bose USB-C audio, confirm that your source supports USB audio over its port.
- Set your listening mode. Estimate how often you will use noise cancelling and, for Bose, Immersive Audio. Compare Sony’s 30/40-hour claims with the Ultra’s mode-specific 30/23/45-hour claims rather than using one generic “battery life” number.
- Rank the features you will use weekly. Put codecs, USB-C audio, spatial modes, multipoint, case size, call use and wired listening in order. Ignore a feature that you will never enable.
- Check the live price and return terms. Sony’s displayed $459.99, Bose’s launch prices and the older XM5 result are time-sensitive. Compare current prices in the same region and confirm tax, warranty, seller and return window.
- Test fit before committing. Wear the headphones for at least 30 minutes if possible, with your usual glasses and listening position. Listen to speech, bass-heavy music and quiet passages at a comfortable, matched volume.
- Keep the exact model in your records. Save the product name, generation, variant and firmware information. This prevents support or accessory confusion later, particularly between base QuietComfort, Ultra and SC/Club packages.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing the base QuietComfort with Ultra features
USB-C lossless audio and Cinema Mode are documented for the Ultra (2nd Gen). TrueSpatial modes are documented for the base QuietComfort (2nd Gen) as well as the Ultra line. Check the product tier before treating a feature as universal across Bose QuietComfort headphones.
Treating launch prices as current prices
The Bose figures are launch announcements, and Sony’s displayed prices were retrieved listings. Promotions, regional taxes, stock and seller change over time. Use the figures as tier context, then verify the live listing in your country.

Reading battery claims without their conditions
“Up to 23 hours” for the Ultra refers to noise cancelling and Immersive Audio both being on; “up to 45 hours” refers to both being off. Sony’s 30- and 40-hour figures likewise depend on noise-cancelling state. A fair comparison keeps those conditions beside every number.
Assuming a newer Bluetooth number guarantees better sound
Bluetooth 5.4 versus 5.3 does not by itself prove better audio quality, stronger noise cancellation or longer battery life. Device compatibility, codec support, software and fit still matter. Compare the functions you actually need.
Calling a brand claim an independent test
Sony’s QN3 and 12-microphone statements and Bose’s feature descriptions explain what each company promises. They do not substitute for a controlled test of the exact models. Phrase your own conclusion as a priority-based choice unless you have neutral measurements.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the clearest choice for a buyer who values Sony’s listed codec breadth, multipoint and a 30-hour noise-cancelling battery claim. The base Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) is the relevant Bose option when TrueSpatial modes, USB-C audio and a lower launch tier matter more than the Ultra’s premium features. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) is the specialist choice for USB-C lossless audio, Cinema Mode and Immersive Audio, provided you accept its mode-dependent battery figures.
