Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want longer advertised battery life, wider Bluetooth codec support and Sony’s app-based controls. Choose Apple’s AirPods Max 2 if you use Apple devices and value features such as automatic ecosystem integration, Adaptive Audio, Personalized Spatial Audio and USB-C lossless audio. Neither is the universal winner. Comfort, your devices and the price in your country should decide the final purchase.

What this comparison covers

This is a comparison of the Sony WH-1000XM6 and the current Apple AirPods Max 2. Model identity matters because AirPods Max has existed in several materially different versions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The original 2020 AirPods Max used a Lightning connector.
  • Apple also sells a 2024 USB-C AirPods Max generation that is separate from Max 2.
  • AirPods Max 2 is Apple’s current model and the one discussed here.

A review of the 2020 or 2024 headphones is not automatically a test of Max 2. Check the generation named in any article, product listing or photograph before applying its conclusions.

Quick verdict

What matters most Better fit Why
Longest manufacturer-rated ANC battery life Sony WH-1000XM6 Up to 30 hours with noise canceling enabled, compared with Apple’s up to 20 hours with Active Noise Cancellation enabled.
Bluetooth codec choice Sony WH-1000XM6 Sony lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3.
Apple-device integration AirPods Max 2 Apple lists ecosystem-oriented features including Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Personalized Spatial Audio.
USB-C wired audio AirPods Max 2 Apple specifies lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over USB-C.
Published weight transparency AirPods Max 2 Apple publishes 386.2 grams including cushions; the Sony specification material considered here does not establish an official weight figure.
Best choice for a mixed-device household Usually Sony Sony’s listed Bluetooth formats are broadly usable across phones, tablets and computers. Your specific devices still determine which codecs are available.

Battery and connectivity figures in this table are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled head-to-head laboratory test. Actual runtime and listening results vary with volume, codec, call use, temperature and other settings.

Battery life: Sony has the endurance advantage on paper

Sony WH-1000XM6

Sony’s current WH-1000XM6 specifications rate the headphones for up to 30 hours with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with noise canceling off. Those are maximum manufacturer figures. Frequent calls, high volume, intensive wireless features and environmental conditions can reduce the time between charges.

AirPods Max 2

Apple’s AirPods Max 2 technical specifications state: “Up to 20 hours of listening time on a single charge with Active Noise Cancellation enabled.” That is Apple’s published rating for the current model. It is 10 hours less than Sony’s ANC-on rating, so travelers who cannot charge regularly have a clear specification-based reason to favor Sony.

How to interpret the gap

The figures describe different manufacturers’ test methods and should not be treated as a controlled comparison. They are still useful for planning. A 10-hour difference can determine whether a pair lasts through a long-haul flight, several workdays or a week of commuting without a top-up. If you normally charge every night, battery capacity may matter less than fit or device integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not transfer the test conditions from Apple’s separate 2024 USB-C AirPods Max 1 specification page to Max 2. That older page discusses pre-production units, 50-percent volume and ANC enabled; those conditions are not a Max 2 test result.

Bluetooth, codecs and USB-C audio

Sony’s listed wireless formats

Sony lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 for the WH-1000XM6. SBC and AAC are common across consumer devices. LDAC can carry higher-bitrate Bluetooth audio when both the source device and the headphones support it and the setting is enabled. LC3 is associated with newer Bluetooth LE Audio implementations, but support depends on the transmitting device and operating system.

A codec listed on the headphone specification does not guarantee that every phone, tablet or laptop will use it. The source device, operating-system settings and connection mode all affect the active codec. A device that falls back to SBC or AAC is still compatible; it simply is not using every format Sony advertises.

AirPods Max 2’s Bluetooth and USB-C distinction

Apple specifies Bluetooth 5.3 for AirPods Max 2 and separately specifies lossless and ultra-low-latency audio via USB-C. These are different connection paths. Bluetooth audio is wireless and codec-dependent. USB-C audio is a wired feature intended for compatible devices and applications where lossless playback or very low latency is important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not describe USB-C lossless audio as a Bluetooth codec. It is a wired USB-C capability. Conversely, buying a USB-C cable does not turn every Bluetooth source into a lossless wireless connection.

Which connection approach suits you?

  • Choose Sony if you deliberately use LDAC or want the widest list of Bluetooth formats between the two models.
  • Choose AirPods Max 2 if your priority is a USB-C wired connection for lossless music or low-latency work and you use compatible Apple hardware.
  • Choose based on your source device if you mainly listen from a computer or phone that supports only a subset of the listed formats.

Apple ecosystem features versus cross-device flexibility

Why AirPods Max 2 appeals to Apple-device owners

Apple lists Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio and USB-C lossless audio for AirPods Max 2. Independent comparison coverage also identifies automatic switching and broader Apple-device integration as strengths of the AirPods Max family, although some of that testing concerned an earlier AirPods Max generation rather than Max 2. Treat the ecosystem advantage as a platform fit, not as proof that every Max 2 behavior has been independently tested in every Apple configuration.

If your daily devices are an iPhone, iPad and Mac, using Apple’s account and operating-system features can be more valuable than a longer battery rating. The benefit is greatest when you frequently move between those devices and want the headphones to behave as part of the same system rather than as a generic Bluetooth accessory.

Why Sony is the safer mixed-device choice

Sony’s listed codec support and app controls make the WH-1000XM6 a more conventional Bluetooth purchase for households that combine different phone and computer platforms. You should still verify support for your preferred codec on each source device. The practical advantage is that you are not dependent on one manufacturer’s ecosystem for the core wireless connection.

Noise cancellation, sound and comfort: no universal winner

Noise cancellation

Both headphones are premium over-ear active-noise-canceling models. The available comparative opinions do not establish a universal winner for every environment. Cabin rumble, train noise, voices and office sound can produce different impressions, and the seal around your ears is as important as the electronics.

One Tom’s Guide comparison tested the WH-1000XM6 against the earlier AirPods Max generation. Its observations can provide context about the product families, but they are not a controlled AirPods Max 2 test. A March 2026 Cinco Días comparison explicitly covers AirPods Max 2 and WH-1000XM6, but it remains secondary editorial coverage rather than a standardized laboratory result. Use those reviews as attributed opinions, not as a guarantee for your ears.

Sound quality

Sound preference is personal. A reviewer’s favorite tuning may not match your music, hearing, equalizer settings or fit. If possible, buy from a seller with a return period, listen with your usual sources and test familiar recordings at a safe volume. Do not assume that a codec, feature list or reviewer ranking predicts your preference.

Comfort and fit

The AirPods Max 2 specification lists a weight of 386.2 grams including cushions. The Sony official specification material available for this comparison does not establish a verified weight figure, so an exact numerical weight comparison would be unsupported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weight is only one comfort variable. Clamp force, headband pressure, cushion shape, glasses, hair and ear size can change the experience during a two-hour flight. The heavier published figure for AirPods Max 2 is relevant if you are sensitive to neck fatigue, but it cannot tell you whether the Sony will fit better without a verified Sony figure and a personal wear test.

Price and value depend on country and date

Model and reference Published figure How to use it
Sony WH-1000XM6 US$450 list-price context reported by What Hi-Fi? in 2026 A review/list-price reference, not a live discount or universal price.
Sony WH-1000XM6 in Australia A$699.95 SRP in Sony Australia’s May 2025 launch announcement An Australian launch-era recommended price, not a current global price.
Apple AirPods Max 2 US$549 list-price context reported by What Hi-Fi? in 2026 A review/list-price reference, not a live retail quote.

These figures are not interchangeable: one is Australian, the others are US references, and dates differ. Taxes, currency movement, promotions and regional availability can change the result. Check the current price in your country before declaring either model the better value. A higher purchase price can still be rational if USB-C lossless audio or Apple integration replaces another device in your workflow; a lower price can matter more if you primarily need reliable ANC and long battery life.

Choose by your actual listening pattern

Pick the Sony WH-1000XM6 when these statements describe you

  • You regularly travel or work away from outlets and want the longer advertised ANC-on endurance.
  • You use a mixture of phone, tablet and computer platforms.
  • You want LDAC or LC3 listed alongside SBC and AAC.
  • You prefer controlling headphone settings through Sony’s app rather than relying mainly on Apple’s ecosystem.
  • You want to minimize the risk that a feature depends on owning several devices from one platform.

Pick AirPods Max 2 when these statements describe you

  • Your primary devices are Apple products and seamless switching or integration is central to your routine.
  • You want Apple’s listed Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness or Personalized Spatial Audio features.
  • You need USB-C wired lossless or ultra-low-latency audio on compatible equipment.
  • You are comfortable with Apple’s 20-hour ANC-enabled manufacturer rating and can charge regularly.
  • You have tried the fit and do not find the published 386.2-gram weight problematic.

When neither should be an automatic purchase

  • You cannot return headphones and have never tried the shape or clamp of either model.
  • You are shopping solely from an older review that does not identify AirPods Max 2.
  • You need a specific codec or USB-C workflow but have not checked whether your source device supports it.
  • You are comparing a regional launch price with a current sale price and treating them as equivalent.

How to verify the generation before buying

  1. Read the exact model name. It should say “Sony WH-1000XM6” or “Apple AirPods Max 2,” not merely “AirPods Max.”
  2. Check the connector description. A listing that emphasizes the 2020 Lightning model is not Max 2. A 2024 USB-C AirPods Max 1 listing is also a different generation.
  3. Match the specifications. Max 2’s current Apple specification includes 386.2 grams, Bluetooth 5.3 and USB-C lossless and ultra-low-latency audio.
  4. Check the publication date and tested model in reviews. A comparison can mention AirPods Max while actually testing the earlier generation.
  5. Confirm regional price and return terms. Reference prices from the US or Australia do not establish what you should pay locally.

Setup priorities after purchase

Sony WH-1000XM6

  1. Charge the headphones fully before judging battery performance.
  2. Pair them with each source device you intend to use.
  3. Check the Bluetooth codec shown by your source device; do not assume LDAC or LC3 is active simply because Sony lists it.
  4. Use Sony’s companion app to review available controls and sound settings.
  5. Test ANC with your normal travel or office noise, then check battery behavior over a full workday rather than extrapolating from a short session.

AirPods Max 2

  1. Pair with your primary Apple device and make sure the operating system is current enough to expose the features you plan to use.
  2. Test switching between your Apple devices in the situations where you actually work or listen.
  3. Try Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Personalized Spatial Audio individually so you know which features you prefer.
  4. For wired playback, connect through USB-C to compatible equipment and verify that the application recognizes the intended audio path.
  5. Measure your own charging routine against Apple’s up-to-20-hour ANC-enabled rating before relying on the headphones for long trips.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating specifications as a head-to-head test

Manufacturer battery figures establish what each company claims under its own conditions. They do not prove that one pair will last exactly 50 percent longer in your routine or that its ANC will remove more noise in every location.

Mistake: using the wrong AirPods Max review

Older coverage may describe the 2020 Lightning model or the 2024 USB-C Max 1. Confirm the generation before relying on battery, connector or feature conclusions.

Mistake: comparing unsupported weights

Apple publishes 386.2 grams including cushions for Max 2. The Sony official material used here does not provide a verified weight, so do not quote an exact Sony-versus-Apple weight difference from an unverified listing.

Mistake: treating a launch price as today’s price

The A$699.95 Sony Australia figure is a May 2025 Australian recommended price. The US$450 and US$549 figures are 2026 list-price context from What Hi-Fi?. None is a live offer for every market.

Bottom line: match the headphones to your ecosystem and routine

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the practical default for listeners who prioritize endurance, broad listed Bluetooth codec support and flexibility across devices. Its published battery ceiling is up to 30 hours with ANC on and up to 40 hours with ANC off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AirPods Max 2 is the more compelling choice for Apple-centered users who will actually use its ecosystem features and USB-C lossless or ultra-low-latency audio. Apple rates it for up to 20 hours with ANC enabled and lists a 386.2-gram weight including cushions.

If you are undecided, identify your source devices first, decide whether wired USB-C lossless audio matters, and try both fits if returns are available. Then compare current local prices—not launch or review-era references—and choose the model whose advantages you will use every week.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
