Choose the WH-1000XM5 if clear calls and newer Bluetooth hardware matter most. Choose the WH-1000XM4 if it is substantially cheaper, you prefer its established feature set, or its physical design suits your routine. Neither is the universal winner: noise-cancellation performance depends on the sound you are trying to block, and both are rated for the same maximum battery life with noise canceling enabled.
At a glance
| Priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent calls and meetings | WH-1000XM5 | RTINGS reports better microphone performance in its comparison, updated June 15, 2026. |
| Low price | WH-1000XM4 | Buy it when the live price is meaningfully below the XM5; prices and stock change by market. |
| Noise cancellation | Depends on the noise | Both provide substantial isolation. RTINGS says the XM5 has more difficulty with low bus-engine rumble and that its adaptive ANC cannot be disabled. |
| Battery with ANC on | Tie on the published rating | Sony rates both for up to 30 hours of music playback with noise canceling enabled. |
| Bluetooth version | WH-1000XM5 | Bluetooth 5.2 versus Bluetooth 5.0 in the XM4. The version difference alone does not guarantee a noticeable everyday advantage. |
What is the same
- Both are over-ear wireless headphones with active noise canceling.
- Both support SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs.
- Sony rates each for up to 30 hours of music playback with noise canceling on.
- Both include carrying cases in Sony’s listed specifications.
“Up to” is a manufacturer maximum under stated test conditions, not a promise of the runtime any individual listener will get. Volume, codec, temperature, wireless conditions and battery age can change actual results.
Where the WH-1000XM5 is the stronger choice
Calls and microphone use
RTINGS’ comparative testing reports better microphone performance from the XM5. If you regularly take phone calls, video meetings or voice messages in noisy places, that is the clearest evidence-based reason to pay more for it. It remains a reviewer comparison rather than a guarantee for every voice, device or environment.
Newer wireless hardware
Sony lists Bluetooth 5.2 for the XM5 and Bluetooth 5.0 for the XM4. The newer specification can be a useful tie-breaker for buyers who want the newer platform, but Bluetooth version numbers do not by themselves establish longer range, better sound or a dramatically different user experience.

- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
Battery when noise canceling is off
Sony lists up to 40 hours with noise canceling off for the XM5. This is a separate rated maximum from the 30-hour ANC-on figure and should not be treated as a typical listening guarantee.
Where the WH-1000XM4 can be the smarter buy
A meaningful price gap
The XM4 is the value choice only when its current local price is clearly lower than the XM5. Sony’s US pages showed an access-time snapshot of $349.99 for the XM4 and $299.99 for the XM5, an unusual reversal that demonstrates why those figures cannot be used as market-wide guidance. Check the price, stock and warranty in your own country at the time of purchase.

An already mature feature set
The XM4 still provides the core package most buyers want: over-ear ANC, LDAC, AAC and SBC support, and Sony’s 30-hour ANC-on rating. If you do not need the XM5’s reported microphone improvement or newer Bluetooth version, paying less for the XM4 can be rational.
Design and portability questions
Both Sony specification pages list a carrying case, but the reviewed material does not establish a fully sourced foldability advantage for either model. Confirm the physical design from current official product images or documentation if the way the headphones pack is decisive for you.

Noise cancellation: match the headphone to the noise
Do not assume the XM5 is categorically better at ANC. RTINGS reports significant ambient-sound isolation from both models, while finding that the XM5 has a harder time with low-frequency bus-engine rumble. RTINGS also notes that the XM5’s adaptive ANC system cannot be turned off. Your result can therefore differ between steady aircraft noise, voices in an office, traffic and low mechanical rumble.
- Mostly voices and general office noise: either model can provide substantial isolation; price and call quality become stronger deciding factors.
- Low bus or engine rumble: the XM4 may be preferable according to RTINGS’ comparison finding.
- You want manual control over adaptive behavior: account for RTINGS’ finding that XM5 adaptive ANC cannot be disabled.
Battery and charging details
| Model | Rated playback with ANC on | Other published figure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| WH-1000XM5 | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours with ANC off | Sony maximum ratings; real runtime varies. |
| WH-1000XM4 | Up to 30 hours | Sony’s retail page advertises 10 minutes of charging for up to 5 hours of playback | Quick-charge result and battery life are ideal-condition claims. |
The XM4 specification page also displays an unusual “up to 200 hours” ANC-off figure that conflicts with the product listing’s 30-hour statement. It should not be used as a normal listening expectation; the consistent comparison point is the 30-hour ANC-on rating.

Which one should you buy?
Pick the WH-1000XM5 when
- You make frequent calls and want the model with RTINGS’ better microphone result.
- You prefer Bluetooth 5.2 and the newer hardware platform.
- The XM5 is the same price as, or only slightly more expensive than, the XM4 where you live.
- You accept adaptive ANC that cannot be disabled and have no specific low-rumble requirement.
Pick the WH-1000XM4 when
- It is meaningfully cheaper after checking current local pricing.
- You are satisfied with the established feature set and do not prioritize call performance.
- Your main environment includes low bus or engine rumble, where RTINGS found the XM5 less effective.
- You have confirmed that its physical design and carrying arrangement work for your travel.
Before ordering
- Identify your main setting: calls, commuting, aircraft, office or home.
- Compare live prices, warranty terms and availability in your region rather than relying on an old US listing.
- Check the retailer’s return policy so you can evaluate fit, comfort and sound with your own devices.
- For a portability-sensitive purchase, verify the current official product images or specifications instead of assuming one model folds differently.
Verdict
The WH-1000XM5 is the safer recommendation for call-heavy use and for buyers who want Sony’s newer Bluetooth implementation. The WH-1000XM4 remains the better value when its price is substantially lower or when its noise-cancellation behavior better matches low-frequency travel noise. Compare the live local price and your actual listening environment before deciding.
