For steadier noise canceling on the Sony WH-1000XM5, turn off Adaptive Sound Control in Sony Sound Connect and select Noise Canceling manually. For sound, use the app’s equalizer to tune the frequency balance to your preference; try DSEE Extreme only if you want to compare its processing on compressed audio. Fit matters too: adjust the headphones until they sit snugly before judging either sound or isolation.
Set noise canceling to stay consistent
Open Sony Sound Connect, check Adaptive Sound Control, and turn it off if you want to choose a listening mode yourself. With Adaptive Sound Control enabled, the headphones can adjust Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound based on detected activity or location. Select Noise Canceling manually for a steady setting, or choose Ambient Sound when you want more surrounding sound admitted. Sony recommends disabling Adaptive Sound Control and selecting a mode manually when seeking maximum noise canceling. Sony Support explains Adaptive Sound Control and noise-canceling behavior.

Noise canceling reduces ambient sound; it does not guarantee silence. Sony says the headphones automatically measure wearing condition and environment to optimize noise-canceling characteristics. A loose fit, a quiet setting, or the type of noise can affect how strong the effect seems. If isolation seems weak, first readjust the fit and check that Noise Canceling—not Ambient Sound—is selected. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Help Guide covers wearing and noise-control operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

In Sound Connect, use Equalizer to change the sound’s frequency balance. Start with a preset or a neutral point, then make one adjustment at a time and compare familiar tracks at a consistent volume. The useful setting is the one you prefer, not a universally “best” curve: the result depends on your ears, music, and source. Sony lists equalizer customization for the WH-1000XM5, but available options may vary by model or app version, so use the controls actually shown in your app. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 product page describes Sound Connect features.

Decide whether to use DSEE Extreme
DSEE Extreme is an optional processing feature listed for supported WH-1000XM5 use. Sony describes DSEE processing as intended to enhance lower-quality compressed audio. Compare it on the compressed material you actually listen to, then keep it on only if you prefer the result. It is not a guaranteed improvement for every recording or source, and feature menus and behavior can vary with model and app version. Sony’s Sound Connect feature information outlines supported sound customization.
Change Sound Quality Mode if playback skips or gets noisy
If Bluetooth playback has noise or skips, Sound Quality Mode is a troubleshooting adjustment—not a general sound-quality upgrade. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 guidance, last modified February 3, 2022, recommends choosing according to both device and audio format:

Sony says choosing the appropriate mode can improve communication between the headphones and mobile device. The advice is from a 2022 support article, so menu labels or behavior may have changed in newer app versions. Read Sony’s WH-1000XM5 sound-quality and skipping guidance.

Before troubleshooting the app, put the headphones on and adjust the headband and earcups for a snug fit. Fit contributes to sound isolation, so a setting change cannot compensate for a poor seal. Use the noise-canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button to switch listening modes when you want to do so directly on the headphones; the Help Guide describes the physical controls and their operation.
