Amazon’s Labor Day-period price of $198 on the Sony WH-1000XM5 was roughly half off the headphones’ stated $400 list price, according to deal reports published in early September 2026. Those reports called it a record low. That is a publication claim, not a verified price history. The reports are also a month old, so check the live price before you buy.
What was reported
Three outlets covered the discount in the first week of September 2026. They list slightly different “before” prices, so the size of the saving depends on which one you use.

| Source | Date | Deal price | Stated prior price | Low-price claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TechRadar | Sept. 2, 2026 | $198 | $399.99 | Described as a lowest-ever price |
| What Hi-Fi? | Sept. 3, 2026 | Half price, per its headline | Not stated | Below the $248 previous low the publication had seen |
| PCWorld | Sept. 4, 2026 | $198 at Amazon | $400 | Described as a lowest-ever price |
The savings are about $200 in each case. Both $400 and $399.99 are the same list price, rounded differently.

Is it really the lowest price in a year?
Possibly, but nobody has shown it here. TechRadar and PCWorld called $198 a record low. What Hi-Fi? said it beat the $248 low it had previously tracked. Those are each outlet’s own assessments, and none of the coverage includes a twelve-month price chart. Treat “lowest in a year” as a credible signal rather than a confirmed fact. For a quick check, open the product’s price history on a tracker such as Keepa or CamelCamelCamel.

The $248 figure is useful context. It suggests the XM5 had already been discounted well below list before this sale. The September price cut about $50 further.
What you can’t assume today
- The $198 price may be gone. The reports are from September 2–4, and Labor Day discounts often end. This article can’t confirm Amazon’s live price, seller, stock or color options.
- Sony’s own price is a different number. Sony’s US product page showed $299.99, a $100 saving from $399.99, when a search result for it was crawled about three weeks before October 5. That is not an Amazon quote, and it may have changed.
- Check who sells it. Make sure the listing is “Ships from and sold by Amazon” or another seller you trust, and that it is the XM5, not another model.
Which model is this?
This deal covers the WH-1000XM5, not the newer WH-1000XM6. Sony describes the XM5 as a premium wireless noise-cancelling headphone and lists up to 30 hours of battery life on its product page. The year of that spec isn’t stated on the page. A lower price doesn’t show the XM5 beats the XM6. If you are weighing the two, compare their current prices and specs side by side.

How to decide
- Open the Amazon listing for the WH-1000XM5 and note the current price, seller and color.
- Compare it with $198, the September deal price, and with $248, the earlier low What Hi-Fi? cited.
- If it’s near $198, it matches the best price the outlets reported. If it has returned to roughly $300, it matches Sony’s own price, so there is little reason to rush.
- Check the return window before buying.
