If you are shopping beyond the Sony WH-1000XM5, start with four current models that address different priorities: the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the straightforward successor, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) is the ANC-focused rival, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless stands out for its manufacturer-stated battery claim, and the Apple AirPods Max 2 is the ecosystem-led option for Apple users.
There is no universal winner. Noise cancellation, sound tuning, comfort, battery conditions, phone and computer compatibility, portability, and the price available in your region should determine your choice. The specifications below are current manufacturer claims accessed October 13, 2026; they are not a lab head-to-head test.

These are premium over-ear wireless headphones, but their strengths are not interchangeable. A longer battery claim does not prove better ANC, and a codec or Bluetooth version alone does not establish superior sound on every device or streaming service.

Which alternative should you choose?
Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 for the most direct XM5 replacement
The WH-1000XM6 is the natural first comparison if you already like Sony’s flagship line and want a current model rather than a different design philosophy. Sony’s current listing uses the phrase “Up to 30-Hour Battery Life,” specifying up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling enabled and up to 40 hours with it disabled. It also lists Bluetooth 5.3, LDAC, AAC and LC3 codecs, plus multipoint connection.
This makes the XM6 particularly practical for someone who moves between a phone and a laptop, uses compatible high-quality Bluetooth playback, or wants familiar Sony features. It is not automatically a better purchase than an XM5: your decision should account for the price difference, fit, condition of any XM5 you already own, and whether the XM6’s newer specification set matters to you.
Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for ANC priority
The second-generation QuietComfort Ultra is the clearest comparison for a shopper whose first question is, “Which headphones block the most outside sound for my commute, flight or office?” What Hi-Fi? reports that this generation retains an edge for outright sound-blocking intensity in Quiet mode. That is an editorial assessment, not a guarantee for every listener, seal or environment.
Bose lists up to 30 hours of playback. Its manual gives the conditions more precisely: up to 30 hours with ANC on and Immersive Audio off, or up to 23 hours with both ANC and Immersive Audio enabled. Bose also specifies Bluetooth 5.4, Snapdragon Sound and a rechargeable, replaceable lithium-ion battery. If you expect to use Immersive Audio continuously, use the 23-hour figure as the more relevant planning number rather than the headline maximum.
Choose the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless for the longest stated runtime
Sennheiser lists up to 57 hours of battery life for the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless, substantially above the headline figures supplied for the other three models. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result in the available evidence, and real runtime will vary with volume, codec, ANC behavior, calls and other settings.
The MOMENTUM 5 uses a 42 mm driver, adaptive ANC and eight microphones, and supports Bluetooth 5.4. It is the model to investigate if you spend long periods away from a charger or are drawn to Sennheiser’s approach to sound. Battery endurance should not be the sole reason to buy it: verify that its headband and ear-cup shape suit you, and check return terms in case the fit or tuning is not right.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Choose the Apple AirPods Max 2 for Apple-specific features
AirPods Max 2 is aimed at buyers who value Apple’s integrated feature set as much as raw battery capacity. Apple lists ANC, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, USB-C lossless audio support and Bluetooth 5.3. The stated listening time is up to 20 hours with ANC enabled, the shortest manufacturer figure in this comparison. Apple lists a weight of 13.6 ounces.

If your everyday devices are an iPhone, iPad or Mac, that ecosystem context may be the deciding advantage; if you mainly use Windows, Android or a mixture of platforms, investigate which controls and features remain available before buying. USB-C lossless support is a notable feature, but it does not by itself make the AirPods Max 2 the best-sounding choice for every listener.
Noise cancellation: what the evidence supports
All four models are active noise-cancelling over-ear headphones, but the available evidence does not establish a universal ranking. ANC effectiveness depends on the frequency and consistency of the noise, the physical seal around your ears, glasses or hair, firmware and the selected mode.
Bose is the most defensible starting point when blocking external sound is your primary criterion because What Hi-Fi? describes the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) as retaining an edge for outright sound-blocking intensity in Quiet mode. Treat that as an editorial judgment rather than a promise that Bose will outperform every competitor on every aircraft, train or street.
Sony’s XM6 is the direct successor option for shoppers who want Sony’s current flagship platform. Sennheiser specifies adaptive ANC with eight microphones, while Apple combines ANC with Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness. Those labels describe features, not a standardized performance score. Try each model with the kind of low-frequency engine rumble, voices or high-frequency office noise you actually encounter whenever a retailer’s return policy allows.

Battery life: read the conditions, not just the number
Battery claims in this group are measured under different conditions. The figures are useful for planning but are not a controlled comparison.
Rank #3
- WORLD’S BEST IN-EAR ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2* so you can stay fully immersed in the moment.*
- BREAKTHROUGH AUDIO PERFORMANCE — Experience breathtaking, three-dimensional audio with AirPods Pro 3. A new acoustic architecture delivers transformed bass, detailed clarity so you can hear every instrument, and stunningly vivid vocals.

- EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*
- Sony WH-1000XM6: Sony states up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with it off.
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): Bose’s specification lists up to 30 hours. The manual states up to 30 hours with ANC on and Immersive Audio off, and up to 23 hours with both enabled.
- Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless: Sennheiser claims up to 57 hours. The available material does not independently verify that figure.
- Apple AirPods Max 2: Apple states up to 20 hours of listening with ANC enabled.
Calls, high volume, multipoint behavior, Bluetooth codec, temperature and additional processing can reduce actual runtime. If you need a headphone for multi-day travel, the Sennheiser claim offers the largest stated margin. If you usually charge overnight, comfort, ANC and device compatibility may matter more than the difference between headline figures.
Sound, comfort and fit: the variables specifications cannot settle
None of the cited specifications identifies a single best sound signature or a universal comfort winner. Sound preference is personal: one listener may prefer a more energetic presentation, another a smoother balance, and a third may rely on an equalizer. Ear shape, clamping force, glasses, hair and heat also change how a headphone feels and how well its ANC works.
How to evaluate fit
- Wear the headphones for at least 15 to 20 minutes if a shop permits it. Pressure that seems minor at first can become distracting.
- Check whether your ears sit fully inside the pads without touching the driver or pad seam.
- Move your head, adjust the headband and simulate the posture you use on a train or at a desk.
- Confirm that the seal remains intact when you wear glasses or turn your head.
- Read the retailer’s return and restocking rules before opening the package. A return window is more useful than an abstract comfort ranking.
Use editorial listening impressions as guidance, not as a substitute for your own fit and music preferences. The current evidence does not include hands-on testing of these four models.
Connectivity and ecosystem trade-offs
Sony: codec range and multipoint
Sony lists LDAC, AAC and LC3 support, Bluetooth 5.3 and multipoint for the WH-1000XM6. Multipoint is useful when you regularly switch between two paired devices. LDAC can provide a higher-bitrate Bluetooth path on compatible hardware and settings, but codec availability and audible results depend on the phone, computer, operating system and service.
Bose and Sennheiser: current Bluetooth platforms
Bose lists Bluetooth 5.4 and Snapdragon Sound for the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). Sennheiser lists Bluetooth 5.4 for the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless. A newer Bluetooth number does not by itself guarantee longer battery life, greater range or better sound in your particular setup; compatibility with your devices remains the practical test.
Apple: USB-C lossless and platform limits
Apple lists Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C lossless audio support, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness for AirPods Max 2. Apple also warns that functionality may be limited with non-Apple devices. Make a list of the phones, tablets, computers and game systems you will actually use, then verify which controls and features work on each before committing.
Rank #4
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Portability and everyday use
Over-ear ANC headphones are less pocketable than earbuds, and none of these specifications establishes a definitive winner for folded size or case volume. Consider where the headphones will live between listening sessions, whether a case fits your work bag, and how often you will carry them through security or a commute.

Weight can influence long sessions. Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at 13.6 ounces; comparable weight figures for the other models are not established in the available specifications, so do not infer a ranking. A lighter product is not automatically more comfortable if its pads or clamp do not suit your head.
How to compare prices and value
Premium headphone prices and discounts vary by country, retailer and date. Current editorial listings place the XM6, QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), AirPods Max 2 and other premium competitors at different list-price points, but those amounts should be checked immediately before publication or purchase. Do not treat an older review’s price as a current offer.
Compare the total value of the configuration you will use:
- the current street price in your country and the seller’s return period;
- whether the battery claim matches your ANC or Immersive Audio settings;
- compatibility with your main devices and required codecs;
- availability of replacement parts or a replaceable battery where relevant;
- weight, pad comfort and the likelihood that you will wear the headphones for hours.
A discount on an older generation can make it attractive, but only after you confirm stock, warranty and support. The evidence available here does not verify current pricing or inventory for prior-generation models.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat about the WH-1000XM4, MOMENTUM 4 and first-generation AirPods Max?
Older comparison pages often mention the Sony WH-1000XM4, Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 and first-generation AirPods Max. They may still be sensible lower-cost choices if you find new, supported stock, but current availability and prices were not verified for this guide. Treat any 2024-era or undated price as historical context, not a live deal.
Check the manufacture date, warranty coverage, battery condition for used units and the seller’s return policy. A lower purchase price is less valuable if the unit is refurbished without clear battery information or lacks the accessories and support you need.
A practical buying process
- Set your main priority. Pick one lead requirement: strongest reported ANC, Sony continuity, longest stated battery, or Apple integration.
- Confirm device compatibility. Check your phone and computer operating systems, Bluetooth support, codec access, multipoint needs and whether USB-C audio is useful to you.
- Shortlist two models. Keeping one alternative prevents a single feature from overshadowing fit and daily usability.
- Test the physical fit. Use a store demo or a retailer with a clear return policy. Wear each candidate long enough to expose pressure, heat or seal problems.
- Price-check on the day you buy. Compare the model’s current price, warranty, seller reputation and return terms rather than relying on an old article.
- Recheck the settings that affect battery. For Bose, decide whether Immersive Audio will be on; for Sony, note whether ANC is normally enabled; for Apple, plan around its 20-hour ANC figure.
Bottom line: match the headphone to the job
The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the safest starting point for an XM5 owner who wants the current Sony successor, with Sony-stated 30-hour ANC-on playback, 40 hours with ANC off, multipoint and broad codec support. Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) deserve priority when maximum reported sound blocking is the goal, while remembering the lower 23-hour figure with Immersive Audio enabled. Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is the battery-led alternative, with a manufacturer claim of up to 57 hours. AirPods Max 2 is the ecosystem choice for Apple users who value Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and USB-C lossless audio more than the shortest stated runtime in this group. Whichever model you choose, fit, device compatibility and the current returnable price should make the final decision.
