Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Neither the Sony WF-1000XM5 nor the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 is a clear winner for every listener. RTINGS’ comparison, updated June 15, 2026, finds their noise isolation close overall: Sennheiser does somewhat better with midrange noise, while Sony blocks somewhat more bright treble. Codec compatibility, fit and the sound you prefer may matter more than a single overall verdict.
There is also a generation caveat: What Hi-Fi? reported the Sony WF-1000XM6 arrived in 2026 as the XM5’s successor, and reported Sennheiser revealed the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 on August 20, 2026. This comparison is specifically about the XM5 and MTW4; check current regional availability and prices before choosing an older generation.

At a glance: Sony WF-1000XM5 vs Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4
| What matters | Sony WF-1000XM5 | Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Noise isolation | RTINGS finds it blocks somewhat more bright treble noise. | RTINGS finds it filters somewhat more midrange noise. |
| Codecs identified by RTINGS | LDAC | aptX Adaptive, aptX Low Latency, aptX High Quality and aptX HD |
| Fit and shape | RTINGS describes it as slightly less chunky and notes its memory foam tips. | SoundGuys describes it as bulkier; fit still depends on the individual listener. |
| Dust and splash rating | Not stated in the comparative sources cited here. | IP54 for the earbuds only, according to Sennheiser’s product page. |
| App support | Not stated in the comparative sources cited here. | Smart Control app for iOS and Android, according to Sennheiser. |
These are comparison points, not a universal ranking. A codec is useful only if the playback device supports it, and the isolation differences describe the cited comparison rather than a guarantee of what every listener will hear.

RTINGS identifies LDAC support on the Sony and four aptX options on the Sennheiser: Adaptive, Low Latency, High Quality and HD. That distinction can help narrow the choice if a codec is part of your setup, but do not assume a phone or other source supports every listed format. Check the specifications of the device you actually use, as well as the apps and files you play.
#1 Best Overall
- This Certified Refurbished product is manufacturer refurbished, shows limited or no wear, and includes all original accessories plus a 90-day limited hardware warranty.
- The WF-1000XM5 features the Integrated Processor V2 for audio clarity and active noise cancellation.
- Three microphones in each earbud actively cancel out distracting ambient sounds.
- Foam ear tips with an adjusted ear tip angle provide ultimate comfort.
- The latest upgrades to Sony's flagship earbuds include a redesigned ear bud and charging case that's smaller and lighter.
Codec lists do not establish which earbuds will sound better to you. Tom’s Guide describes the MTW4 as having a retuned sound signature and updated Bluetooth specifications, and says it challenges Sony’s earlier position. That is the outlet’s editorial assessment, not a controlled finding that one sounds better for all listeners.
How do their noise isolation and fit compare?
RTINGS calls the models close in overall noise isolation but identifies different strengths by frequency: the MTW4 filters somewhat more midrange noise, and the XM5 blocks somewhat more bright treble noise. Treat that as a useful distinction, not a reason to expect one pair to silence every environment better. The comparison does not establish a universal noise-cancelling winner.

Physical fit is another practical difference. RTINGS describes the Sony as slightly less chunky and notes its memory foam tips; SoundGuys describes the Sennheiser pair as bulkier. Neither description predicts how securely or comfortably an earbud will fit your ears. If possible, prioritize a return policy or a way to try the pair, and check that the tips form a comfortable seal.
What durability and app details are established?
Sennheiser specifies IP54 dust and splash resistance for the MTW4 earbuds only—not the charging case—and lists Smart Control app support for iOS and Android. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent verification of performance. Do not infer that the case shares the earbuds’ rating.

Check the generation and price before ordering
Because 2026 reports identify successors to both products, first compare the actual local prices and availability of the XM5 and MTW4 with the newer models. The reports establish the arrival of the XM6 and the reveal of the MTW5, but do not establish current regional stock or prices for any of these earbuds. An older model can still make sense at a suitable price; the available evidence does not establish which one is the better value today.

Verdict
There is no evidence-based universal winner between the Sony WF-1000XM5 and Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4. Let your device’s codec support, your own fit, the type of background noise you want to reduce, and the current price decide. Treat this as a comparison of these two generations, not a claim that either remains its maker’s newest model.
