Choose the Sony NW-ZX900 if your priorities are Sony’s Walkman software and processing, a Full HD display, Android 16 and unusually long battery life. Choose the FiiO M23 if you need substantially more published headphone power, desktop operation, two USB-C ports and broad DAC/amp connectivity. The Sony is listed at $1,899.99 in the US; FiiO’s current M23 street price is not stated here and should be checked before purchase. Neither specification sheet proves that one player sounds better.

The short answer

The Sony NW-ZX900 and FiiO M23 target different definitions of a premium digital audio player. Sony’s flagship is a polished Android Walkman with a 5-inch 1920×1080 screen, Android 16, 64GB of internal storage, balanced output rated at 250mW + 250mW and battery claims reaching 40 hours for 128kbps MP3 playback. FiiO’s M23 is more amplifier-focused: it combines AK4191EQ and AK4499EX DACs with a four-way THX AAA-78+ amplifier, provides dual USB-C ports and desktop mode, and publishes up to 1000mW + 1000mW per channel when externally powered in super-high-gain mode.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes the choice straightforward for most buyers. The NW-ZX900 is the better fit for a listener who values a Sony interface, high-resolution screen, long sessions away from a charger and a premium Walkman build. The M23 is the more practical tool for hard-to-drive headphones, a desk-based system or anyone who wants one player to act as a portable source, USB DAC and externally powered amplifier. A current M23 price must be verified at the time you buy because no fixed street price is established here.

Price, release timing and what the premium costs

Sony’s known price

Sony Electronics lists the NW-ZX900 at $1,899.99 US suggested retail price in 2026. That is a published MSRP, not a temporary sale price, and it positions the player well above mainstream Android music players. Sony Japan describes a planned 27 November 2026 release. As of 18 October 2026, that date is still in the future, and a Japanese launch date does not establish when the US or other regions will receive stock.

FiiO’s price needs a live check

The available M23 specifications do not establish a current street price. FiiO hardware is commonly sold through regional dealers and prices can change with promotions, bundles and inventory, so do not use an old review price to calculate the gap. Compare the live cost of the player, warranty coverage in your country and any included case or screen protector against Sony’s stated MSRP.

How to judge value

  • Paying for the NW-ZX900 makes the most sense when its long battery rating, Sony-specific processing and Full HD interface are central to your use.
  • The M23 can be the better value if the same budget must also cover demanding headphones, a desktop amplifier role or a USB source for a computer.
  • Neither price guarantees a preferred sound. A player that has enough clean voltage and current for your headphones is more valuable than one with a longer feature list you will not use.

Headphone power: where the M23 has the clearest advantage

Published output figures

Sony rates the NW-ZX900’s stereo mini output at 50mW + 50mW and its balanced output at 250mW + 250mW, both at high gain. Those figures are substantial for efficient in-ear monitors and many portable headphones, especially when the headphones are wired through the balanced connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FiiO publishes a much higher ceiling. In super-high-gain desktop use with external power, the M23 is rated up to 1000mW + 1000mW per channel. Its high-gain figures also include 240mW at 300 ohms, a useful reference for high-impedance headphones. The 1000mW claim is conditional: it requires external power, the specified gain setting and the desktop operating mode. It is not the battery-only output you should expect while walking around.

Rank #2
FiiO M33 R2R Portable HiFi Music Player, Snapdragon 680, 8GB RAM + 128GB Storage, True R2R DAC, XMOS XU316 USB Audio, 1100mW Balanced Output, AUTO EQ, 5.5” Full HD Display (Vintage Gold)
  • Flagship Performance with Massive Storage Built on Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, ensuring smooth multitasking, fast streaming, and long-term system stability far beyond its class.
  • Dedicated XMOS XU316 for Superior USB Audio Features a standalone XMOS XU316 USB audio processor, delivering ultra-low latency and consistent high-quality performance for music and video playback across all platforms.
  • True Portable R2R HiFi Player FiiO’s first portable player built around a self-developed R2R resistor ladder DAC, faithfully translating desktop-grade R2R architecture into a compact form. Offers two sound profiles: FLAT (neutral) and WARM (smooth, analog-inspired).
  • Immersive 5.5” Full HD Display, Lightweight Design A 5.5-inch 1080×2160 touchscreen with cassette, spectrum, and VU meter themes enhances both visual immersion and listening ritual. Weighing only 258g, with an AG matte glass back for comfortable daily use.
  • AUTO EQ for Effortless Sound Matching Supports AUTO EQ, automatically matching headphone frequency curves for precise, lossless tuning. Additional preset and manual EQ options allow deep customization.

What those numbers mean in practice

Impedance alone does not determine difficulty. A low-impedance planar headphone can demand considerable current, while a high-impedance dynamic model may need more voltage. Sensitivity, music level, balanced wiring and the recording’s dynamics all affect the result. The M23’s extra headroom gives it a stronger specification for inefficient planars and other demanding designs, but it does not make the NW-ZX900 unsuitable for every full-size headphone.

  • For sensitive IEMs, use the lowest comfortable gain and check for hiss before judging either player.
  • For 250–300-ohm or inefficient headphones, the M23’s 240mW-at-300-ohms figure and external-power mode provide more measurable margin.
  • Do not connect a balanced cable to a headphone that is not wired for balanced use. Use a proper cable or manufacturer-approved adapter; a passive plug adapter cannot safely convert every wiring scheme.

Battery life: Sony wins endurance, but the tests are different

NW-ZX900 claims

Sony quotes up to 40 hours of 128kbps MP3 playback with its W.MUSIC application and up to 35 hours with other music apps. Sony also lists about 38 hours for 96kHz/24-bit FLAC in the stated balanced-output test condition. The company’s press material summarizes this as “a battery life of up to 40 hours of 128kbps MP3 playback, or up to 35 hours with the streaming service apps.” High-resolution files, wireless radios, screen brightness and amplifier gain can reduce the result.

M23 claims

FiiO gives the M23 a 5,500mAh battery and reports 10.5 hours from its 3.5mm output and 9 hours from 4.4mm. Those are specified MP3 tests using 32-ohm headphones, not universal streaming figures. A large battery does not automatically translate into longer runtime when the amplifier is delivering substantially more power.

Choosing by routine

Your routine More suitable player Reason
Long flights, commutes or multi-day travel with minimal charging NW-ZX900 Its published 35–40-hour MP3/app figures are far above FiiO’s 9–10.5-hour test results.
Short portable sessions followed by desk listening M23 Desktop mode can shift the heavy amplification load to external power.
High-resolution FLAC stored locally NW-ZX900, on stated endurance Sony lists about 38 hours under its 96kHz/24-bit balanced test condition.
High-output listening from a battery-powered player Neither should be judged by the headline maximum The M23’s highest rating requires external power, while actual runtime depends on gain, load and file type.

Software, streaming and everyday operation

Sony: Android 16 with Walkman processing

The NW-ZX900 runs Android 16 and includes Sony’s W.MUSIC player, support for streaming-service apps, Bluetooth 5.4, Native DSD playback, DSD remastering and AI upscaling. Android gives you the familiar option of installing compatible services, while Sony’s processing is aimed at listeners who prefer the Walkman presentation over a bare, utility-style player.

Rank #3
FiiO M21 Android 13 Portable Music Player MP3 Walkman Snapdragon 680 4* CS43198 DAC Chips Hi-Res Audio DSD Bluetooth LDAC (Blue-Black)
  • A Brand-New Processor That Surpasses Competing Products — Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 Built on a 6nm process, it delivers superior performance and enhanced power efficiency. With 4GB+64GB storage and Android 13, it ensures smooth and seamless operation for all major music apps.
  • Patented Desktop Mode with 950mW High Power Output: When Desktop Mode is activated, the M21 operates entirely on external power, with the built-in battery neither charging nor discharging—effectively extending battery lifespan.

  • Versatile Ports, High-Performance Output: Supports dual 3.5mm + 4.4mm headphone/LO outputs, equipped with independent line amplification circuits. Also supports SPDIF and USB Audio output, with SPDIF performance rivaling professional digital transports—reducing jitter by 70%.

Streaming-app battery life is explicitly rated lower than W.MUSIC playback: 35 hours versus 40 hours for 128kbps MP3. That distinction matters if the device will spend most of its time connected to a service rather than playing files from storage. App compatibility, account requirements and regional catalogs remain dependent on the service and the Android distribution available in your market.

FiiO: several operating modes

The M23 supports Android as well as a pure-music mode for listeners who want fewer background services. FiiO lists Bluetooth receiving, AirPlay and Roon Ready support, alongside USB-DAC operation. Its published decoding limits are up to 384kHz/32-bit and DSD256 for local or USB decoding, and up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD512 for USB audio. These are format-handling limits, not proof that higher sample rates sound better.

Bluetooth receiving is useful when the M23 is acting as a portable endpoint for another device, while USB-DAC mode lets it serve as the conversion and amplification stage for a computer. Roon Ready and AirPlay support can make it easier to place the player in a home network, although the convenience depends on your existing software and network setup.

Storage, screen and portability

Internal and expandable storage

Both players provide 64GB of internal storage and a microSD slot. After the operating system and preinstalled applications, usable internal space will be lower than the headline capacity. A microSDXC card is the sensible accessory for a large lossless library, offline streaming downloads or high-resolution files. FiiO says cards up to 2TB are supported in theory; Sony’s maximum card size is not stated in the listed specifications, so confirm the supported capacity and filesystem before buying the largest card available.

Rank #4

Screen trade-off

Sony uses a 5.0-inch 1920×1080 display. That higher pixel density benefits album art, text and library navigation, and it gives Android applications more room for fine interface elements. FiiO’s 5.5-inch 1440×720 panel is physically larger but less sharp. The larger surface can be easier to tap, while Sony’s Full HD resolution is better suited to reading dense menus and viewing detailed artwork. Neither specification establishes brightness, color accuracy or outdoor legibility.

Carrying the players

Sony lists the NW-ZX900 at about 3.04 × 5.50 × 0.69 inches and 0.76lb. That is a substantial object compared with a phone, but still practical in a jacket or small bag. FiiO’s physical dimensions and weight are not stated in the supplied specifications, so a portability comparison should not assume that the M23 is lighter or smaller. Check the manufacturer’s regional listing if pocketability is decisive.

USB, DAC and desktop modes

NW-ZX900 as a USB DAC

The Sony includes USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C and a USB DAC mode. You can therefore use it not only as a standalone player but also as an external DAC and headphone amplifier for a computer or another compatible source. The available specifications do not state every supported USB input format or whether charging behavior changes in DAC mode, so consult the regional manual for those details.

M23’s two-port approach

FiiO gives the M23 dual USB-C ports, USB-DAC mode, dual-mode fast charging and desktop mode. The extra port arrangement is designed to separate charging or external-power duties from data use in supported setups. Desktop mode is particularly important: FiiO says the external supply powers the player while “the built-in battery will neither be charged nor discharged.” That avoids repeatedly cycling the battery during long desk sessions.

Best Value

  • AUTO EQ for Effortless Sound Matching Supports AUTO EQ, automatically matching headphone frequency curves for precise, lossless tuning. Additional preset and manual EQ options allow deep customization.

In super-high-gain desktop use, FiiO publishes up to 1000mW + 1000mW per channel. Treat this as a desktop-amplifier capability rather than a portable-battery promise. If you mostly listen at a desk, the M23 can replace a separate USB DAC and headphone amplifier; if you rarely connect to a computer, the second USB-C port may have little value.

Balanced output and accessories

Balanced operation is available on both players and is most useful when your headphones or IEMs have a genuinely balanced cable. Sony’s balanced output is rated at 250mW + 250mW at high gain, compared with 50mW + 50mW from its stereo mini output. FiiO provides a 4.4mm balanced output and publishes its highest power figures in the externally powered, super-high-gain configuration.

A 4.4mm balanced cable is a sensible purchase only when the headphone maker provides compatible balanced wiring. Do not assume that a 4.4mm plug alone improves sound; the practical benefits are usually greater output headroom and, depending on the design, better channel separation. For a large library, pair either player with a reputable microSDXC card after checking the supported capacity. Keep a conventional single-ended cable available for headphones that do not support balanced connection.

Sound quality: what the specifications cannot settle

The two products use different conversion and amplification designs, but no controlled, current head-to-head listening test establishes a definitive sound-quality winner between them. Sony emphasizes its Walkman processing, Native DSD, DSD remastering and AI upscaling. FiiO emphasizes the AK4191EQ + AK4499EX architecture and THX AAA-78+ amplifier. Those design choices may appeal to different listeners, yet a parts list cannot predict your preference.

System matching is more informative than a headline DAC name. Consider the headphone’s sensitivity and impedance, whether you need balanced wiring, the gain level that reaches your normal volume without strain, and whether your source is local lossless files or a streaming app. Compare the players with the same headphones, cable, volume and recording before deciding that one has more detail, bass or soundstage. Such impressions are personal unless they come from a controlled independent test.

Which player should you buy?

Buy the Sony NW-ZX900 when these priorities fit

  • You want a flagship Walkman interface and Sony’s audio-processing features.
  • Android 16 and a 5-inch Full HD display matter more than maximum amplifier output.
  • You travel often and value Sony’s 35–40-hour published MP3/app endurance.
  • Your headphones are efficient enough that 250mW + 250mW balanced output provides comfortable headroom.
  • You accept the $1,899.99 US MSRP and can wait for the stated regional release schedule.

Buy the FiiO M23 when these priorities fit

  • You use inefficient planar or high-impedance headphones and want the strongest published output specification.
  • You need a desk system with external-power desktop mode and no battery charging or discharging in that mode.
  • Dual USB-C ports, USB-DAC operation, Bluetooth receiving, AirPlay or Roon Ready support are useful in your setup.
  • You want a pure-music mode in addition to Android.
  • You prefer to verify a live street price rather than commit to Sony’s stated premium MSRP.

When neither is the obvious choice

If your headphones are easy to drive, your phone already streams everything you need and you rarely store local files, either player may be unnecessary. The premium is easier to justify when you will use the device’s distinctive strengths every week: Sony’s endurance and interface, or FiiO’s output and desktop flexibility. Do not buy either solely because a DAC or amplifier model sounds impressive on a specification sheet.

Setup checklist for a new owner

  1. Confirm regional support and warranty. Check that the model is officially sold for your country, supports your preferred streaming services and includes local warranty coverage. For the NW-ZX900, verify the actual shipping date because 27 November 2026 is the planned Japanese release date listed by Sony.
  2. Update the firmware. Complete the device’s system update before importing a large library or installing streaming applications. A current firmware build can affect codec support, USB behavior and stability.
  3. Choose storage. Insert a compatible microSDXC card, format it using the player’s supported option if offered, and copy a small test folder before transferring your full library. FiiO’s 2TB statement is theoretical; confirm card compatibility rather than assuming every 2TB card will work.
  4. Set up your library or services. Sign in to streaming applications on the Sony or use the M23’s Android environment, pure-music mode, AirPlay or Roon integration as appropriate. Download only the albums you need offline if battery and storage are priorities.
  5. Match the output to the cable. Use the stereo mini/3.5mm connection for conventional single-ended headphones and the balanced connection only with a properly wired balanced cable. Start at low volume and low gain, then increase gradually.
  6. Use external power intelligently. On the M23, enable desktop mode when you need its highest output at a desk and connect the specified external supply. For portable listening, leave desktop mode off and expect less output and shorter runtime than the headline desktop figure.
  7. Test with familiar recordings. Compare both players at matched volume using the same headphones and files. Check for hiss with sensitive IEMs, sufficient volume with full-size headphones and stable playback from both internal and microSD storage.

Bottom line

The Sony NW-ZX900 is the premium choice for Walkman software, Android 16, a sharper Full HD screen and exceptional published endurance, provided you are comfortable with its $1,899.99 US MSRP and planned release timing. The FiiO M23 is the stronger engineering choice for difficult headphones and desktop integration, with dual USB-C ports, a 5,500mAh battery, broad DAC modes and up to 1000mW + 1000mW per channel when externally powered. Select based on headphones, power needs, listening routine and connectivity—not on an assumed sound-quality winner that the available specifications do not establish.
