Sony Walkman NW-WM1ZM2 vs a Smartphone With a DAC: Which Is Better for Music?

For most listeners, a smartphone with a competent USB DAC is the better value and easier everyday system. The Sony NW-WM1ZM2 makes sense when you specifically want a separate high-end music player, extensive local storage, balanced 4.4mm output, a dedicated battery and Sony’s high-resolution playback features—and you are comfortable with its listed $3,699.99 MSRP. The available specifications do not establish that it sounds universally better than every phone-and-DAC combination.

The short answer: choose the system that solves your actual constraint

A phone and USB DAC can deliver high-resolution local files, wired headphone output and streaming without adding another general-purpose computer to your pocket. If you already own a modern phone, the incremental cost can be limited to a DAC or adapter, and you retain the broadest choice of music, communication and utility apps.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The NW-WM1ZM2 is a dedicated Android-based player. It combines 256GB of internal memory (approximately 215GB usable), microSD expansion, 3.5mm and balanced 4.4mm outputs, Wi-Fi, LDAC and Sony’s S-Master HX amplification. It supports PCM up to 384kHz/32-bit and DSD up to 11.2MHz. Those are meaningful capabilities for a large offline library or demanding wired headphones, but they do not by themselves prove an audible advantage over a well-designed DAC.

The practical decision is therefore less “which device has the highest specification?” and more “do I need a separate, storage-heavy, long-running music computer enough to justify carrying and paying for it?”

What the Sony NW-WM1ZM2 actually provides

Hardware and playback formats

Sony positions the NW-WM1ZM2 as part of its Signature Series. Its S-Master HX digital amplifier, 256GB internal storage and microSD slot are built around local, high-resolution playback. Sony’s 2026 product information lists PCM playback to 384kHz/32-bit and DSD playback to 11.2MHz. The internal-memory figure is 256GB, with approximately 215GB available to the user after system space.

The player has two physical headphone outputs: a conventional 3.5mm connection and a 4.4mm balanced connection. A balanced socket is not automatically higher fidelity; its benefit depends on the circuit design, the headphone cable and the power the player can deliver. You need headphones or an interchangeable cable terminated in 4.4mm to use it.

Size, weight and wireless features

Sony Korea lists dimensions of approximately 80.5 × 142.5 × 21.0mm and a weight of about 490g. That is substantially heavier than a phone and is a serious second device in a pocket or bag. The player uses Android, connects to Wi-Fi for downloading and streaming, and supports LDAC when paired with a compatible receiving device. App compatibility depends on the Android version, the service and the service’s current support for that version.

Battery figures and what they mean

Sony’s published figures are playback estimates rather than a guarantee for every file, app or output setting. The Korean specification lists approximately 40 hours for MP3 and 96kHz/24-bit FLAC, and approximately 35 hours for 192kHz/24-bit FLAC. DSD playback is shorter: about 25 or 15 hours for 2.8MHz DSD and about 18 or 13 hours for 5.6MHz DSD, depending on the output used. Streaming over Wi-Fi, screen use, Bluetooth transmission and background apps can reduce these figures.

What a smartphone-plus-DAC system includes

The phone is the computer and library front end

A smartphone supplies the operating system, music apps, downloads, search, messaging and network connection. Storage varies by model and may be shared with photographs, video and other apps. Some music applications keep files in their own sandbox, while others can scan a local folder or external storage. Check the specific app’s offline and file-management behavior before moving a large library.

Apple’s iPhone 16 specification lists AAC, Apple Lossless and FLAC playback and a USB-C connector. Apple Support says wired audio can be connected through USB-C with the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter or a compatible USB-C audio adapter. Android phones likewise can use USB audio, but implementation, power limits and operating-system behavior differ by model.

The DAC determines the wired output

With a phone, the DAC and headphone amplifier are separate choices. A small USB-C DAC may terminate in 3.5mm; another may provide 4.4mm balanced output; higher-powered models may be desktop-sized or require their own battery. Compare the DAC’s output power and impedance guidance with the sensitivity and impedance of your headphones. A low-power dongle can be excellent for efficient in-ear monitors yet inadequate for inefficient full-size headphones.

Sony’s USB-DAC guidance notes that Android high-resolution playback generally requires an OTG cable and a USB cable, and it distinguishes the connection path for smartphones and iPhones. In practice, use a data-capable cable, allow the phone to recognize the DAC, and verify that the music app is outputting to the external device rather than the phone’s internal path.

Sound quality: what can and cannot be concluded

Specifications are not a blind listening result

The Walkman’s format support, amplifier design and balanced output describe what it can play and how it is connected. They do not demonstrate a universal audible victory over every smartphone and DAC. A controlled comparison would need the same headphones, matched volume, identical files and a blind procedure. Official product pages and support documents provide specifications and manufacturer descriptions, not such a comparison.

When hardware differences can matter

A DAC can be the better choice if a phone’s existing output has audible noise, insufficient volume or poor control of your headphones. Conversely, the Walkman can be useful when its output has enough headroom for your particular headphones, when you want a 4.4mm cable without an adapter, or when you prefer one known playback chain instead of assembling and troubleshooting several parts.

For efficient headphones, both systems may already exceed what is needed electrically. In that case, differences in mastering, fit, seal, volume matching and recording quality can dominate the result. Do not buy the Sony solely because a larger sample-rate or bit-depth number appears in a specification sheet.

How to calculate a phone-system budget

  1. Start with equipment you already own. If your phone has USB-C or another supported digital connection, do not count its full retail price again.
  2. Choose the output you need. A 3.5mm dongle is usually the smallest option; select a DAC with 4.4mm only if your headphones and listening habits justify it.
  3. Check power requirements. Compare the DAC’s rated output at your headphone’s impedance with the manufacturer’s recommended drive level.
  4. Add practical accessories. Include a short cable, strain relief or a powered DAC if the phone cannot supply enough USB power.
  5. Account for storage. A phone with limited free space may require deleting downloads or relying on streaming, whereas the Walkman’s microSD slot can hold a separate music library.

The phone route wins on value when you already own the phone and need only a modest DAC. The Walkman’s value improves only when you will regularly use its storage, battery, outputs and separation from the phone; unused capability is still expensive capability.

Storage and offline-library decisions

When 215GB usable is useful

Approximately 215GB of usable internal space can hold a substantial lossless library, and microSD expansion lets you separate music from the player’s system storage. This is attractive for listeners who travel without dependable connectivity, keep multiple versions of albums, or prefer permanent files over app-managed downloads.

Phone storage can be enough

A phone is adequate when your library is smaller, you stream most of the time, or you already have sufficient free capacity. Before choosing a DAP for storage alone, check whether your phone supports offline downloads, whether your service removes downloads when a subscription changes, and whether your preferred local-player app can read the file formats and folders you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery and the “second device” trade-off

Why a dedicated player can be convenient

The Walkman’s battery is reserved for music, so listening does not consume the phone’s communications battery. It can also keep your music library and notifications separate. Sony’s published 35-to-40-hour figures for the specified PCM files are useful for planning long trips, while high-rate DSD and network streaming require more frequent charging.

Why the phone may still be simpler

A phone-plus-DAC chain can mean one device, one operating system and one charging routine if the DAC is bus-powered. A battery-powered DAC adds another charging task, and a dangling adapter can be less convenient than a player with a built-in headphone socket. Decide whether separating music from your phone reduces interruptions enough to justify carrying nearly 490g of additional hardware.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Balanced 4.4mm: when it is worth carrying

Choose the 4.4mm output when your headphones have a compatible cable and you need the Walkman’s balanced stage for connection flexibility or additional drive. Balanced wiring uses separate signal paths and a different connector; it does not make an ordinary headphone inherently higher quality. A phone system can provide the same connector through a suitable DAC, so 4.4mm alone is not a reason to spend $3,699.99.

Check cable termination before buying. A 4.4mm plug must not be forced into a 3.5mm socket, and adapters should be designed for the specific connection rather than improvised. If you use several headphones with different plugs, the Walkman’s inclusion of both 3.5mm and 4.4mm is more practical than a single-output player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming, apps and connectivity

Walkman streaming

The NW-WM1ZM2 is Android-based and supports Wi-Fi downloading and streaming. Sony describes it as combining high sound quality with Wi-Fi compatibility. You can install supported services and manage offline content, but the experience depends on the player’s Android software, available app versions and service requirements. LDAC is available for compatible receiving devices; it is a Bluetooth codec capability, not a guarantee that every Bluetooth product will use it.

Phone streaming

A smartphone generally receives new app releases first and integrates music with search, voice control, car systems, messaging and other services. That breadth is the strongest argument for the phone approach. The trade-off is that notifications, calls, background processes and operating-system updates share resources with music playback.

How to set up a smartphone with a USB DAC

  1. Confirm the connector. Identify the phone’s port and whether the DAC expects USB-C, Lightning or a USB-A connection through an adapter. Apple Support specifically documents USB-C audio through its USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter or USB-C to Lightning adapter.
  2. Use a data-capable cable or OTG adapter. Sony’s guidance for Android high-resolution USB-DAC playback calls for an OTG cable and USB cable. A charge-only cable will not establish an audio data connection.
  3. Connect the DAC before opening the music app. Unlock the phone, attach the DAC and approve any USB-access prompt. Some phones ask whether the DAC should be used by the connected app.
  4. Set a safe starting volume. Turn the DAC down before pressing play, then increase slowly. Balanced outputs can be substantially louder than 3.5mm outputs.
  5. Verify the output path. Check the app’s audio settings and the DAC’s indicator, if it has one. Confirm that volume changes affect the external device and that the phone speaker is silent.
  6. Test your library. Play a known FLAC or Apple Lossless file, then try your streaming service. Confirm that the app supports the sample rates and files you actually use rather than assuming a “hi-res” label covers every path.
  7. Manage power and handling. If the DAC draws too much power, use a model with its own battery or a powered hub approved for the phone. Secure the cable so the phone’s port is not stressed in a pocket.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • No sound: Reconnect the data cable, unlock the phone, approve USB access and select the external output in the app. Try a different cable; many cables carry power only.
  • Audio comes from the phone speaker: The DAC was not enumerated or the app retained the previous output. Disconnect, restart the app and reconnect.
  • Clicks, dropouts or sample-rate changes: Disable aggressive battery optimization for the music app, use a shorter cable and test local files to separate network problems from USB problems.
  • Insufficient volume: Check the DAC’s power rating against the headphones. A different output stage may be required; software volume boosts cannot replace electrical headroom safely.
  • Rapid battery drain: A bus-powered DAC draws from the phone. Lower screen use, stop background downloads or move to a self-powered DAC.
  • Streaming app will not install on the Walkman: Check the service’s supported Android version and device requirements. Android and Wi-Fi support do not mean every current app is compatible.
  • MicroSD library is missing: Reinsert and format the card according to Sony’s instructions, then rescan the library in the player software. Keep a backup before reformatting.

Who should buy each setup?

Pick the smartphone and DAC when:

  • You prioritize low additional cost and one-device convenience.
  • You use several streaming, podcast, communication or navigation apps.
  • Your headphones are easy to drive with a suitable dongle.
  • You do not need hundreds of gigabytes of dedicated music storage.
  • You are willing to check USB/OTG compatibility and carry a short adapter or cable.

Pick the NW-WM1ZM2 when:

  • You maintain a large local library and want 256GB built in plus microSD expansion.
  • You use demanding wired headphones and have confirmed the player’s outputs suit them.
  • You want both 3.5mm and balanced 4.4mm connections in one dedicated player.
  • You want music playback separated from your phone’s calls, notifications and battery.
  • You will use its dedicated battery and storage often enough to justify the $3,699.99 listed MSRP.
  • The approximately 490g weight and second-device routine are acceptable.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Write down your headphones, their impedance, sensitivity and cable termination.
  2. Estimate how much local music you actually keep offline, not how much you might collect someday.
  3. Measure a normal week of phone battery use while listening; identify whether music is a real battery problem.
  4. Try your current phone with a correctly connected USB DAC before assuming a dedicated player is necessary.
  5. Compare the Walkman’s weight and dimensions with the bag or pocket where it will live.
  6. Check current regional Sony pricing and stock; the $3,699.99 figure is a listed MSRP, not a permanent street price.
  7. Buy only after deciding whether you value separation, storage and connector choice more than the simplicity of one phone.

Verdict

The smartphone-plus-DAC system is the rational default: it costs less when you already own the phone, supports the widest app ecosystem and can provide excellent wired playback with the right output power. The Sony NW-WM1ZM2 is a specialist purchase for listeners who will actively use its large local library, microSD slot, dedicated battery, 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs and separate-device workflow. Its specifications are impressive, but they are not proof of a universal sonic advantage. Buy it for the complete dedicated-player experience, not merely for a larger number on a format or amplifier specification.
