The app provides a 10-band custom EQ. If an EQ boost appears unavailable, reduce the speaker volume first: Sony limits EQ increases when the speaker is already at maximum output.
What you can change on the ULT TOWER 5
Sony documents four selectable sound modes for the ULT TOWER 5/SRS-ULT500: ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, and LIVE. The product information also identifies the front-facing ULT button as a sound-mode and volume control. LIVE can be selected or assigned to that button through the Sony | Sound Connect app. See Sony’s SRS-ULT500 specifications and the ULT TOWER 5 product page.

Sony’s public specification does not publish a measured bass curve, decibel difference, crossover point, or frequency plot for ULT1 versus ULT2. Therefore, the useful way to choose between them is to listen at your normal volume rather than relying on claims that one mode is definitively “deeper” or “punchier.” For precise personal tuning, use the app’s custom equalizer instead of assuming what a mode does internally.

Before you change a setting
- Confirm the speaker model is SRS-ULT500, the model sold as ULT TOWER 5. Settings and help pages for other ULT speakers may use different controls.
- Connect the phone to the speaker before opening Sound Connect. Keep Bluetooth enabled and select the ULT TOWER 5 in the app’s device list.
- Play a familiar track continuously while adjusting. A short loop makes small EQ changes easier to hear than changing settings between unrelated songs.
- Set the speaker below maximum volume before attempting to boost any EQ band. The output-limit behavior is intentional, not evidence that the app is broken.
- Keep the speaker where you normally use it. Walls, corners, room size, and listening distance can alter bass more than a small slider move.
How to select ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, or LIVE
Using the physical ULT button
The front ULT button is documented as a mode and volume control, but Sony’s product page does not state the exact press sequence. Do not assume that a single press, repeated presses, or a long press cycles the same way on every firmware version. For the authoritative sequence, open the current SRS-ULT500 Help Guide and manuals page, choose the guide for your region, and follow the button instructions shown there.

If the button changes volume rather than mode, you have likely used the volume function described by Sony. Stop and check the Help Guide instead of repeatedly pressing it while music is loud. The guide page lists a Help Guide release date of September 18, 2026; labels or behavior can change with firmware, so use the guide that matches the software on your speaker.
Using Sony | Sound Connect
Sony identifies Sound Connect as the compatible smartphone app and states that LIVE can be selected or assigned to the ULT button through it. The exact menu names and tap order are not fixed in the cited pages, so the following process is deliberately label-neutral:

- Install or update Sony | Sound Connect from your phone’s official app store.
- Turn on the ULT TOWER 5 and connect it to your phone over Bluetooth.
- Open Sound Connect and select the connected SRS-ULT500 device.
- Open the speaker’s sound, mode, or equivalent audio-control panel. Look for the choices ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, and LIVE.
- Select one mode and play your reference track. If the app offers button assignment, choose LIVE there when you want the physical ULT button to recall it.
- Close the panel only after the app shows the change has been applied. If the speaker reverts, reconnect it and check for an app or firmware update.
Because Sony can rename app screens, treat the labels visible on your phone as authoritative. The important checks are that the app is controlling the SRS-ULT500, the selected mode is visibly highlighted, and the music is playing through that speaker rather than the phone.
How to adjust the 10-band EQ
Sony’s specification lists a 10-band custom EQ for the SRS-ULT500. The equalizer is controlled in Sony | Sound Connect rather than by a dedicated row of EQ buttons on the speaker. The cited Sony pages do not provide the app’s current tap-by-tap navigation, so menu names may differ by phone, app release, or region.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Connect the ULT TOWER 5 in Sound Connect and open its audio-control page.
- Choose the equalizer or custom-EQ control. If you see only presets, look for an option labeled Custom, Manual, or a similar edit command.
- Move one band at a time. Start with small changes, listen for several seconds, and return a slider to its original position if the result is worse.
- Adjust the lowest available bands for more or less bass, the middle bands for body and vocal balance, and the highest bands for treble detail. The app’s exact center frequencies are not stated in the cited specifications, so use the labels shown on your screen rather than assuming a particular frequency layout.
- Save the custom setting if Sound Connect offers a save or preset function, then replay the same passage to confirm the change.
EQ is relative to the mode you have selected. If you switch from FLAT to ULT1, the tonal result can change before you touch a slider. For repeatable comparisons, choose one mode, make your EQ adjustment, and leave that mode selected while evaluating it.
Practical bass-tuning method
There is no Sony-published measurement that ranks ULT1 and ULT2 by bass extension or boost. Use this controlled method to find the setting that works in your room:

- Set the speaker to a comfortable, nonmaximum volume.
- Choose FLAT as a neutral starting reference, or choose the ULT mode you intend to use for most listening.
- Play a track with a steady kick drum or bass line. Avoid a song whose bass changes dramatically from verse to chorus.
- Compare ULT1 and ULT2 at the same volume. Pick the one you prefer without describing it as a measured technical difference.
- Open the custom EQ and move only the lowest one or two displayed bands by a small amount. Pause between changes so you can hear whether the bass became fuller, boomy, or unchanged.
- If voices become muffled or kick drums lose definition, undo the last change rather than adding more treble to compensate.
- Test the final setting from your usual seat and at the loudness you normally use. A setting that sounds impressive at low volume may become excessive when the speaker is louder.
For a cleaner result, reducing a muddy low-mid band can be more effective than continually boosting the lowest band. Make that decision by listening; Sony does not publish the SRS-ULT500’s exact band frequencies in the cited specification.
Why an EQ boost may not work at maximum volume
This is the most important troubleshooting rule. Sony Support states: “If the speaker is already set to maximum volume, the device is already operating at its output limit.” It continues: “To protect the speaker, pressing + (plus) will not increase the equalizer setting. However, you can still decrease this setting with – (minus).” Read the full model-specific explanation at Sony’s maximum-volume support article.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

- Lower the speaker volume several steps.
- Return to the EQ screen and raise the desired band.
- Increase the speaker volume gradually after the EQ change is accepted.
- If the app still refuses the increase, disconnect and reconnect the speaker, then verify that Sound Connect identifies the SRS-ULT500.
At maximum volume, decreasing an EQ band may still be available because it reduces demand on the speaker. This behavior protects the output stage; it is not a hidden extra bass mode.

| Goal | Suggested starting point | How to refine it |
|---|---|---|
| Compare Sony’s ULT processing | Play the same track in ULT1 and ULT2 at matched volume. | Keep the mode you prefer, then make small custom-EQ changes. |
| Most neutral reference | Start with FLAT and leave EQ unchanged. | Change one band at a time only if the room or placement calls for it. |
| Use LIVE | Select LIVE in Sound Connect or assign it to the ULT button, as Sony documents. | Use the Help Guide for the physical-button sequence and verify the app confirms the mode. |
| More bass without harshness | Choose your preferred ULT mode, then make a modest low-band EQ adjustment below maximum volume. | Stop if bass becomes boomy or vocals lose clarity; room placement may be the larger factor. |
| Less bass or less boom | Use FLAT or reduce the lowest EQ bands. | Move the speaker away from a corner or wall if the room is reinforcing low frequencies. |
| Karaoke | Set the music mode and EQ first, then connect the optional microphone accessory. | The microphone is sold separately; it is not required for normal sound-mode or EQ adjustment. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The mode does not change
- Check that Sound Connect is connected to the SRS-ULT500, not another nearby speaker.
- Use the app’s visible mode control, or consult the current Help Guide for the physical ULT-button sequence. Sony’s product page does not establish that sequence.
- Turn the speaker off and on, reconnect Bluetooth, and try again.
- If the app shows an update, install it and repeat the mode selection.
The EQ slider moves but the sound seems unchanged
- Confirm the change was made on the active SRS-ULT500 device page and saved or applied.
- Lower volume before boosting. At maximum volume, Sony blocks further positive EQ increases.
- Use one reference track and make a larger, temporary test move so the result is audible; return to a subtle setting afterward.
- Check that your phone’s audio output is the speaker and that another app is not applying its own equalizer.
The bass sounds distorted after an increase
- Lower the boosted low band and reduce overall volume.
- Try the other ULT mode at the same volume instead of stacking a large EQ boost on top of it.
- Move the speaker away from a corner or hard wall and retest.
- If distortion remains with modest settings, return EQ to its default and check Sony’s support guidance for the current firmware.
The app cannot find the speaker
- Bring the phone close to the speaker and enable Bluetooth.
- Close Sound Connect, reopen it, and select the SRS-ULT500 from the device list.
- Disconnect the speaker from another phone that may still be controlling it.
- Restart both devices if pairing remains stuck, then check the app and Help Guide for model-specific recovery steps.
Use the Help Guide when labels differ
Sony’s manuals page is the authoritative place for the current SRS-ULT500 Help Guide. The page identifies a September 18, 2026 Help Guide release, but app screens and firmware behavior can change independently. If your speaker’s button behavior or Sound Connect labels do not match this article, follow the guide for your region and software rather than guessing at a press pattern.
The guide is especially important for confirming whether a firmware revision changes how the ULT button switches modes, how LIVE is assigned, or where the EQ control appears. This article intentionally does not claim an exact number of presses because that sequence is not established by the cited product page.

- Place the ULT TOWER 5 in its normal listening position.
- Connect it to Sound Connect and verify the SRS-ULT500 model name.
- Set a moderate volume below the maximum.
- Compare ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, and LIVE with the same short music passage.
- Select one mode and open the 10-band custom EQ.
- Change only one or two bands, applying small moves and listening after each change.
- Save the setting if the app provides that option.
- Raise volume to your normal level and check for boom, harshness, or distortion.
- If a boost is rejected, lower volume and try again; that is the documented output-limit behavior.
- Record the mode and EQ values you like so you can restore them after experimenting.
Bottom line
Use the speaker or Sound Connect to choose among ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, and LIVE, and use Sound Connect’s 10-band custom EQ for bass adjustments. Sony does not publish enough information to promise a specific bass difference between ULT1 and ULT2, so compare them at equal volume and tune by ear. Keep the volume below maximum when boosting EQ; the SRS-ULT500 deliberately blocks positive EQ changes at its output limit.
