Sony ULT Tower 5 Review: Big Bass, Party Features and a $449.99 Launch Price

The Sony ULT TOWER 5 is a 28-pound party speaker built around punchy bass, flexible wired connections and karaoke-friendly features. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found its low end powerful without overwhelming vocals and treble, but its $449.99 US launch price, substantial weight and splash-only IPX4 rating mean it is best for people who want a capable speaker to move between rooms or gatherings—not a lightweight outdoor companion. That price is “affordable” mainly in comparison with Sony’s larger ULT party speakers, not as a blanket value claim.

What the Sony ULT TOWER 5 is—and what it costs

Sony identifies the SRS-ULT500 as the ULT TOWER 5, a battery-powered wireless party speaker positioned for smaller gatherings and easier transport than its larger ULT TOWER models. Sony announced it on September 1, 2026, with a US suggested retail price of $449.99 and availability beginning that month through Sony.com, Best Buy, Amazon and authorized dealers. Those are launch details, not a guarantee of today’s street price; check the current Sony product listing before buying.

For context within Sony’s September 2026 US lineup, the Tower 5 launched below the Tower 7 and Tower MAX. Sony listed Canadian suggested prices as well; these are manufacturer-announced prices, not a current retailer comparison.

Model US suggested price at launch Canadian suggested price at launch
ULT TOWER 5 $449.99 USD $599.99 CAD
ULT TOWER 7 $649.99 USD $799.99 CAD
ULT TOWER MAX $1,499.99 USD $2,099 CAD

These prices, announced by Sony Electronics on September 1, 2026, establish that the Tower 5 is the least expensive of those three models at launch. They do not show that it is inexpensive against the broader party-speaker market or that its current price is unchanged.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How it sounds: bass first, with other elements still in the mix

In its September 26, 2026 review, Tom’s Guide describes the bass as deep and physical, with vocals and treble holding up in the reviewer’s listening. The reviewer also found the FLAT profile energetic rather than lifeless. These are listening impressions, not independent lab measurements or a guarantee that every room, track or volume setting will sound the same.

Tom’s Guide reports a 300 W total output, one 9-inch woofer, two mid-range drivers and two 2.3-inch tweeters. Treat the output figure as the review’s reported specification; it is not, by itself, a measure of how loud or clear the speaker will sound in a particular space.

Sony lists ULT1, ULT2 and FLAT modes, plus LIVE mode through the Sony Sound Connect app. The company describes the speaker as delivering “Deep bass and powerful sound pressure beyond its size”; that is Sony’s marketing characterization, rather than a test result. Sony’s launch announcement specifically attributes its named 360° Party Sound feature to the Tower MAX and Tower 7, so that feature should not be assumed for the Tower 5.

Connections and party features

The Tower 5 is more than a Bluetooth-only speaker. Tom’s Guide reports Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs, multipoint pairing for two devices, USB-C and USB-A playback, a 6.3 mm microphone/instrument jack, RCA line input, balanced XLR input and output, and Party Chain. The review says Party Chain can link up to 100 compatible speakers; that maximum is the review’s reported claim, not one independently verified here against Sony documentation.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • For karaoke: the 6.3 mm jack supports a microphone use case, and Sony says its ULT MIC 1 is sold separately. Check the microphone’s compatibility and current availability before purchase.
  • For instruments or DJ equipment: the microphone/instrument jack, RCA input and balanced XLR input provide wired options beyond Bluetooth. Confirm that your source’s output and cable match the connection you plan to use.
  • For shared listening: multipoint is reported for two devices, while Party Chain is intended for compatible speaker linking. The review’s up-to-100 figure should not be treated as a universal compatibility guarantee.
  • For sound control: the modes include ULT1, ULT2 and FLAT; LIVE is available through Sony Sound Connect.

Battery life, handling and water resistance

Battery: up to 20 hours, under variable conditions

Sony advertises up to 20 hours of battery life. “Up to” is a manufacturer maximum, not a runtime promise at every volume: Sony notes that volume, lighting, temperature, music and settings affect performance. A louder party with lighting enabled may not match the advertised maximum.

Portability: movable, but not lightweight

Tom’s Guide lists dimensions of 21 × 14.1 × 11 inches and a weight of 28 lb. Four carry handles help with moving it, but the weight makes it a poor fit if you expect to carry a speaker long distances or frequently take one on foot. Its portability is best understood as manageable transport between nearby locations, not effortless mobility.

Water resistance: splashes, not immersion

Sony rates the Tower 5 IPX4 when it is upright and its ports and covers are closed. That rating addresses splashing water, not submersion, and does not establish dust resistance. It is not a reason to leave the speaker exposed to heavy rain or use it near water without care.

Who should buy it?

It makes sense if

  • You want pronounced bass for parties and value the listening balance Tom’s Guide’s reviewer described.
  • You need wired connections for a microphone, instrument or audio equipment, rather than relying only on Bluetooth.
  • You will mostly use it near an outlet or can recharge it between gatherings, and the advertised maximum runtime suits your plans.
  • You want a less expensive entry into Sony’s September 2026 ULT Tower lineup than the Tower 7 or Tower MAX, and the Tower 5’s feature set is sufficient for your use.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a compact speaker that is easy to carry over distance; at 28 lb, this one is substantial.
  • Your use involves submersion, dusty environments or exposure beyond the conditions covered by IPX4.
  • You are choosing primarily on the assumption that $449.99 is a market-wide bargain. Sony’s launch price only establishes its position relative to two larger models in its own lineup; a wider value judgment needs current, like-for-like alternatives.

Verdict

The ULT TOWER 5 is a compelling candidate for bass-forward parties where wired flexibility, lighting and karaoke-ready connectivity matter. Tom’s Guide’s favorable sound impressions make the case for its performance, while its 28 lb weight, conditional splash resistance and $449.99 US launch price define the trade-offs. Buy it for the combination of sound and party utility—not on the assumption that “affordable” means cheap or that its maximum battery figure applies to every event.
