For most everyday buyers, the JBL Charge 5 is the better all-rounder because its published battery rating is up to 20 hours and it is designed to double as a portable power bank. The Sony ULT FIELD 1 is the better choice when you value a lighter, strap-friendly form and Sony’s ULT presentation more than maximum runtime. This comparison uses the exact models Sony ULT FIELD 1 and JBL Charge 5; “Sony portable speaker” is too broad a description for a fair match.
What is actually being compared?
Sony sells several portable Bluetooth speakers. The ULT FIELD 1 is one model, while the SRS-XB100 is another example from Sony’s range. Sony UK’s 2023 support documentation identifies the SRS-XB100 as an IP67 wireless speaker, showing why a comparison that simply says “Sony portable speaker” can lead to the wrong conclusion about size, battery life, sound and features.

“Up to” figures are maximum published claims, not guaranteed runtime at every volume. Playback level, Bluetooth activity, audio content, temperature and battery age can all change how long a speaker runs in practice. Compare the claims as a useful baseline, not as a laboratory result between the two products.
Battery life: JBL Charge 5 wins on the published numbers
JBL’s 20-hour claim
JBL/Harman describes Charge 5 as having “an incredible 20 hours of battery life,” allowing a full day of listening without planning a recharge around a normal outing. That extra capacity is valuable for travel, work sessions, garden use and weekends when a charger may not be nearby. It also leaves more margin when you listen at higher volume, although the published figure itself does not specify a test volume or playlist.
Sony’s 12-hour claim
Sony Electronics rates ULT FIELD 1 for “up to 12 hours of playback per charge.” Twelve hours covers many commutes, workouts and short trips, especially if you recharge overnight. It is eight hours below the Charge 5’s published maximum, so frequent listeners will need to connect the Sony more often.
How to use the difference
- Choose Charge 5 if you routinely spend a full day away from an outlet or want several days of moderate listening between charges.
- Choose ULT FIELD 1 if your typical session is a few hours and a smaller, easier-to-carry speaker matters more than reserve capacity.
- Do not treat either number as a guarantee at maximum volume. Keep your own usage pattern in mind, and allow for reduced capacity as the battery ages.
Water and dust resistance: equal rating, limited promise
Both ULT FIELD 1 and Charge 5 publish an IP67 rating. The “6” indicates dust protection at the rated level, while the “7” refers to protection against temporary immersion under the conditions defined for that rating. It does not mean the speaker is indestructible, permanently waterproof, or safe in every swimming-pool, seawater or high-pressure-water situation.
Beach and pool use
An IP67 rating is reassuring for splashes, rain and an accidental drop into shallow water when the speaker is used as directed. Rinse and dry the exterior according to the manufacturer’s care guidance after exposure to salt, sand or chlorinated water. Do not assume that a wet charging port can be connected safely; let the speaker dry completely before charging.

- Outdoor-Proof Speaker: Portable design with IPX7 waterproof protection to safeguard against splashes, waves, and water vapor. Get incredible sounds at home, on camping trips, or for outdoor adventures.
- 24H Non-Stop Music: With Anker's world-renowned power management technology and a 5,200mAh Li-ion battery, the soundcore 2 speaker delivers a full day of great sound.
- Powerful Sound: The speaker features 12W power with enhanced bass from dual neodymium drivers. An advanced digital signal processor ensures pounding bass and zero distortion at any volume.
- Intense Bass: Our exclusive BassUp technology and a patented spiral bass port boost low-end frequencies to make the beats hit even harder. The soundcore 2 speaker delivers vibrant audio for home theater nights, beach parties, and sitting around a campfire.
- Grab, Go, Listen: A classic design refined with simple controls and effortless portability. Easy to use and take anywhere, and supports wireless stereo pairing.
Dust, sand and impact
Dust resistance does not make either model immune to scratches, blocked grilles or damage from drops. Keep sand out of buttons and ports, avoid placing the speaker where it can be crushed, and use the strap or a stable surface rather than hanging it from an insecure object. The rating describes ingress protection, not drop resistance.
Portability: Sony’s strap versus JBL’s larger utility format
Why the ULT FIELD 1 suits travel
Sony emphasizes a multi-way strap on ULT FIELD 1. A strap can make the speaker easier to carry by hand, attach to a bag or position in a compact space, depending on how you use it. That is useful on walks, public transport and beach trips where you may not want to hold a speaker continuously. The strap also gives you more placement options than a speaker that must sit upright on a flat surface.
Why the Charge 5 suits day-trip utility
Charge 5 uses JBL’s larger Charge format and is marketed not only as a speaker but also as a portable power bank. That design favors listeners who accept a bulkier package in exchange for longer rated runtime and the ability to support a phone during a day out. The speaker’s size can be an advantage for stable placement outdoors, but it may occupy more room in a small bag than a strap-oriented model.
Portability decision
- Select ULT FIELD 1 when you carry the speaker frequently, switch between carrying positions or prioritize a compact-feeling travel setup.
- Select Charge 5 when you have room for a larger speaker and want battery reserve plus charging utility during an outing.
- Check the listed dimensions and weight for the exact regional product page before ordering; the supplied specifications establish the strap and format emphasis but do not provide a shared weight comparison.
Can the JBL Charge 5 charge your phone?
JBL positions Charge 5 with power-bank functionality, which means the speaker is intended to provide power to a compatible mobile device through its charging connection. The supplied product information does not establish every cable, output limit or behavior for every regional hardware revision. Before relying on it for an emergency charge, inspect the ports and manual for the exact unit you will buy and carry the correct cable.
Using a speaker as a power bank also consumes the speaker’s stored energy. A phone that receives a top-up can therefore reduce the time available for music. Treat the feature as useful backup power rather than a replacement for a dedicated battery pack. ULT FIELD 1 is not documented in the supplied information as offering the same phone-charging function, so do not assume feature parity.

Sound: choose by taste unless measurements are available
The published specifications supplied for these models do not provide a controlled, independent comparison of bass extension, vocal balance, maximum loudness, distortion or dispersion. It is therefore not accurate to declare one universally better-sounding speaker from the model names alone.
What “better” can mean
- Bass presentation: Some listeners prefer a strong, energetic low end for electronic music and hip-hop; others want bass that leaves more space for vocals and acoustic instruments.
- Vocal balance: Podcasts, news and singer-songwriter recordings reveal whether speech and midrange detail are easy for you to follow at normal listening distance.
- Loudness and room size: A speaker that sounds full at a desk may not cover a noisy patio in the same way. Perceived loudness depends on placement, surroundings and your hearing as well as the hardware.
- ULT presentation: Sony’s ULT branding signals a particular presentation preference, but the branding alone does not establish a measured advantage over Charge 5.
A fair listening check
- Use the same phone, streaming service and listening distance for both speakers.
- Disable any phone-level equalizer that would affect only one test, then begin with each speaker’s default sound mode.
- Play familiar tracks that include vocals, bass and busy arrangements at a comfortable, matched loudness.
- Repeat with a spoken podcast and a quieter recording; note clarity, fatigue and whether details remain audible when you move around the room.
- Test outdoors if outdoor use is your priority, because reflections and background noise can change your preference.
This process identifies your taste; it is not a controlled laboratory measurement and should not be reported as one.

Home office and kitchen
Either model can serve as a wireless speaker for background music, radio or podcasts. Charge 5’s longer published runtime reduces charging interruptions if it moves from room to room all day. ULT FIELD 1’s strap can help when you carry it between the kitchen, office and balcony.
Commuting and travel
For frequent walking or transit, the multi-way strap gives ULT FIELD 1 a practical handling advantage. Charge 5 is attractive when your travel day is long and you want up to 20 hours of stated battery life, but confirm that its size fits your luggage and that you can protect the speaker from crushing forces.
Beach, park and poolside
Both models have the same published IP67 rating, so neither has a specification advantage for ordinary splash and dust exposure. Charge 5’s power-bank positioning is useful when your phone battery is the limiting factor. ULT FIELD 1 is easier to justify when the main challenge is carrying the speaker comfortably.

Small gatherings
Choose based on the listening character you prefer after a direct audition. Neither the supplied Sony nor JBL information establishes a controlled winner for loudness or sound quality, and room acoustics can matter as much as the speaker choice.
Emergency backup power
Charge 5 is the relevant option because JBL markets power-bank functionality. Carry a suitable cable and remember that charging a phone draws energy away from music playback. ULT FIELD 1 should not be selected for this requirement without independent confirmation of a charging-output feature.
Which model should you buy?
Choose Sony ULT FIELD 1 if these statements describe you
- You carry the speaker often and want a multi-way strap.
- Your normal listening sessions fit within a 12-hour maximum claim and you usually have access to charging.
- You prefer Sony’s ULT-oriented presentation after listening for yourself.
- You want IP67-rated water and dust protection without making phone charging a requirement.
Choose JBL Charge 5 if these statements describe you
- You value the longer published battery claim of up to 20 hours.
- You want a speaker marketed as a portable power bank for compatible phone charging.
- You are comfortable carrying a larger Charge-format speaker for day trips or outdoor sessions.
- You want one device to cover music and some backup-power duties, subject to the exact regional revision.
Wait and verify the model if these statements describe you
- A retailer’s listing does not clearly say Charge 5 or Charge 6.
- The price seems unusually low and the product title mixes generations.
- You need a specific charging port, output behavior, size or weight that is not shown in the listing.
- You are buying outside the market where the cited specifications were published.
Charge 5 versus Charge 6: the generation issue
What Hi-Fi? identifies JBL Charge 6 as the successor to Charge 5 in 2026 and lists 20-hour battery life, IP68 protection, USB-C charging and power-bank functionality for the newer model. Those details belong to Charge 6, not automatically to every Charge 5 listing. Do not transfer IP68, USB-C or any other Charge 6 feature to Charge 5 without checking the product documentation for your unit.
If a current retailer mainly sells Charge 6, compare that exact model with ULT FIELD 1 instead of using an old Charge 5 review as a proxy. If Charge 5 remains available at a lower price, decide whether its established IP67 specification and 20-hour claim meet your needs, then record the purchase date and region for warranty and support purposes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuying checklist
- Confirm the exact name: Sony ULT FIELD 1, JBL Charge 5 or JBL Charge 6 should appear consistently in the title, specifications and checkout.
- Check the publication date and country: Battery and protection claims cited here come from Sony Electronics (2024), JBL/Harman (2021), Sony UK (2023) and What Hi-Fi? (2026). Regional stock can differ.
- Read “up to” correctly: Treat 12 and 20 hours as maximum published claims, not guaranteed results at every volume.
- Inspect charging details: Confirm whether the exact Charge revision supports the phone-charging behavior you need and carry a compatible cable.
- Match the carrying method: Choose Sony’s multi-way strap for handling flexibility or JBL’s larger format for runtime and power-bank utility.
- Check protection limits: IP67 helps with dust and temporary immersion under defined test conditions; it does not cover every kind of water, impact or misuse.
- Listen before deciding on sound: Use familiar music and spoken audio at matched loudness rather than relying on branding or a generic “best sound” claim.
- Record the transaction: Keep the model number, seller, country and purchase date, especially when a previous generation and successor are sold together.
Bottom line
JBL Charge 5 is the stronger everyday all-rounder when your priorities are maximum published battery life, outdoor practicality and the ability to use the speaker as backup power for a phone. Sony ULT FIELD 1 is the more compelling portability-first choice because its multi-way strap makes carrying and placement easier, while its 12-hour rating still covers many ordinary outings. Both publish IP67 protection, and neither can be called the universal sound-quality winner without controlled measurements and your own listening preference. Before purchasing, identify the exact Charge generation available in your market, because Charge 6 has succeeded Charge 5 in current 2026 coverage.
