That is not a one-click, no-work upgrade: developers may need a few days to tune settings and texture streaming, according to Sony graphics engineer Daniel Craig as quoted by Wccftech. Results also vary by game and graphics mode.
What QSSR is—and how it differs from PSSR
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI-assisted upscaling library for the standard PS5. It reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution game render, with the aim of improving visible detail and image stability. Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5 performance, building on work from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes QSSR as a new performance tier for the console.

Sony positions the two technologies for different hardware tiers: PSSR remains its “gold standard” on PS5 Pro, while QSSR brings AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5. Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability on that console, but its announcement does not provide a quantified, independent comparison against other upscalers. The technologies are related; QSSR is not simply a new name for PSSR.

Craig described QSSR as “fundamentally a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR,” according to Wccftech’s October 2, 2026 report on his Digital Foundry interview. In practical terms, games with an existing PSSR implementation may be able to adopt QSSR without rebuilding their rendering pipeline from scratch.

“Drop-in” describes the relationship between the upscaling implementations, not a guaranteed automatic port. Craig said teams may need “perhaps a few days” to tune game settings. In some cases, that can include changing texture-streaming settings so higher-quality mip levels—the progressively lower-detail versions of textures used at a distance—remain resident when needed. The few-days estimate is Craig’s reported expectation, not a schedule promised for every game.
What early performance reports show
Early measurements reported for QSSR are specific to individual games, output targets, and modes. They do not establish one universal frame-rate or processing cost.

- Marvel’s Wolverine, 4K target: Wccftech reports Digital Foundry observed an 8–10 FPS difference in demanding cutscenes when comparing QSSR on standard PS5 with PSSR on PS5 Pro. This is a comparison across different console hardware as well as upscalers, not a controlled estimate of QSSR’s cost on a single console.
- Marvel’s Wolverine, 1440p target: the same Wccftech report cites an approximately 1.5–1.8 ms difference and a similar 8–10 FPS difference in the reported comparison. It says dynamic resolution scaling in the 60 Hz performance mode reduced the gap.
- Marvel’s Wolverine, 864p to 1440p reconstruction: Dot Esports’ summary of Digital Foundry’s early work reports QSSR cost roughly 1.5–1.8 ms compared with Insomniac’s existing upscaler. For 2160p output in fidelity mode, the summary gives a cost of around 4.4 ms. These are different rendering contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Ghost of Yōtei, uncapped VRR performance mode: Wccftech says Digital Foundry found QSSR ran almost identically to the game’s stock FSR 3 implementation. The report noted that the comparison needed further confirmation with matching input and output resolutions.
The measurements above are early findings reported on October 2, 2026 by Wccftech and Dot Esports. They help illustrate why performance needs to be assessed title by title: resolution target, graphics mode, dynamic resolution behavior, and the comparison upscaler all matter.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games. The company said each received QSSR as an optional graphics setting in patches released October 1, 2026. Sony also says it plans to make the library broadly available to PlayStation developers.

That broad availability is not confirmation that any other existing game will receive a QSSR patch. Support depends on each developer choosing to implement it and, for released games, issuing an update. Sony’s announcement does not provide a schedule or a list of additional titles.
What the retrofit means for PS5 owners
QSSR is a software feature for the standard PS5, not a reason for an existing owner to buy another console. If a supported game offers it, the choice is an optional graphics setting; the visual and performance trade-offs depend on that game’s implementation and mode. Sony’s stated goal is more detail and image stability on standard PS5, while early reports show that the performance cost is not identical across titles or output conditions.
