Sony PULSE Explore vs. Pulse 3D headset: which is better for PS5?

Choose PULSE Explore if you want lightweight in-ear earbuds, a charging case, portability and a phone connected over Bluetooth while you play through PlayStation Link. Choose PULSE 3D if you prefer an over-ear fit, physical controls, a 3.5 mm wired option and Sony’s longer single-charge estimate. Both can deliver PS5 3D Audio in supported games; Sony’s official information does not establish that either sounds objectively better.

What each headset is designed to be

PULSE Explore: compact earbuds for gaming and mobile use

PULSE Explore is a pair of true-wireless-style in-ear earbuds built around a small charging case. Sony positions them for portable gaming, so they make sense when you move between a PS5, a handheld setup or a phone. Each earbud weighs approximately 6.1 g with a medium tip, while the case is approximately 71 g. The included PlayStation Link USB adapter weighs about 4 g, according to Sony’s safety documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony describes Explore’s drivers as planar magnetic and its microphones as using AI-enhanced noise rejection. Those are Sony’s product descriptions; the available official material does not independently measure frequency response, isolation, microphone quality or latency. The practical advantage is the earbud form: there is no large headband in a travel bag, and the case supplies additional charging between sessions.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

PULSE 3D: a conventional over-ear console headset

PULSE 3D uses a familiar over-ear design with plush earpads and a padded headband. The headset weighs 292 g. Sony says it is fine-tuned for PS5 and PS4 and supports compatible Windows and macOS computers through its included wireless adapter.

The over-ear format gives you a larger physical enclosure and controls located on the headset itself. Sony lists two built-in microphones, a mute button, volume controls, game/chat balance and a dedicated mic-monitoring button. The product is less compact than Explore, but it behaves like a traditional console headset and does not require removing earbuds from a case every time you want to play.

Wireless connection and device switching

Explore uses PlayStation Link and Bluetooth

For PS5 gameplay, Explore uses the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Sony describes PlayStation Link as a low-latency, lossless wireless connection; “lossless” is Sony’s claim rather than an independent measurement. Explore also supports Bluetooth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony Support documents a PS5-and-phone example in which Explore remains connected to the console through PlayStation Link while also connecting to a phone through Bluetooth. In that supported combination, a phone call can be heard in the earbuds while PS5 audio continues. Sony cautions that simultaneous connections depend on compatible PlayStation Link and Bluetooth devices, so this should not be generalized to every phone, console or accessory.

PULSE 3D uses a dedicated 2.4 GHz adapter

PULSE 3D communicates over 2.4 GHz radio through its supplied wireless adapter. The instruction manual gives an approximate maximum range of 10 m, although walls, interference and the position of the console can reduce usable distance. The reviewed documentation does not describe a simultaneous Bluetooth mode for PULSE 3D.

That distinction matters if you answer calls or listen to another device while gaming. Explore is the only model here for which Sony explicitly documents PS Link and phone Bluetooth operating together. PULSE 3D is the simpler single-adapter console arrangement.

Battery life, charging and portability

Explore’s battery is split between earbuds and case

Sony rates the Explore earbuds for up to five hours of use and says the charging case provides up to 10 additional hours. The second figure is reserve energy delivered through recharging; it does not mean 15 hours of uninterrupted use before the earbuds ever need to be placed in the case. Actual runtime changes with volume, microphone use, wireless conditions and other factors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the earbuds are separate, you need to carry and periodically charge the case. That arrangement is useful for travel and short sessions, but it introduces another item to keep charged and another place where an earbud can be misplaced.

PULSE 3D offers the longer single-session estimate

The PULSE 3D manual lists up to 12 hours of use at mid volume. Sony labels this an approximate manufacturer figure, so louder playback and other conditions can reduce it. There is no charging case: the headset itself is charged with the supplied USB cable.

If you regularly play long sessions without returning hardware to a case, the 12-hour single-charge estimate is easier to manage. If you carry your gaming audio between locations, Explore’s smaller earbuds and case are more convenient even though the earbuds’ uninterrupted estimate is shorter.

Controls, microphones and voice chat

Why PULSE 3D is easier to adjust without touching the console

PULSE 3D puts mute and volume controls on the headset, along with separate game/chat balance and mic monitoring. Mic monitoring lets you hear a controlled amount of your own voice, which can help prevent shouting when the earcups block outside sound. These controls are available during wireless use; Sony says they are not supported when the headset is connected through the 3.5 mm cable.

The headset has two built-in microphones that Sony describes as noise-cancelling. That wording identifies the intended feature, not a guarantee of speech quality in every room or game-chat service.

Explore prioritizes a small in-ear design

Explore has built-in microphones, and Sony advertises AI-enhanced noise rejection for its PULSE microphones. In-ear microphones sit closer to the mouth than many boomless over-ear designs, but fit and ear-tip seal can change how your voice is captured. Sony’s official pages do not provide an independent microphone ranking against PULSE 3D.

For players who frequently adjust game/chat balance or mute themselves, PULSE 3D’s clearly documented physical controls are the safer choice. Explore is better suited to people who value compactness and are comfortable managing controls on the earbuds or through the console.

Wired audio and compatibility

PULSE 3D includes a 3.5 mm fallback

The PULSE 3D box includes a 1.2 m audio cable, USB cable and wireless adapter. Sony documents the 3.5 mm cable for PlayStation VR and mobile devices. This can keep the headset useful when wireless audio is unavailable or when you need to connect to a device with a headphone jack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important limitation: Sony says the headset’s built-in controls are unavailable over the 3.5 mm connection. Volume, mute and game/chat functions must therefore be handled by the connected device when you use the cable.

Explore is wireless in the reviewed documentation

The official Explore material reviewed for this comparison describes PlayStation Link and Bluetooth but does not establish a wired audio input. Do not buy Explore expecting a 3.5 mm emergency connection unless Sony’s current documentation for your exact model states otherwise.

PS5 3D Audio and sound-quality claims

Sony says PULSE 3D was specifically tuned to deliver the 3D Audio made possible by the PS5. Sony’s current PULSE overview also says Tempest 3D Audio can be heard through compatible headphones in supported games. That means both Explore and PULSE 3D can be used for PS5 spatial audio when the game and device support it.

“3D audio” does not make PULSE 3D automatically superior. Spatial presentation depends on the game’s audio mix, PS5 settings, the listener and the headphone’s fit. The official sources reviewed here contain no controlled listening test, frequency-response measurement or independent latency comparison. Sony’s PlayStation Link lossless description likewise remains a manufacturer claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on fit, controls, connection habits and battery design rather than assuming the name PULSE 3D guarantees a universal sound-quality win.

Comfort and fit: the decision is personal

When Explore’s fit is an advantage

Explore’s approximately 6.1 g per earbud is substantially less hardware on your head than a 292 g over-ear headset. The case also makes transport straightforward. Earbuds can be preferable if a headband interferes with glasses, hair or a chair’s headrest.

In-ear fit is not universal, however. Ear canals differ, and a loose seal can reduce bass and let in more room noise. A tight seal can become uncomfortable during long sessions. Sony’s weight figure does not predict whether the supplied tips will suit you.

When PULSE 3D’s over-ear fit is an advantage

The plush earpads and padded headband spread contact over a larger area. Some players find that less intrusive than having an earbud in each ear for hours. Others find any over-ear headset warm or heavy, especially in a heated room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At 292 g, PULSE 3D is not a lightweight earbud substitute. Its advantage is the conventional headset experience: stable placement, immediately reachable controls and no separate case to open before play.

Which one is better for different PS5 players?

Your priority Better fit Reason
Small travel kit PULSE Explore Earbuds and a compact case are easier to pack than an over-ear headset.
Phone calls while gaming PULSE Explore Sony documents simultaneous PlayStation Link and Bluetooth for a supported PS5-and-phone setup.
Long single charge PULSE 3D Sony’s manual lists up to 12 hours at mid volume, compared with up to five hours for Explore’s earbuds before recharging in the case.
Physical game/chat controls PULSE 3D Mute, volume, game/chat balance and mic monitoring are documented on the headset.
Wired fallback or PS VR/mobile cable PULSE 3D A 1.2 m 3.5 mm cable is included, although headset controls do not work over it.
Preference for earbuds PULSE Explore The in-ear format avoids a headband and keeps each earbud approximately 6.1 g with medium tips.
Preference for over-ear pads PULSE 3D Its plush earpads and headband provide the traditional closed headset form.

How to set up PULSE Explore on PS5

  1. Insert the supplied PlayStation Link USB adapter into the PS5.
  2. Turn on the Explore earbuds and follow the pairing behavior described in Sony’s current setup instructions. Keep the earbuds near the adapter during first pairing.
  3. Confirm that PS5 audio output and microphone input are assigned to the PlayStation Link device in the console’s sound settings.
  4. Adjust game/chat balance and volume using the available earbud or PS5 controls.
  5. For simultaneous phone use, pair the earbuds with the phone over Bluetooth while the PS5 connection remains active. Use only combinations Sony identifies as supported by PlayStation Link.
  6. Return the earbuds to the case after play so they can recharge. Treat the five-hour figure as an upper estimate, not a guaranteed runtime.

Exact menu wording can change with PS5 system software. If pairing fails, remove the adapter, restart the console, place both earbuds in the case, then retry the documented pairing process rather than assuming the earbuds are defective.

How to set up PULSE 3D

  1. Connect the supplied wireless adapter to the PS5, PS4 or compatible Windows or macOS computer.
  2. Power on the headset and allow it to establish the 2.4 GHz connection with the adapter.
  3. On PS5, open the sound settings and select the wireless headset for output and microphone input if it is not selected automatically.
  4. Use the headset’s mute, volume, game/chat balance and mic-monitoring controls to set your preferred mix.
  5. For PlayStation VR or a mobile device, connect the supplied 1.2 m 3.5 mm cable. Remember that the headset controls are unavailable in wired mode.
  6. Charge the headset with the supplied USB cable when the battery is low. Sony’s up-to-12-hour estimate assumes mid-volume use.

Troubleshooting the common decision points

Explore connects to the phone but not the PS5

Check that the PlayStation Link adapter is firmly inserted and that the earbuds are charged. Bluetooth pairing with a phone does not replace the PlayStation Link pairing required for PS5 audio. Restart the console and retry with the earbuds close to the adapter.

Explore and the phone do not stay connected together

Simultaneous operation is documented for supported PlayStation Link and Bluetooth combinations, not every device. Confirm that the phone’s Bluetooth connection is active, then verify that your adapter and earbuds are the supported models Sony describes on its PlayStation Link support page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PULSE 3D has no controls when connected by cable

This is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault. Sony states that the headset controls are unavailable over the 3.5 mm connection. Use the source device’s volume and mute controls, or return to wireless mode.

Wireless range is inconsistent

PULSE 3D’s manual gives an approximate 10 m maximum range under stated conditions. Keep the adapter away from obstructions and sources of wireless interference. Explore’s usable range can likewise vary with the console position, radio interference and the connected devices.

Prices, availability and what the official specifications do not answer

The supplied Sony documentation does not establish current prices, retailer stock, regional color availability or promotional terms. Those details vary by country and date, so check the local PlayStation store or authorized retailers immediately before buying.

These sources also do not verify independent sound quality, comfort rankings, microphone performance, durability or measured latency. Sony’s planar-magnetic, AI-enhanced and lossless descriptions explain the intended technology, but they are not substitutes for controlled testing. Replacement ear-tip and cushion compatibility is not established here; verify the exact model before purchasing spare parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final verdict

For most mobile-minded PS5 players, PULSE Explore is the more flexible choice: it is compact, supports a documented PS Link-plus-phone Bluetooth setup and comes with a charging case. Its trade-offs are the shorter five-hour earbud estimate, dependence on the case and in-ear fit.

PULSE 3D is the better match for players who want a traditional over-ear headset, on-headset game/chat controls, a 3.5 mm cable or the longer single-charge figure Sony lists. Select it for those practical advantages, not because the official information proves it sounds better. Both are valid PS5 3D Audio options in compatible games.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
