Sony’s new NW-WM1ZM3 and NW-WM1AM3 are premium Android-based hi-res players, not ordinary MP3 devices. The ZM3 is priced at nearly twice the AM3 in the US, with Sony attributing the gap mainly to its copper chassis and flagship construction.
Two WM1 Walkmans arrive with five-figure-audiophile ambitions
Sony announced the NW-WM1ZM3 and NW-WM1AM3 on October 15, 2026, in the United States and October 16, 2026, in Japan. They are the company’s newest WM1-series high-resolution digital audio players; the same announcement also covers the related NW-ZX900, but the WM1 pair is the flagship comparison.

Prices: the reason the launch is causing sticker shock

Using Sony’s two US suggested prices, the ZM3 costs about 1.97 times as much as the AM3. That is a calculation from the published prices, not a ratio Sony states. Sony describes the Japanese figures as estimated market prices before release; individual retailers set their own final prices. Neither yen figure should be treated as an exact US-dollar conversion without a dated exchange rate, taxes and regional pricing.

The previous WM1 generation used 256GB in the ZM2 and 128GB in the AM2. Sony’s final M3 storage can vary by market or product page, so check the specification for the exact regional model before ordering.

What the copper construction is supposed to change
Sony says the ZM3’s 4N oxygen-free-copper body is intended to provide powerful bass, a wider soundstage and extended high frequencies. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent listening-test results. The AM3 uses an aluminium-alloy main chassis but retains a gold-plated oxygen-free-copper rear chassis, giving it part of the same materials approach at a lower price.

Battery, streaming and everyday use
Sony quotes up to 35 hours for 128kbps MP3 playback and up to 31 hours when using offline streaming mode on both WM1 models. The figures are maximum claims; display brightness, wireless activity, file format, volume, amplifier mode and other settings affect real runtime. Offline streaming means downloaded content, not continuous Wi-Fi listening.
Android and Wi-Fi let owners use compatible streaming services, download albums and manage local files from the larger 5.5-inch screen. Sony’s DSD Remastering Engine can process streamed or downloaded material, although the company’s announcement does not establish how that processing will sound with every service or recording.

Are the new Walkmans worth their prices?
The AM3 is the rational WM1 entry point
For most buyers who specifically want Sony’s latest WM1 electronics, the AM3 is the practical choice. It includes the same Android and Wi-Fi foundation, S-Master HX amplifier, look-ahead noise shaper, DSD Remastering Engine, updated capacitor arrangement and balanced-output filter changes. Its lower price avoids paying nearly another $2,900 for the flagship chassis.
The ZM3 is a materials purchase
The ZM3’s justification is concentrated in its physical construction: a precision-machined 4N copper main body, copper rear chassis and gold-plated low-resistance screws. Buyers must decide whether those materials and Sony’s claimed sonic benefits justify a price that is almost double the AM3. The launch information does not provide an independent measurement showing that the ZM3 delivers performance proportional to the difference.

Who should skip both
If you mainly stream from a phone, use ordinary Bluetooth headphones or do not maintain a local high-resolution library, a dedicated player at either price is difficult to justify. These models target enthusiasts who value a separate audio device, wired listening and premium component construction.
