It is a good fit for console gamers and viewers who sit near the center of the screen, thanks to responsive gaming, strong native contrast, and good SDR brightness. Its main drawbacks are the lack of local dimming—which limits HDR highlight impact—and narrow viewing angles.
What is the Sony KD-65X85K?
The KD-65X85K is Sony’s 65-inch model in the 2022 X85K series. Sony lists the screen as 65 inches class, with a 64.5-inch diagonal, and specifies Google TV and its 4K HDR Processor X1. See Sony’s KD-65X85K product page and official specifications.

RTINGS’ review, updated October 6, 2023, was most recently retested on September 26, 2025 for brightness measurements and uniformity photos. RTINGS notes that its results use an older test bench, so some scores may not compare directly with TVs tested under its newer methodology. Read the Sony X85K review at RTINGS.
How good is the picture?
Contrast and dark scenes
RTINGS reports high native contrast and good black uniformity, which can make dark scenes look solid. However, the X85K has no local dimming. The backlight therefore cannot selectively brighten highlights while keeping other parts of the image dark, limiting the punch of HDR highlights compared with a TV that has local dimming.

Brightness, reflections, and upscaling
RTINGS finds good SDR brightness and good reflection handling, and reports no issues upscaling lower-resolution content. That combination makes the TV a reasonable option for everyday viewing, sports, and many bright-room setups, though it does not establish standout HDR highlight performance.
Seating position
The viewing angles are narrow, according to RTINGS. Picture quality falls off for people sitting far to either side, so a wide sofa or multiple rows of seating may make this a less suitable choice than a TV with better off-angle performance.

Is the X85K good for PS5 and Xbox Series X?
Yes, its core gaming specifications suit compatible current-generation consoles. Sony specifies a native 120Hz panel and support for 4K/120, variable refresh rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) over HDMI 2.1. Sony identifies HDMI 3 and HDMI 4 as the inputs for VRR and ALLM. RTINGS reports low input lag, quick response, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, HDMI Forum VRR, and G-SYNC support; it reports no FreeSync support.

For a 4K/120 gaming setup, connect the console or PC to an appropriate HDMI 2.1 input and check the device’s output settings. Sony lists four HDMI inputs overall, so plan around the ports needed by your gaming device and other equipment.
Ports, sound, and mounting
- HDMI: Four inputs; Sony specifies VRR and ALLM on HDMI 3 and 4.
- Audio return: eARC/ARC support for a compatible soundbar or receiver.
- HDR formats: HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision.
- Wall mounting: 300 × 300 mm VESA hole pattern. Confirm the mount’s fit and load rating for the television before installation.
A compatible 4K/120 source may also require an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. These are compatibility considerations, not endorsements of any particular accessory.
Should you buy the Sony KD-65X85K?
The X85K is most compelling when gaming features, good SDR performance, and a centrally positioned viewing setup matter more than premium HDR highlights or wide seating angles. It is less compelling if your priorities are strong local-dimming control for HDR or consistent picture quality for viewers spread across a room.
