Its limits matter: the native panel is 50/60 Hz, it does not offer a 4K/120 gaming experience, and its tested brightness and dark-room black levels are modest. It makes the most sense for general viewing—not for buyers prioritizing high-end HDR or cinematic blacks.
What kind of TV is the Sony KD-65X80L?
Sony introduced the UK-listed KD-65X80L in 2023. It is a 65-inch (64.5-inch measured) LCD television with 3840 × 2160 resolution, direct LED backlighting and frame dimming. Its native refresh rate is 50/60 Hz, not 120 Hz. Sony’s UK specifications describe the model; regional versions and tuner details can differ, so check the local Sony page for the exact model code sold where you live.

How good is the picture?
In its 28 February 2025 review of a 65-inch KD-65X80L, COMPUTER BILD gave the TV a 2.1 (“good”) grade. Reviewer Christoph de Leuw described it as among Sony’s least expensive televisions, a relative statement about Sony’s range rather than proof of a low current selling price. The review praised even illumination, natural-looking colors and color stability when viewed off-center.

The measured results show where the picture has limits. COMPUTER BILD recorded a maximum brightness of 367 cd/m², 90.9% DCI-P3 color coverage and 4,113:1 contrast. These are measurements from that publication’s test sample, not guarantees for every unit. Sony’s support for Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG means the TV can accept those HDR formats; it does not make the set a high-brightness HDR display.

For a bright room
The measured peak brightness is modest, so strong daylight and reflections can make the picture less compelling than on a brighter television. The review found even illumination, but that should not be confused with high brightness. If the TV will face large windows or be used mostly in a sunlit room, compare brightness and screen-reflection performance with alternatives before choosing.
For a dark room
COMPUTER BILD observed that dark scenes looked gray rather than deep black in a dark room. The measured contrast was 4,113:1, but the reviewer’s observation is the practical warning: movie viewers who watch with the lights off and value inky blacks may prefer a TV with stronger dark-scene performance. By contrast, the X80L’s stable colors from wider angles can help when several seats are spread across a room.

Is the Sony X80L good for PS5 or other gaming?
It is suitable for casual or 60 Hz gaming, but it is not a 4K/120 gaming TV. Sony specifies ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) on HDMI inputs 3 and 4; ALLM can let a compatible console or device request a lower-latency mode, but it does not raise the panel’s refresh rate. COMPUTER BILD reported a 60 Hz ceiling and measured 13 ms input lag at 60 Hz in Game mode. Sony’s UK specification does not identify VRR support.
For a PS5, Xbox Series X or gaming PC, the key trade-off is straightforward: games can be enjoyed at up to 4K/60 Hz, but the set cannot display 120 frames per second at 4K, and the cited specifications do not establish VRR. If those features are central to your purchase, choose a model whose manufacturer explicitly lists 4K/120 Hz and VRR.

What smart features and connections does it have?
The UK model runs Google TV and includes Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. Sony lists four HDMI inputs, two USB ports, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and eARC/ARC. App availability and some tuner or connection details can vary by country. Sony identifies eARC/ARC as a supported connection; it is useful for connecting a compatible soundbar, though exact audio formats and setup depend on both devices.

COMPUTER BILD found the sound reasonably balanced but restrained in bass. That may be adequate for everyday programs, but action films, music and games can benefit from a separate soundbar if you want more low-frequency impact. A soundbar is optional, not required to use the TV’s smart features.

Will it fit your wall or TV stand?
For the UK model, Sony lists dimensions of about 145.2 × 83.6 × 7.2 cm without the stand, a weight of 21.7 kg without the stand and a 300 × 300 mm VESA mounting pattern. Measure the furniture or wall location, allow for cables and ventilation, and select a mount rated for the television’s actual weight. Confirm the wall material and use suitable fixings; a VESA match alone does not establish that a mount or wall installation is safe.
Should you buy the KD-65X80L?
Consider it if you want a large 4K Google TV for streaming, broadcast TV and everyday use, and value natural colors and off-axis viewing. Look elsewhere if you need 4K/120 Hz or VRR, bright and impactful HDR, or very deep blacks for dark-room movies. No current local price, stock or warranty was established here, so whether it is good value depends on the offer in your market; compare its price and return terms with similarly sized televisions before buying.
Firmware is also region-specific and can change. Sony UK’s support page lists update v6.8224, released 29 July 2026; check the Sony UK support page or the equivalent page for your country for the current version.
