Sony is not shutting down PlayStation Network. It is retiring selected game servers, user-generated-content (UGC) systems and companion services during 2026. As of August 18, 2026, the affected Sony-controlled services include Tearaway Unfolded’s Tearaway.me features, inFAMOUS 2’s UGC tools, Destruction AllStars’ remaining server support and LittleBigPlanet 3’s indefinitely offline PS4 servers.

What each shutdown removes
inFAMOUS 2
After August 31, players will no longer be able to access, browse, upload, download or play UGC missions through the online service. Sony does not say that the main story becomes unavailable; its offline campaign remains playable. The notice does not establish whether particular online trophies become unobtainable, so trophy consequences should be checked against title-specific documentation rather than assumed.
Destruction AllStars
Sony removed the game and Destruction Points from the PlayStation Store on May 26, 2026, at 14:00 UTC. Multiplayer had already been taken offline because of ongoing technical issues. Existing owners can use the remaining supported single-player modes until November 25 at 15:00 UTC. Unused Destruction Points can be redeemed only within the available modes before that deadline; they should not be treated as retaining value afterward. The announcement does not say that every part of the game becomes completely unplayable at the deadline.

LittleBigPlanet 3
This is an indefinite closure rather than a newly announced future date. The PS4 servers went offline after technical problems in January 2024, removing access to the official online features and other players’ creations. The locally playable game is a separate matter.
Tearaway Unfolded
The Tearaway.me companion service was permanently removed on August 13, 2026. Players lose connected functions such as uploading in-game photos and unlocking or downloading papercrafts through that service. Media Molecule has directed players to its website for papercraft resources; this is a companion-service closure, not a statement that the entire game is disabled.

Other PlayStation games losing online services
Many PlayStation servers are operated by the game publisher, not Sony. A summer 2026 schedule from PS Gaming lists the following examples; these are publisher closures, not a single Sony shutdown announcement:

Because dates and affected modes can change, consult the relevant publisher notice before relying on any third-party schedule.

Server shutdown, outage, delisting or an unplayable game?
These terms describe different events:
- Temporary PSN outage: Sony’s account, gaming, social and store infrastructure has a service interruption. Check the PlayStation status page.
- Game-specific shutdown: One title’s multiplayer, UGC or authentication servers are retired while PSN continues operating.
- Companion-site closure: A website or connected feature disappears, as with Tearaway.me, while the installed game may still work offline.
- Store delisting: New purchases stop. Existing owners may retain the license and downloads, subject to the platform’s rules.
- Entirely unplayable game: An online-only title, or a game requiring unavailable authentication, may cease functioning. That conclusion must be confirmed for the specific title.
A server closure does not automatically delete a game from a library, revoke a purchase or erase locally stored saves. It can, however, remove multiplayer, cloud-linked progression, UGC, online trophies or required authentication. Sony’s notices do not provide a blanket refund promise; statutory rights remain subject to applicable law and the circumstances of the purchase.
What players should do before a deadline
- Launch the game and identify which modes, saves, UGC and trophies depend on an online connection.
- Export or capture creations, photos and progression where the game allows it. Screenshots and video may be the only practical archive for content that cannot be downloaded.
- Use game-specific virtual currency before the stated cutoff. For Destruction AllStars, that means before November 25, 2026, at 15:00 UTC.
- Download owned add-ons, patches and permitted content while the platform makes them available.
- Check online trophy requirements using title-specific guides; Sony’s general server notice does not classify every trophy.
- Save locally where possible and do not assume that an online backup, creator page or companion website will remain available.
How to diagnose a connection failure
If a game stops connecting early, first check the official PlayStation Service Status, then the game publisher’s support channel. A regional outage, maintenance window, expired companion service, game update or authentication error can look similar to a permanent shutdown. Restarting a console or resetting a router cannot restore a server that has been decommissioned.

Separate issue: PS3 and PS Vita Store closures
Sony has also announced staged PlayStation Store closures for PS3 and PS Vita. Closures begin in August 2026 in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua, with additional Latin American and Middle Eastern markets later in 2026; most other countries are scheduled for July 2027. Sony says previously purchased content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future. This is store availability, not the same event as retiring a game’s online servers. What this means for digital ownership
Owning a digital license generally means retaining the right to use the purchased software under the platform’s terms; it does not guarantee that a company will operate multiplayer, UGC hosting, cloud services or authentication forever. A delisted game can remain playable for existing owners, while an online-only game can lose its practical function when its servers disappear. Offline patches, exports or community replacements may preserve parts of an experience, but they are title-specific and unofficial.

The Bottom Line
Sony is retiring selected PlayStation game services, not PlayStation Network itself. Check the official game-server page and the responsible publisher’s notice for the exact feature, platform, date and time that apply to your game.
