Sony INZONE H9 II vs. INZONE H9: What’s different and which should you buy?

Short answer: Buy the INZONE H9 II if lower weight, a detachable cardioid microphone, USB-C wireless, wired-mode noise canceling or Bluetooth LE Audio matter to you. Choose the original INZONE H9 if it is substantially cheaper or its two-hour longer published maximum battery life is more important than newer connectivity. Sony’s specifications show clear feature and weight differences, but they do not establish an independent sound or ANC winner, and the original H9’s current street price is not established in the available material.

This comparison uses Sony’s published specifications and product information. Battery figures are manufacturer maximums with noise canceling switched off, not independent runtime tests. Prices and availability can change, so check the current listing for your country before ordering.

At a glance: H9 II versus H9

Sony positions the H9 II as the lighter, newer-connectivity successor rather than a completely different class of headset. Both models are wireless gaming headsets with active noise canceling (ANC) and 360 Spatial Sound. The practical changes concern carrying weight, the microphone, the wireless dongle connection, Bluetooth generation and charging speed.

What changed from the original H9?

A much lighter chassis

Sony lists the H9 II at 260 g without its microphone and 273 g with the microphone installed. The original H9 is listed at 330 g in Sony’s lineup chart. That makes the H9 II 57 g lighter in its microphone-equipped configuration and 70 g lighter with the microphone removed. Sony’s support specifications list the original at approximately 11.64 oz in white and 11.82 oz in black, while the H9 II support listing gives approximately 9.17 oz without the microphone.

Those are specifications, not a guarantee that every person will experience the same comfort. The difference is large enough to matter during long sessions, travel or work calls, because less mass generally means less load for the top of your head and neck. If you often play for several hours, the H9 II’s weight is its most immediately practical upgrade. If you mainly play short sessions at a desk, the saving may not justify paying more.

A detachable microphone with a different pickup pattern

The H9 II uses a detachable cardioid, or unidirectional, boom microphone. Sony lists AI noise reduction, a physical mute button and an indicator LED in its comparison information. You can remove the boom when you want a cleaner headphone profile or when using the headset only for listening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original H9 uses a bidirectional microphone that mutes when you flip it up. Bidirectional and cardioid designs reject sound from different directions, but Sony’s published material does not establish which microphone sounds better in a real chat, stream or meeting. Treat the pattern and controls as workflow differences rather than a proven quality ranking.

USB-C replaces USB-A for the wireless transceiver

The H9 II includes a USB-C 2.4 GHz transceiver. The original H9 includes a USB-A wireless transceiver. For a laptop, tablet, phone or handheld with only USB-C ports, H9 II avoids relying on a USB-A adapter. A desktop with several USB-A ports may not gain much from the newer connector.

USB-C shape alone does not guarantee compatibility. Sony says the host device must support USB Type-C for the supplied transceiver, but also cautions that not every USB-C connection is guaranteed to work and that functions can vary with the device or software. Before buying for a console, phone or handheld, check Sony’s compatibility guidance and the host manufacturer’s port specifications.

Bluetooth 5.3 and LE Audio on H9 II

Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3 and LE Audio with the LC3 codec for the H9 II. The original H9 is listed with Bluetooth 5.0 and Classic Bluetooth. LE Audio can be useful with a compatible phone or computer, but the headset cannot create support that the source device or operating system lacks. Bluetooth feature availability depends on the profiles and codecs supported at both ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2.4 GHz dongle remains the connection to consider for latency-sensitive gaming. Bluetooth is convenient for phones and general audio, while a cable can be useful when you need a direct analog connection or want to preserve wireless battery. Sony’s pages do not provide a universal statement that every device can use Bluetooth and the dongle simultaneously, so do not buy on the assumption that dual-link behavior will work in your particular setup.

Noise canceling, spatial audio and wired use

Both models have ANC and 360 Spatial Sound

Noise canceling and 360 Spatial Sound appear for both headsets in Sony’s product and comparison information. The H9 II is not the only model with ANC; the original H9 also lists it. Sony does not publish an independent measurement showing that one has stronger attenuation, better imaging or a wider soundstage, so a definitive “winner” claim would go beyond the available evidence.

  • WIRED AND WIRELESS: Choose between 2.4Ghz wireless connection through USB Transceiver, or 3.5mm wired option.

H9 II’s explicit wired-ANC capability

On the H9 II product page, Sony states: “Active Noise canceling works in both wireless and wired modes.” That matters if you want to connect the headset to an airplane entertainment system, controller or computer headphone jack while retaining ANC. The supplied H9 documentation lists noise canceling and wired connectivity, but does not provide the same explicit sentence confirming ANC in wired mode. If cabled ANC is a requirement, the H9 II has the clearer documented case.

Remember that ANC performance depends on fit, the noise spectrum and the source of the sound. Neither Sony’s pages nor this comparison provide laboratory isolation figures, so use the feature presence—not an unverified performance ranking—as the basis for your decision.

Battery life and charging: a trade-off, not a clean upgrade

Published maximum runtime

Sony rates the H9 II for a maximum of 30 hours with noise canceling turned off. The original H9 is rated for a maximum of 32 hours with noise canceling turned off. On the stated maximum, the older headset lasts two hours longer.

These numbers are not independent measurements and are not promises of 30 or 32 hours in every mode. Turning ANC on, using the 2.4 GHz radio, listening at higher volume, making voice calls and using other processing can reduce actual runtime. Sony’s pages provide the maximum condition—ANC off—but do not establish a directly comparable real-world endurance figure for both models.

Quick-charge advantage

The H9 II specification says five minutes of charging provides one hour of play. The H9 specification says ten minutes provides one hour. If you regularly discover an empty battery just before a session, H9 II’s stated recovery rate is twice as fast. The original H9’s longer maximum may still be preferable if you spend long periods away from a charger and rarely need emergency top-ups.

How to use the battery figures in a buying decision

  • Choose H9 II for frequent short charging opportunities, travel days with USB-C chargers or situations where a five-minute top-up is valuable.
  • Choose H9 for the longer published maximum when your priority is the greatest claimed time between charges and the older headset is meaningfully cheaper.
  • Do not treat either figure as a tested guarantee with ANC, microphone use and 2.4 GHz gaming active; those conditions are not covered by the maximum claim.

Connection and device compatibility

H9 II: USB-C 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and cable

The H9 II package includes a USB-C 2.4 GHz transceiver and a headphone cable. This gives you a low-latency radio path, Bluetooth options and wired fallback. Sony also lists a USB-A-to-USB-C cable in the box, which can help connect or charge the headset from a USB-A port, but the radio transceiver itself is USB-C.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

H9: USB-A 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth Classic

The original H9 package includes a USB transceiver and USB cable. Its transceiver is USB-A, and Sony lists Bluetooth 5.0 Classic. It remains a straightforward fit for PCs, consoles or docks that expose USB-A, but devices with only USB-C may require an adapter or hub.

Check the host before you order

  1. Identify the port you will use for the wireless transceiver: USB-C for H9 II or USB-A for H9.
  2. For H9 II, verify that the USB-C port supports the required accessory functions; Sony warns that not all USB-C connections are guaranteed and that software can affect available functions.
  3. If you plan to use Bluetooth, confirm that your phone, computer or console supports the profiles and codecs needed for the features you want, including LE Audio/LC3.
  4. Keep a wired path available when a host does not support the dongle or when wireless restrictions apply.

Sony’s compatibility article is the appropriate reference for supported smartphones and game consoles; compatibility can differ by platform and software version.

Microphone and controls: which design fits your routine?

Pick H9 II for a removable boom and directional pickup

A detachable cardioid boom is useful when you alternate between gaming chat and ordinary headphone listening. Removing it avoids leaving a fixed arm in front of your face. The mute button and LED provide a dedicated control and visual state indicator according to Sony’s comparison chart. AI noise reduction is part of Sony’s listed microphone feature set, but no independent test in the available material measures how much it improves transmitted speech.

  • AI-Optimized Voice Communication: Detachable cardioid boom mic with AI noise reduction and Super Wide Band technology ensures crystal-clear team comms and reduced background noise.
  • Customizable Sound Profiles: Fnatic EQ presets tuned for Valorant and Apex Legends plus full EQ control via INZONE Hub for PC and Sound Connect app for PlayStation 5.

  • Dual Connectivity & Long Battery Life: Low-latency 2.4GHz USB-C dongle, Bluetooth and LE Audio pairing, wired support, and up to 30 hours of playtime per charge.

Pick H9 for flip-up muting

The H9’s bidirectional microphone mutes when flipped up. That can be faster than finding a button during a call, and the boom remains attached so it cannot be misplaced. The trade-off is less flexibility if you want to remove the microphone entirely or prefer a directional cardioid design.

Neither model can be declared the better-sounding microphone from Sony’s specifications alone. Consider whether your priority is removable hardware and a button (H9 II) or a simple flip-up gesture (H9).

What comes in the box

Sony’s US support listings identify these accessories. Contents can vary by market, color or regional package, so verify the box for your country.

Model Sony-listed contents
INZONE H9 II Headphone cable, USB-A-to-USB-C cable, USB-C transceiver, soft pouch, reference guide and warranty card.
INZONE H9 USB cable, USB transceiver and reference guide.

The H9 II’s listed soft pouch and detachable microphone support a more travel-oriented setup. The original H9’s shorter accessory list is not evidence of poorer audio performance; it simply gives you fewer documented extras in the package.

Price, availability and value

Sony’s US product page displayed $349.99 for the white H9 II when accessed in 2026. That is a time-sensitive listing price, not a guaranteed current price or a statement about other countries. The available Sony material does not establish a comparable current price or marketplace availability for the original H9.

Because the H9’s price is not established here, use a relative rule rather than a fixed dollar threshold:

  • If the H9 II is close in price to the original H9, its lower weight, USB-C transceiver, detachable cardioid microphone, wired ANC statement and LE Audio make it the more complete purchase.
  • If the original H9 is materially discounted, its 32-hour maximum claim and still-present ANC, 360 Spatial Sound and 2.4 GHz wireless may offer better value for a USB-A-equipped setup.
  • If you need USB-C but the H9 II costs substantially more, include the cost and inconvenience of a reliable adapter or hub when comparing the H9.

Check the current Sony listing for the exact color and model variant before paying. Sony notes that specifications and features can change without prior notice.

Which headset should you buy?

Buy the INZONE H9 II when these priorities lead

  • Long-session comfort: You want the lighter 260 g headset without the microphone or 273 g with it, instead of the original H9’s 330 g listing.
  • USB-C equipment: Your main gaming device has USB-C and you want the supplied 2.4 GHz transceiver without depending on a USB-A adapter.
  • Flexible microphone use: You want a detachable cardioid boom, AI noise reduction and a mute button with LED.
  • Wired ANC: You specifically need Sony’s documented ANC operation in both wired and wireless modes.
  • Newer Bluetooth: Your source devices support Bluetooth 5.3 and LE Audio/LC3 and you want those options.
  • Fast top-ups: Five minutes for one hour of claimed play is more useful to you than the older model’s two-hour advantage in maximum runtime.

Buy the original INZONE H9 when these priorities lead

  • Lower purchase price: The H9 is materially cheaper in your local market and you can accept its older USB-A and Bluetooth arrangement.
  • Maximum stated endurance: Two additional hours in Sony’s ANC-off maximum claim matters more than quick-charge speed.
  • USB-A setup: Your computer, console dock or hub already has a convenient USB-A port.
  • Flip-up muting: You prefer an attached boom that mutes when raised rather than a detachable microphone and button.

When neither specification decides the purchase

If both models fit your ports and cost about the same, the H9 II’s weight reduction is the strongest everyday differentiator. If comfort is not a concern and the H9 is heavily discounted, the original still covers the core requirements—ANC, 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth and 360 Spatial Sound—without giving up those headline features. In either case, do not choose based on an assumed sound or ANC champion; Sony’s published pages do not provide independent side-by-side results.

Bottom line

The INZONE H9 II is the better forward-looking choice for most buyers who value comfort, USB-C, a removable directional microphone, faster charging or documented ANC in wired mode. The original INZONE H9 remains sensible when its price is substantially lower, your equipment is USB-A based and the two-hour longer published maximum battery claim matters. Recheck your local price, model variant and host-device compatibility before ordering, because those factors determine whether the H9 II’s newer features justify its premium.
