Static from Sony wireless headphones is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It may be Bluetooth interference, a sound from noise canceling or ambient-sound features, wind or movement, or a model-specific fault. First identify when it happens, then test the connection and sound-control settings before resetting anything.
What kind of “static” are you hearing?
Different sounds point to different causes. Note whether you hear a steady hiss, crackling or popping, brief dropouts, or noise tied to walking, wind, inserting an earbud, or touching the headphones. Also check whether it happens only during calls, in one app, with one playback device, or in one location. Sony’s troubleshooting guides distinguish these patterns rather than treating every noise as the same fault.

- Steady, quiet hiss: Compare with noise canceling turned off; some models can produce light white noise when that feature is active.
- Crackling, popping, or interruptions: Check the Bluetooth environment and playback setup.
- Noise during movement, wind, insertion, or touch: It may relate to microphones or model-specific behavior, though persistent or unusual noise still warrants troubleshooting.
Sony’s guidance for unwanted noise on WF-1000XM5 and noise on WF-1000XM4 is model-specific. Don’t assume that an explanation for one model applies to every Sony headphone.
Could Bluetooth interference be causing it?
If the sound is worse in a crowded place and improves somewhere quieter, Bluetooth interference is plausible. Sony’s guidance says that when the issue does not occur at home or in a place with fewer nearby devices, Bluetooth communication interference may be the cause rather than the headphones themselves. Treat that as a useful diagnostic clue, not proof that a persistent noise is harmless.

- Move closer to the phone, computer, or other playback device.
- Try again in a quieter location with fewer nearby wireless devices.
- Temporarily turn off nearby Bluetooth devices you are not using and close apps that are not needed.
- If your model supports it, open Sony | Sound Connect and select the connection-quality option Prioritize Stable Connection.
Sony notes that available settings and the best playback-quality choice can depend on the headphone model, connected device, and codec. Check the instructions for your specific model rather than assuming one quality setting is best for every setup. Does the noise change when you turn off noise canceling?
For a continuous, faint hiss, switch noise canceling off briefly and compare. If the hiss disappears or changes, the feature may be involved. This comparison helps narrow the cause; it does not establish that every hiss is normal or that all Sony models behave alike.

If noise occurs while walking or running, compare with noise canceling and ambient sound control off. Wind can reach ambient-sound microphones, and movement or contact can produce sounds on some earbuds. Sony describes such behavior for particular models, including the WF-1000XM5. On the noise-canceling guidance page, Sony also notes that fit and environment can affect the perceived effect; its microphone-mesh note is specific to WH-1000XM6.
What should you update or reset?
Update the headphone software if an update is available for your model, then retest the same situation. If the sound remains, follow the reset instructions for the exact model. Sony’s general Bluetooth-noise troubleshooting describes resetting, initializing, and pairing again as later steps, but button combinations vary by product.

- Find the exact model number on the headphones, packaging, or its connected-device information.
- Open that model’s Sony support page or manual and follow its software-update instructions.
- If needed, use only that model’s documented reset procedure.
- Use initialization only when appropriate for your model and follow the instructions to pair the headphones again.
Initialization restores factory settings and deletes Bluetooth pairing information, so you will need to pair the headphones again. Do not copy a button sequence from another Sony product. When should you contact Sony support?
Contact Sony Product Support if crackling, buzzing, popping, vibration, or other unwanted noise persists after the appropriate troubleshooting. Sony’s model-specific guidance may recommend service if resetting and initialization do not resolve the issue. Provide the model number and describe the sound, when it occurs, whether location or sound-control settings affect it, and which steps you tried.
