Choose the Sony ECM-W5 if your main camera is a compatible Sony model and you value Multi Interface Shoe integration, a manufacturer-rated range of up to 500 metres in ideal conditions, 96 kHz recording and a 3.5 mm lavalier input. Choose the DJI Mic 2 if you move between cameras and phones, record in noisy places or need a documented internal-recording and Bluetooth workflow. DJI’s intelligent noise cancelling is more effective than Sony’s single-level reduction in an independent TechRadar listening review, while Sony delivers clean, clear sound and a longer stated line-of-sight range.
There is no universal winner. The ECM-W5 is the more camera-integrated choice for Sony owners; Mic 2 is the more flexible choice for mixed-device production. The figures below keep manufacturer specifications separate from independent reviewer impressions, because neither product has a universally accepted laboratory winner.

| Recording in transmitter | TechRadar reports 62.5 GB usable storage per transmitter; Sony’s cited specifications do not state a storage capacity | Internal recording; DJI’s comparison page lists 14 hours |
| Sample-rate specifications | 20 Hz–20 kHz at 48 kHz; 20 Hz–40 kHz at 96 kHz | Optional 96 kHz/24-bit mode is reported by TechRadar; the supplied DJI product information does not give a full frequency-response figure |
| Battery figures | Approximately 7 hours for the receiver and 11 hours for each microphone, from Sony’s help guide | Up to 18 hours with the charging case; the figure is a system claim, not a single-transmitter runtime |
| Camera connection | Multi Interface Shoe and digital camera integration on compatible Sony cameras | Digital connection to Sony cameras without a 3.5 mm TRS cable, plus conventional camera connections |
| Phone connection | No direct phone connection is specified in the cited Sony material | Direct Bluetooth connection to compatible devices |
| Lavalier expansion | 3.5 mm external-microphone input; Sony lists the ECM-L1 as an example | DJI lists the DJI Lavalier Mic as a compatible accessory |
| Transmitter and receiver weight | 27.1 g transmitter; 35 g receiver | Not stated in the supplied DJI material |
| Total kit price | Not stated; regional price and package contents must be checked at purchase | Not stated; regional price and package contents must be checked at purchase |
The table contains unlike measurements in a few places. Sony publishes separate microphone and receiver runtimes, whereas DJI’s headline number includes the charging case. A longer advertised range is not proof of better performance in a crowded room, and storage capacity is not the same as battery life.

Which microphone should you buy?
Pick the Sony ECM-W5 when the camera is the priority
- You already use a compatible Sony camera and want the receiver to mount and communicate through the Multi Interface Shoe.
- You regularly place the subject far from the camera in an open environment and can work within Sony’s stated, condition-dependent 500 m maximum.
- You want a documented 96 kHz mode and the option to connect a 3.5 mm lavalier directly to a transmitter.
- You prefer clean, relatively unprocessed speech and do not need aggressive automatic suppression of surrounding sound.
Pick the DJI Mic 2 when flexibility and noise control matter most
- You alternate between mirrorless cameras, phones and other compatible devices.
- You record near traffic, air-conditioning, crowds or other steady background noise and want an intelligent noise-cancelling mode.
- You need a self-contained backup recording in the transmitter rather than relying only on the camera’s track.
- You want to pair directly with a compatible phone over Bluetooth for quick mobile shoots.
Camera integration and daily workflow
Sony ECM-W5 with a Sony camera
The ECM-W5’s strongest advantage is the Multi Interface Shoe. On a compatible Sony camera, the receiver sits in the shoe and uses the camera’s digital connection rather than requiring a separate audio lead. That reduces cable clutter and makes a Sony-centered rig faster to assemble. Sony describes the system as using Bluetooth hopping for stable, long-range transmission.
Compatibility still matters. Multi Interface Shoe features differ between camera generations, so confirm that your particular body supports the ECM-W5’s digital microphone functions. A physical shoe that accepts accessories is not, by itself, a guarantee that every digital feature is available.
DJI Mic 2 with cameras
DJI documents a digital connection to Sony cameras without a 3.5 mm TRS cable. This gives Sony owners a cable-free alternative, although the ECM-W5 remains the more native accessory in a Sony-only kit. For other cameras, use the connection method supported by that camera and the Mic 2 receiver; the supplied product information does not establish one universal digital interface for every camera brand.
DJI Mic 2 with phones
Mic 2 can connect directly over Bluetooth to compatible devices. That is useful for a phone-only interview, a quick social video or a second camera angle where carrying the receiver is inconvenient. Bluetooth compatibility is device-dependent, so check that the phone or tablet recognizes the Mic 2 before a paid or time-critical shoot.

Wireless range: what “500 metres” really means
Sony’s 2026 help guide says, “Working range Up to 500 m (1 600 ft.).” The same guide calls the figure approximate and warns that orientation, reflective surfaces, obstacles and radio conditions change the result. Treat 500 m as a controlled-condition ceiling, not a guaranteed distance in a building, a city street or a venue full of people.
For a practical test, keep the transmitter and receiver facing one another, begin at a short distance, then increase separation while monitoring the camera. Walls, metal structures, vehicles and the human body can block or reflect radio energy. Turning a transmitter or placing it under clothing can reduce the usable margin well before the headline distance.
The supplied DJI specifications do not state a directly comparable range figure. That does not prove that Mic 2 has short range; it means a numerical, apples-to-apples comparison is not established here. If range is the deciding factor, evaluate both systems at the location and with the camera position you will actually use.

Noise reduction and speech quality
DJI lists intelligent noise cancelling as a core Mic 2 feature. Sony provides a single-level noise-reduction mode. In TechRadar’s independent review, the ECM-W5’s reduction was described as gentler and less effective than DJI’s, while the Sony recording itself was described as clean and clear. The review also noted that Sony’s processing did not introduce odd artifacts. This is a listening assessment, not a controlled laboratory measurement, so treat it as practical guidance rather than a universal score.

When DJI’s stronger suppression helps
Use Mic 2’s noise cancelling when the unwanted sound is fairly continuous: road noise, a fan, an air conditioner or a busy public space. Strong processing can make speech easier to understand, but listen for clipped consonants or an unnatural texture. Record a short sample with the setting on and off before starting the full interview.
When Sony’s gentler approach helps
The ECM-W5 is attractive when you want the voice to retain a natural ambience and plan to make detailed adjustments in post-production. Its clean, clear character can be preferable in a quiet room or a controlled set where aggressive suppression is unnecessary. Good microphone placement still matters more than any automatic mode: keep the capsule close to the speaker, avoid rubbing fabric over it and position the subject away from the loudest source.
Audio specifications and recording formats
Sony’s published response and headroom
Sony specifies 20 Hz–20 kHz at a 48 kHz sampling rate and 20 Hz–40 kHz at 96 kHz. The transmitter uses an omnidirectional monaural capsule. Sony also lists intrinsic noise of 21 dB SPL or less and a maximum input sound pressure level of 124 dB SPL. The latter figure indicates substantial tolerance for loud sources, but it does not eliminate the need to set a sensible recording level when a speaker is close to the microphone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe 96 kHz specification extends the documented frequency response; it does not automatically make dialogue sound better. It creates larger files and may increase processing requirements. Use it when your camera and post-production pipeline support it and you have a reason, such as a high-resolution production workflow. For ordinary spoken-word video, 48 kHz remains the simpler, widely used choice.

DJI’s recording options
DJI documents internal recording in Mic 2, and its comparison page lists 14 hours of internal recording. TechRadar separately reports an optional 96 kHz/24-bit mode. Because that mode is a reviewer-reported detail in the supplied material, verify the current firmware and menu wording before relying on it for a specific production.
Internal recording is valuable when radio transmission is interrupted or a camera track is accidentally muted. It is not a substitute for checking that the transmitter is actually recording. Start a short test, confirm the recording indicator and keep the transmitter’s files with the camera footage during offload.
Battery life and charging expectations
Sony figures
Sony’s help guide gives approximately 7 hours of receiver operation and approximately 11 hours of microphone operation. These are separate figures: the receiver and each transmitter do not necessarily run for the same duration. Temperature, radio conditions, monitoring and operating settings can reduce real-world time, so begin a long shoot with every component fully charged.

DJI advertises up to 18 hours when Mic 2 is used with its charging case. DJI’s wording is a system-level claim that includes recharges from the case, not 18 continuous hours from one transmitter and receiver. The comparison page’s 14-hour internal-recording figure is another measurement and should not be substituted for the case claim.

Do not compare 18 hours directly with Sony’s 7- and 11-hour figures without accounting for the case and the different measurement definitions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Lavalier microphones and clothing-friendly placement
Both systems support an external lavalier. Sony provides a 3.5 mm external-microphone input and names the separately sold ECM-L1 as an example. DJI lists the DJI Lavalier Mic among compatible accessories. A lavalier can produce more consistent speech than a transmitter clipped to a loose shirt, especially when the subject turns their head.
Using a lavalier with the ECM-W5
- Connect the lavalier’s 3.5 mm plug to the transmitter before recording.
- Clip the capsule near the upper chest, keeping fabric from brushing the microphone.
- Secure the cable so a turn of the head does not pull on the connector.
- Record a short sample while the subject speaks at the loudest expected level.
Using a lavalier with Mic 2
- Connect the compatible DJI lavalier to the transmitter.
- Place and secure the capsule as you would with any wired lavalier.
- Check both the camera feed and the transmitter’s internal recording if you are using the backup track.
The accessory names do not establish that the two lavaliers are interchangeable. Use the microphone and connector specified for the relevant transmitter.
Size, weight and wearing comfort
Sony publishes a 27.1 g transmitter weight and a 35 g receiver weight. Those figures make the ECM-W5 easy to account for when balancing a small camera rig or clipping the transmitter to light clothing. Sony’s cited specifications do not provide the transmitter’s physical dimensions in the supplied material, so a dimensional comparison would be speculative.
The supplied DJI information does not state transmitter or receiver weight. Do not infer that one system is lighter from photographs or from the charging-case design. If the microphone will be worn for several hours, check the complete package weight, clip strength and cable routing in person or against the current product specification.
Cost and what you are actually paying for
No current regional prices or complete package-price comparison is established in the available product information. Prices, taxes, promotions and included accessories vary by country and date, so check the seller’s listing at the time of purchase rather than treating a historical number as current.
Value comes from different features in each kit:
- The ECM-W5’s premium is tied to Sony camera integration, the stated long-range capability, high-resolution modes and the 3.5 mm lavalier input.
- Mic 2’s value is tied to intelligent noise cancelling, internal recording, Bluetooth phone use and a case that extends total operating time.
- A lavalier, additional transmitters or a replacement case can change the final cost more than the base receiver comparison suggests. Confirm exactly what the regional kit contains.
Setup procedures
Sony ECM-W5 on a compatible Sony camera
- Charge the receiver and transmitter, then inspect the clips, capsule openings and connectors for debris.
- Slide the receiver fully into the camera’s Multi Interface Shoe so it is seated securely.
- Turn on the camera, receiver and transmitter and confirm that the camera recognizes the digital microphone connection.
- Choose the camera’s audio input and level controls for the connected microphone; make a short recording and listen through headphones.
- If you are using a lavalier, connect it to the transmitter, place it on the subject and repeat the test for clothing noise and speech level.
- For a distant subject, begin with a clear line of sight and keep the receiver’s antenna area unobstructed by your hand or another accessory.
DJI Mic 2 for a camera
- Charge the case, receiver and transmitters before pairing.
- Pair the transmitters with the receiver according to the current Mic 2 controls and confirm that each channel responds.
- For a compatible Sony camera, use the documented digital connection that does not require a 3.5 mm TRS cable. For another camera, use the connection supported by that camera and the Mic 2 kit.
- Record a test while monitoring the camera input. Then make a second test with intelligent noise cancelling enabled if the location is noisy.
- Start internal recording on the transmitter when you want a backup track, and verify the recording indicator before the subject begins.
DJI Mic 2 for a phone
- Confirm that the phone is a compatible Bluetooth device and disable other audio accessories that might take priority.
- Enable Bluetooth on the phone, select the Mic 2 when it appears and grant the recording app permission to use the microphone.
- Make a short video and play it back through headphones; a successful Bluetooth pairing does not guarantee that every app has selected the external microphone.
- Keep the transmitter’s internal recording running for an important take so a phone-app routing error does not discard the only audio.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The signal cuts out at a distance
- Move the receiver and transmitter into a clearer line of sight.
- Remove the receiver from behind a metal object, monitor or other radio-obstructing accessory.
- Change the orientation of the units; Sony specifically identifies orientation, reflective surfaces, obstacles and radio conditions as range variables.
- Reduce the distance and confirm whether the problem follows the location or the equipment.
The voice sounds noisy
- Move the capsule closer to the speaker instead of raising gain from far away.
- Check for clothing rub, cable movement and wind across the capsule.
- On Mic 2, compare intelligent noise cancelling on and off in a short sample.
- On the ECM-W5, use the cleaner location and closer placement to compensate for its gentler reduction.
The camera records no microphone audio
- Confirm that the receiver is powered and paired, then inspect the camera’s selected audio input.
- On a Sony camera, reseat the ECM-W5 in the Multi Interface Shoe and verify that the body supports the required digital accessory functions.
- With Mic 2, verify that the phone or camera has selected Mic 2 rather than its built-in microphone.
- Play back the transmitter’s internal file, if available, to distinguish a radio or camera-routing problem from a microphone problem.
The phone will not use Mic 2
- Check that the phone is a compatible Bluetooth device and that another headset is not occupying the audio route.
- Forget the pairing, restart Bluetooth and pair again before opening the recording app.
- Test with a second compatible recording app; some apps do not expose every external-input option.
Decision guide for common shoots
| Shooting situation | More suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Sony mirrorless camera, quiet interview room | Sony ECM-W5 | Native Multi Interface Shoe workflow and clean, clear sound with minimal setup |
| Sony camera on a windy or mechanically noisy location | DJI Mic 2 | Documented intelligent noise cancelling and internal recording provide more flexibility |
| Phone-first social video | DJI Mic 2 | Direct Bluetooth connection to compatible devices |
| Long-distance open-air presentation | Sony ECM-W5, subject to a site test | Sony states up to 500 m under approximate, condition-dependent conditions |
| Production requiring a transmitter backup file | DJI Mic 2, or Sony only after confirming the reviewed storage feature | DJI documents internal recording and 14 hours on its comparison page; Sony’s 62.5 GB figure is reported by TechRadar |
| Hidden lavalier under clothing | Either, with the appropriate accessory | Both ecosystems support a compatible external lavalier |
Bottom line
The Sony ECM-W5 is the better specialist tool for a Sony-camera-centered kit. Its Multi Interface Shoe integration, 96 kHz specification, 3.5 mm lavalier input and claimed 500 m approximate range address the needs of creators who work primarily with compatible Sony cameras. The DJI Mic 2 is the better general-purpose system for mixed cameras and phones, noisy environments and shoots where internal recording is essential. DJI’s intelligent noise cancelling has the stronger independent listening result, while Sony’s gentler processing preserves a clean, clear character. Choose according to the workflow you will use every week, not a single headline specification.
